And what's funny is that dsp now doesn't like that game company give free games to youtubers and earlier. But it was ok when he got fallout 4 earlier than everyone else remember it's ok whenever dsp does a thing he complains that others do
@@jkdman2007 the dude probably forgot how to communicate with other human beings. And anyone can see that in his interview with Creg and Adam. (My favourite part was when DSP tried to explain why he doesn't trust Keem because he watched Videos from Keem's detractors and Adam told him "this is rich coming from you, when for 3 past hours of this interview you keep telling us the shit your detractors did to you because of their lies. Do you hear yourself" and DSP replied with "Yes I do"
@@jkdman2007 of course he'll never learn from his mistakes. What he does with Baldur's Gate 3 now he also did it back with his edited videos after his Homefront video became viral most of us will probably keep making more videos like this and take advantage of this and even improve our newer videos but not DSP. DSP stopped and spended all that money for a hotel to watch WWE. What do we expect from a dude that spended over 5K for a candy crush clone with wrestlers only to just feel good about himself that he's in the top of the leaderboard. And that's why I stopped playing WWE games 2K literally blocks alt attires and Characters behind a paywall of microtransactions and it's a scummy thing to do especially when you do that in a 150€ game with all the DLC.
I really appreciate comments that point out the quick little jokes i throw in. they make the whole process a blast to make and im glad some of you enhoy them as much as i do
He HAS shilled before, look up his bean bag review, and his stream of AC...Odyssey? I think, where he didn't give the game ANY shit unlike the streams immediately before and after. The guy's only against shilling because no one is willing to work with him anymore. If he could do it, he would.
"You have to be PC about it" - the word that escapes him is professionalism. You should be professional about your criticism. Not just insulting the devs or the game. But actually formulate your grievances. Its so laughable that he is 15 years in the industry and is still incapable of giving valid criticism without immediately throwing out insults. What a joke.
I was thinking the same thing, but the word on my tongue was "tactful". Phil has no idea how to be *constructively* critical, and has even less of an idea about how to do so with tact and focus.
Damn, phil is just straight up lying throughout this video. Saying he watches kill cams, saying you cant criticize review copies of games, saying he has friends... the list goes on. Also, i think he was prob getting early copies when rambo was working at gamestop.
Phil unknowingly admitted that being polite, professional and non-toxic to get review copies would mean changing his entire personality. He's too real for that, dood! 🤣
It's funny to listen to Dave talk about the days where he "worked hard" to be the first one to get his gameplay uploaded for others to see, but nowadays he looks down on anyone (who isn't him) chasing those day one views. It's equally hilarious to hear him talk about the days where everyone had to buy the games. That's rich as hell, coming from the guy who hasn't bought a game in the last decade+. All his money is given to him and lately he's even been begging for game codes so he doesn't have to spend any of that donated money on games.
His "refusal" to receive promo copies is a smokescreen for the fact nobody would give him one. It's about as admirable as a gambling addict "giving up gambling" when they're banned from every casino in the region.
26:13 The reason he doesn't get early review copies is because he can't. He isnt offered anyway. Hes already admitted the reason he doesnt get those or sponsorships anymore is because of the detractors ruining it for him. He eventually retconned that into being 'his' choice. But it isnt lol
Whenever DSP talks about knowing people the literal first thought through my head is always "who? you have no friends and the rest of the internet wouldn't touch you with a 10 foot proverbial pole." If Phil had any legitimate contacts regarding any of the idiocy he spouts, he'd know he's chatting complete crap, but he doesn't, because he doesn't know anyone, and he doesn't know anything.
50:45 Goalpost. The other day and many times prior he went up and down about him being a variety streamer means he isn’t playing just one game. Now when his podcast is getting criticized he explicitly broadens his definition to include it. It’s not just the games now, he’s dipping his toes into everything. He can’t just do games dood what if ALL OF GAMING were to be banned from the internet? He’d have nothing left to fall back on. Amazing
Pre-stream length is a valid complaint and has been for years. Phil is trying to undermine the credibility of the suggester every time for a reason; Doing a shorter pre-stream means less of the cult mentality, the soap box standing and the flipping and spinning of things to suit his narrative. And ironically, it would also result in making more actual content. All of those things are some of the most toxic element in Phil's streams, but also his own personal therapy session/hostility session. He doesn't want it to change.
