Toxic Academic Culture at Johns Hopkins University

Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University is a world renowned institution but studying there is not all fun and games. The excessive workload and competitive culture has proven to be a detriment to the students' mental health and well-being, which poses one question: is an elite education really worth it?

It’s worth it in the end knowing that you survived the rigorous trials of surviving at an elite institution. I graduated from UC Berkeley and the students feel the same way. Never bad to seek help or speak to someone if you are dealing with difficulty.

A provocative perspective on academics at Hopkins. There are some quibbles, one being the fact that only first year students were interviewed; rather than including upper level students, who for the most part have passed through the shock phase and upped their game to the unique Hopkins level. Still, the clear message that Hopkins academics are no joke is one that all applicants to that university should be exposed to, especially those who choose to attend Hopkins because they weren't accepted at HarvardPrincetonYale and assume that Hopkins is next up. Those unfortunates are like sheep led to the slaughter. No, Hopkins is in an entirely different category, with U of Chicago, Cal Tech and maybe MIT. Hopkins, like Chicago, is utterly, un-apologetically, serious. Bottom line for me: JHU was paradise.

Hey I applied Early Decision to Hopkins, fully well aware of the academic rigor.

Calm your tits, sir. Unless you are in a super hard major JHU is not that hard. All premed degrees from JHU are meh except maybe Biomedicla Engineering.

From what I heard form parents of a past JHU student, freshman year is the hardest. They give you the least support and most work to make sure you are up to the challenge. After the first year, students get more support and endure less stress. Though this is all from a parent's perspective. JHU is still my first choice school.

@Tianruo Yang Yeah, you're probably right about that. That's my point. Most college applicants should stay away. But for me, it gave me a great life all over the world with the World Health Organization, and my time there was ... paradise.

...the issue they have is the work amount?...ya that's not toxic or cultural. It's just hard work.

Hi, Johns Hopkins Senior here. I'm also a pre-med mol cell major. The notion that Johns Hopkins has a cutthroat academic culture is simply not true. In my experience, people are very collaborative and most people have a good balance between school/extracurriculars/sleep/fun. Yes, Hopkins is challenging and you have to work hard to get good grades but that's true for every top school (except those that inflate grades). I don't think the opinions espoused by the students interviewed in this video are held by the majority of people at Hopkins. TLDR, I've had a great experience at Hopkins so far and have not felt the excessive stress or workload described in the video.

Why weren't Juniors or Seniors interviewed? Surely they would be more representative of the schooling practices. Probably because they didn't have time.

The course load while busy, was manageable. Comparable to junior year in HS with APs, SATs, and SAT IIs exams if you are smart and diligent to get in.

My high school is just like this. I come from a very competitive school where the average SAT score is something like a 1350. All of my friends have a 1550 or higher. It’s basically about who can do the most and keep the highest grades simultaneously. It definitely wasn’t to this extreme, but there is a very toxic environment surrounding academics similar to this.

John's Hopkins experimented on me and my brother as a child and put us in solitary confinement rooms without any furniture in them.

Interesting take on preparing for a world that cares more about destinations than journeys. These 18 year old freshmen lack the perspective of their 30 year old selves. This experience is an investment in the future. And yes, I am a JHU graduate.

Ugh...so what exactly did they expect from a school that has a rigorous focus on academic performance? The typical students who apply to JHU are the kind who want a high caliber education. What were they hoping for?

Just go to a less extreme school. Who goes to JHU or any other prestigious university and cries about the schedule?

Boohoo JH is an elite school. The difficulties of which you complain are called, "standards."

Don't be fooled. I attended a state institution for undergrad and am currently in a private school for grad, and the work loads at both can be quite arduous. I'd rather focus on the research opportunities available for students, the generousness of financial aid and scholarship packages, and being in a geographic location that I will enjoy that has lots of choices for work and volunteerism, regardless of the tuition's name.
@LAisamazzzzzing

You say that and then "regardless of the tuition's name" when elite private schools offer exactly what you said people should look for...LOL hopkins is one the best research institutions in the world so im not sure how your comment is relevant here.