Phil has played several review copies before, in recent memory he played Mario and Sonic at the Olympics (Tokyo 2020 probably) and he begged for money to play that game even though it was already given to him by this mysterious company, he even dropped that game and called it shit, even though it was a review copy which according to him you can't say that stuff! When it comes to review copies - 9 times out of 10 you're encouraged to be honest and open with your opinions and thoughts, you don't have to censor yourself and unless they specify that there are missing elements with the early version or parts that should be hidden until the official reveal then you can basically say what you want. If you're purposely making the game look bad and you're talking shit for no real reason then of course you'll be blacklisted in the future, but you can just put your name on a list and companies can contact you / you can request keys whenever you want and it's up to them if they allow it, so once they see "DSPGaming" they'll press "Deny"
He can't even reduce the time spent on the podcast by 30 minutes. He can't give in and lament that he might be wrong about something. Dark's pride is too powerful at this point. Does he really think he;s interesting enough to justify a Q&A section every single day? The only questions he even answers are about food. Anything else he's asked he just says "Ahh I'd have to think about it. I don't know dude, I'd have to think about it." Then just skips answering. Questions that are legit just his opinion. How wild is that?
His rant about review copies is thrown out by one simple fact: he HAS gotten review copies in the past. I believe it was some Sonic/Mario Olympic game. He admitted he got it as a review copy. So he knows how the system works because HE USED TO GET THE COPIES. And he is making up so much to make himself seem superior because nobody will give him review codes anymore. It's the same reason he doesn't have sponsors. It isn't that he rejects them. It's nobody wants HIM. But he can't accept that, so he's fashioned in his mind an explanation where he is perfect and it's him against the world that hates him. What a joke.
The part that gets me is where he mentions cahtent creators having to bite their tongue. Sure but isn't that normal behavior? If something gets me angry I do not instantly lash out, I control myself. If you are frustrated and lash out instantly you are behaving like a child.
Phil's rant here is completely insane. He really thinks that when he whines every time he dies he's being "honest" when he's really just being a bitch who refuses to acknowledge his mistakes.
I think it's safe to say Philip has been flagged and none of those 3rd party PR companies will respond to his emails. He has been told that his "criticism" is toxic so now the review copy system is toxic.
Phil gets upset no matter what game he plays, as he hates video-games. A lot of times he looks bored out of his mind. When it comes to blaming the game, he has no spatial awareness at all. How many times in a FromSoftware game like "Bloodborne" or "Dark Souls" he fights an boss, backs to a corner and then gets killed? Too many times. He then blames the game and insults developers because his dumbass backed into a corner and therefore made an mistake.
I never understood why he does this bs about his pride in not being a shill when it's because he doesn't have the ability to because no company likes him. It's like bragging to someone that you chose to not go to some big deal person's party last night when you weren't invited in the first place. He keeps changing things to both be his detractor's fault that he can't do some things, but also wants it to be his choice why he doesn't do it.
It would be an extremely safe bet to say that we can expect this donated game beg to continue in the near future for any game that he's ahn the fence about/doesn't wanna spend the money on and that he knows the dents wanna see him play (for whatever strange reason)
This is Phil arguing that he should be allowed to be juvenile vs professional. There are plenty of people that not only get early review copies but are ambassadors for a particular game that will be negative about the product. The difference is saying something is bad in an analytical way or simply saying something is shit without thinking about it while shitting on anyone involved.
I've not watched Jim Sterling in ages but I remember back when I watched The Jimqusition, Jim stated that review embargoes were more in place so no reviewer could get a "head start" by dropping their review early. Every reviewer would have to drop their review on the same day, because if person A drops it three days prior, no one would care for the opinion of B to Z. I could be mistaken, but I've always thought it was to level the playing field, bar situations where companies have used the embargo to silence negative criticism.
@@bluesandman7566 That makes a lot of sense as well. It has been a while since I watched Jim's content, especially earlier ones (that may have even predated the Digital Homicide drama) so if I'm getting confused/misquoting what was said then I stand corrected.
He's only shitting on review copies and people that accept them because he fumbled the bag with the ones he was given. Remember his Mario and Sonic at the Olympics review? That was a review copy and he relentlessly shat on the game and refuse to play it
I'd like to point out to Mr I'm not a shill refusing a copy of bg3 from the resident racist in his chat Candian Kirk, before bg3 won goty. But had no problem begging for the game and wanting to play it after it won goty
DSP has just too much integrity for review copies. He cares about fairness too much. He cares about honesty too much. He cares about his audience too much.
@@nugzmedallion8929 I'm glad others enjoy it, that's what I wanted. It's fun for me to type out instead of that "1st" stuff you see in other's comments & fun for others including Atlus to look for in the comments. 🤣
It’s really like watching a lil boy try and tell you “no I really do have a superpower and it’s better than anyone’s in history. Now allow me to explain”
I remember the review embargo for Cyberpunk 2077. They allowed people to play early and say what they wanted. They just said you can't stream or record game play, but you can use promotional videos.
Phil is such a coward He will talk so much shit about other streamers/RU-vidrs but will never actually drop any names. Also I love he admitted that Kat would rather watch other streamers then him
His issue with getting review copies is he cant follow basic contract rules like respect other players, don't use slurs or harmful language in your playthrough he tends to drop the r slur especially in cod, and has to be done between x and y days. Plus he can't even figure out tutorials or aoe attacks that are clearly animated the world is better off if people aren't seeing his review copy videos
If he was smart he’d rebrand his “Suggestion Box” segments as “The people that help me pay my rent give fair and reasonable feedback and I egotistically roast them while ignoring anything that could positively influence me or my channel” I think if he marketed it like that people would at least respect the self awareness. He literally just immediately denies, discredits, and insults everything his fans took time out of their day to say.
It's amazing that in the same sentence he called other content creators 'rubes' and idiots for going into drama/political content, and then said he's not there yet, maybe in the future. Trends and topic are only for idiots up until DSP starts doing them, then they are meaningful. Minecraft, Reacting, Capture cards, editing....
I wish during his daily Q&A they would just start asking pointless questions like "why do they call it a loveseat and not a louch or little couch?" or "what color is a mirror?" or "when did they start calling dirigibles blimps?" and just watch him flip his shit.
In all my time playing games, I've only gotten two advanced copies of games while I was doing freelance for a small website. He's right about contacting the PR firm as I had to do the same for Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments and LEGO The Hobbit but if I remember correctly, those firms didn't attach any restrictions for said reviews but I enjoyed both games so I obviously reviewed them positively. You're right on the fact that Phil would rather have his dents give him the games than make an effort to reach out to PR firms to get games for free.
What Phil says isn't even true. Yes there are publisher that bury you under a flood of NDA's. Halo Infinite was a good example. Some content creator came out later and admitted how pressured they were by Microsoft. But this is usually not the case anymore. More developer's want content creator to feature their games without any restrictions. I bought tons of games, mostly indie and AA, I saw on streams of content creators I enjoy.
Nah, there was [plenty of cases that Phill got early review copies no problem. He doesn't do now due to his lack of opportunity not because he wants to stand his ground. Most devs already knows how toxic Phil is against devs when he is playing and losing in a videogame.
Why does he talk about game reviewers chasing day one views when he's willing to literally refuse to play entire games that his chat is asking for in order to maximize day one views on new releases? Absolutely no self awareness.
I like how it's now become a "talk show" because he can't understand that a lot of people don't want to sit through over an hour of him talking about nothing
Let's say, for example, You get a review copy of Mario and Sonic at the Olympics for the Wii, wait until the games release to play it and quit after an hour and then when your viewers state you wasted $60, You laugh at them and THEN claim it was a review copy.
"Let's talk about the pros and cons of review copies" >Creature who vehemently railed against review copies, calling creators who acquire or review the games "shills" and suggesting journalism and review copy "practices" are killing gaming
I love when DSP uses his Meaningful Business Degree to spout half-truths about things he doesn't relatively understand. I agree that any blatant shilling or journo ass-kissing is the worst part of "Gaming Inc" but Phil acting like he wouldnt jump at the chance to make virtually free money while acting like his hard work got him a review copy is laughable. Phil is upstairs literally crying right now because he probably has his name on every review request form ever.
24:24 I'll translate and contextualize this for you. Back when he was with Machinima, he'd rush every single game and jump to the next to get day 1 views. That's it. Review copies only represented an issue to him not because of what those reviewers would say about the game, but only because those letsplayers would end up beating him in the race to the day one views.
The real reason why DSP doesn’t get game review copies early isn’t because he doesn’t wanna butter up the developers. It’s because nobody wants anything to do with DSP. DSP is simply bad for business. How many times a week do viewers gotta hear the world’s smallest violin 🎻 play whenever DSP talks like this? He thinks people actually care. Ehh except the dents that do believe his bullsh*t.
Hey phil have you tried using review copies to save some money? 30 minute rant about why he cant do that because he wants to call the developers every slur he can raxx out in 20 seconds
I don't know why he's so "I'm not kissing any game developers butt!" Rewatch his fallout 4 playthrough he constantly states how great Bethesda is. DSP would absolutely kiss any developers ass if they gave him a free game. Hell CD project could've given him cyberpunk on its horrific launch, and he would've sang about how great the game is. DSP is a shill through and through, but he can only shill for himself because no one else will touch him.
Surprised no one's brought up how intense the cult speak was with the review copy segment. Especially almost /yelling/ about how people should not and cannot trust the RU-vidrs/streamers they enjoy, but Phil is the only trustworthy person because he's true, honest, and not a "schmoozer". It's really mortifying to watch outside of anyone providing commentary on it. I've had a really hard time watching Phil recently. It's tough to watch a guy who's only commentary or acknowledgement to his audience is a continuous attempt to manipulate them into seeing his victimhood or hating those that aren't Phil/oppose Phil's ideals. I cannot imagine being in a room with him. Even with the comfort of a screen being a barrier between an audience and the guy, he's almost suffocating with the way he talks to and about his audience.
The cult speak has been really bad as of late. Now that you mention it its very obvious but while making the vid it didnt even cross my mind cause its just normal dsp speak at this point
Remember this is DSP. This is the guy who had one, "ONE", UNO! bad experience at walmart. Then talks about how walmart is the most evil company on the planet and refuses to ever shop there. And that bad experience was just the fact it took 2 hours to find his joystick, which I dont see the problem as it probably takes phil on average 2 hours to find his "joystick" anyways. So he should be use to it. Even better this is the guy who has blamed the trolls for YEARS on why he cant get review copies and the such, now he tells them its because he has to censor himself. To point out something. Phil isnt even close to the most prolific youtuber. He isnt even on the top 50.
While I always am of the mindset to try a game out for myself and see what I think of it, I always listen to or watch game reviews if games I’m interested in. Mostly to get a better grasp of what the game is like but also to see what other people think of said game/s. I think more so now since games have become more expensive and many have lost quality. I can’t but games upon release and if it’s a game I get a bad vibe from, I pass on that. If it’s a game I still have interest in, I wait for it to be on sale. In the end, I do think reviews can be helpful. Maybe it’s not something everyone is into but it’s there for those who want or need it, of which I’m grateful for. 🙂
Review embargo exists as a simple quick testing ground for the devs to the reviews and check what issue that is severe so they can fix it since games are getting really big by the minute. Also the NDA exists for people who are -tards like phil because he runs his mouth like no tomorrow + an insurance if they really did spilled the beans so they will legally fuck them over financially ( phils weakness) and how big companies are nowdays they will ask for at least 6-7 figures minimum. And let's be honest no company wants to deal with PHIL because he is a RISK for your company to sponser.
@25:57 the reason DSP doesn't get early copies is because any publisher that did would get attacked mercilessly, and lets be honest Phil doesn't play games off stream so it doesn't matter if he got it early if he is under embargo. Also getting a game early would require work and like you said Phil knows a dent will buy it for him anyway. He is doing what he always does which is trying to pretend that his sloth is actually a virtue.
50:12 ok, so couple things here. First off: Phil, if you feel so strongly about the podcast, you can find a happy medium. Instead of an hour and a half, cut it in half to 45 minutes a day. Then you make EVERYONE happy, and you'll likely give less for your detractors to make about you (doubtful, but possible). Secondly, Phil, you won't have the worry about having to pick a side on an issue. Because we already know whay will happen: you will have a stance, and everyone in chat either has to agree with you, shut up, or get banned. You can't handle contrary viewpoints, so the show you're describing will not exist. It'll be Phil Says, and anyone who feels differently is wrong, because Phil is the smartest, greatest man in the world with the absolute best hair. Sound good? Sounds good to me too. And by the way, Kat agrees.
In the first 5 seconds, he's wrong lol. Plenty streamers just get emails offering them early access or review codes. How the fuck does somebody doing this for 15 years not even know this and I do?
Phil is just upset companies refuse to work with him, as others are pointing out. Also, he is the first guy to switch his stance when it benefits him. It’s simple, if Phil doesn’t benefit from it, he will dislike and attack the idea of whatever it is. If it does benefit him, he will shill hard as possible.
Phil's "only positive comments" is I BELIEVE in reference to one of two things. 1. Machinima's Xbox controversy where Machinima partners were offered money for only reviewing the xbone in a positive light. or 2. I believe the game was Shadow of Mordor requiring only positive games reviews for early review copy. I think Ubisoft also did this with one of the Assassins Creed games but I cant be certain on that particular game. TotalBiscuit did a video about 8 years ago now about objectivity in games review and while dated, it does address the issue that Phil seems to have with early video game copies as well as objectivity in games reviews. I think Angry Joe and Jim Sterling also had takes on objectivity in games reviews as well as youtubers being blacklisted from early review copies for having negative reviews and all of this was around the same time of gamergate, and when videos on youtube were beginning to overtake traditional games media (websites and magazines) The problem with Phil's take is for all of the hell that gamergate did to the online landscape, it actually did a lot of good for games journalism and disclosure of compensated reviews or only giving positive reviews in exchange for early review copy. These days gamers are more than happy to reveal shady contracts requiring only positive reviews. Yes, those sketchy reviews and promotions and undisclosed ads will still be out there, but you also have gamers more than willing to disclose. Phil is still living back 10 years ago when these practices were still around as his excuse for not doing either sponsored content or for getting on a PR list. The reality is Phil is likely blacklisted from most PR except for the most sketchy. His behaviours of the past have branded him as a loose cannon who jerks off on stream and says racist and homophobic slurs with a lot of trolls who will negate any positivity of having Phil be a marketing piece. Not to mention, a LOT of sponsorship campaigns require a certain number of views and a lot of them require a certain amount of clickthrough on their ads and others require a certain conversion rate (ie people buying stuff). Many will require a certain ad copy to be read for a sponsorship. Early games copies usually have a requirement of time spent playing their game. In order to apply for either an early game copy or a sponsorship, you need to show proof of your videos performance. Show proof you stream to X amount of people in a day. Show proof that your videos have X amount of views. Phil just doesnt have the reach to overcome the negativity surrounding him.
23:43 This just seems like an example of sour grapes to me I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Phil was actually jealous that these other streamers get review codes and he's just ranting at this point
What’s funny is Dsp wants to do chill streams so why not do early copy streams and just chill he doesn’t have to talk about the game and can interact with chat.
Since Phil knows everything... why take suggestions? He is obviously so smart he has thought of EVERYTHING previously and made the smartest decision ever... oh, and he thinks you're a moron half the time.
Worth A Buy gets review copies... and Mack is as hard on games and devs as anyone can be. But its pertinent honest criticism, not a toxic tirade laden with hyperbole and insults. God forbid DSP have to make any effort at all to do anything that would benefit his channel and expand his brand. Its easier to complain, beg and throw blame outward. He is terrified of success because it would mean he has to continue being successful. If people thought hebwas doing well... even though he constantly insists he is... they wouldn't be so easy to manipulate into giving him pity money.
These suggestion box segments bring the absolute worst out of him don't they? He is just sitting there coping about why he won't be remembered fondly.... cause you are a genuinely not nice guy. Why companies won't work with you. because it's one thing to say a game is bad but to get angry at the devs. Being PC isn't about just being nice and holding your tongue. But he has to cope cause it's easier to be the man alone on his island who will only be remembered as a joke. Not fondly. He needs to get over that. He screwed it up and refuses to move on or admit he is not cut out for this. Every day he edges closer to legit schitzophrenia. t's showing bad when he has to cope this hard just to avoid admitting he is the problem in his life.
