Chatting about the bad behavior within the dive industry...
I think it goes without saying that this does not apply to everyone. Still, the point of this is to point out that the heavy undertones of the industry are not particularly welcoming and I really hope that it's something we can work towards moving past. I wholeheartedly believe that scuba is for everyone and we should welcome all with open arms and offer more patience and understanding towards our differences.

I got recreational certified 35 years ago (PADI). The good folks working @ our local dive shop aren’t yet even 30 years old. There, and @ other shops, I often get a skepticism vibe-as if my certification doesn’t count or can’t be trusted because it’s so old. And there’s the immediate push to take the refresher course because I don’t dive at least once every 6 months. C’mon… this is recreational scuba, not brain surgery. I did an advanced course recently in Jamaica, but that too seems always to be met with skepticism-like, it doesn’t count as real ‘training’ because it was run by Jamaican locals at a resort. Again… the advanced course isn’t rocket science. Just stop with the elitist nonsense. Anyway, you make great content on here, and I’m thankful for it. Don’t let the turkeys get you down.

Learning how to dive was the best decision I ever made. Yes, diving is expensive, but it is so worth it because you get to travel the world and see new things. Not many people don't get to do what we do. So, I consider myself blessed. So far, I have been to the Florida keys. North Carolina, Roatan, and Bimini in the Bahamas. In November, I am doing my first liveabroad. Great video.

I really don't think it's that expensive. Unless you're traveling to dive and have a few local spots you enjoy, its quite affordable. I also wouldn't consider it toxic. I've had generally the same experience regardless of what hobby I'm engaged in. There are jerks as well as supportive groups in most activities. You just aim to surround yourself with the latter of the two.

Just the initial certification is hundreds of dollars which is a huge barrier for tons of people. Compare that with soccer or basketball where all you need is a ball for around $20 to at least start, thats a HUGE discrepancy. We are so privileged to have had the spare income or ability to work for our dive experiences.

I think you're right and wrong. For a committed recreational diver the cost per dive isn't crazy expensive, particularly if you don't do a lot of travel or boat diving. However, the high upfront costs are undoubtedly a barrier to entry. Casual diving is expensive no matter how you slice it.

You should see where I am diving. Shops having fights on the shoreline. Calling the park rangers on each other. I have seen instructors accusing other instructors of killing students. You have swear allegiances to a shop and never stray or speak to someone from another shop. It's bad.

Keep your head up. I know I’m a man so I won’t ever see things through your perspective but you may find some comfort that we have to put up with this too, especially “fuck ups” like me who are prone to making mistakes, I get eaten alive by these head cases. At the end of the day I ask myself do I have fun doing this activity and I keep coming back to a yes so I keep doing it.

This certainly wasn't meant to be a video to say anyone should quit diving but just to try to encourage more positive behavior. Your comment seems like you are a very conscious and understanding person so I doubt you are one of the problem individuals. Keep it up

I have a close friend who kind of checks the boxes for adrenaline junkies: sky diving, rock climbing, whitewater rafting and diving, and he said all those other communities also have fairly toxic communities. He believes it’s not the sport necessarily but the extreme sport nature of them that pulls that macho testosterone-fueled buffoon in. There was a really good dive video from Monty Hall where he went off to find out why so many divers were dying at the blue hole in Dahab, and at the end of the episode, they pretty much concluded it was testosterone. All but one diver were male within a certain ‘untouchability/invincibility’ age range.

Thank you for bringing up this subject. I'm a middle-aged white male that's been diving for 35 years and I do feel like in the dive community I'm judged before I even open my mouth which is funny because I'm a quite introvert. In the last 15 years I have seen the elitist, egotistical, I'm better than you attitudes come from females just as much as males, young and old. Most of the boat dives in the last several years have been run by young adults both female and male with the exception of the captain, and they think they are the sh*t, even though they've only been diving for a few years. I just sit there and observe while keeping my mouth shut. An example that just recently happened on a rainbow divers boat.. I watched the DM chew a client out for putting on sunscreen that wasn't reef safe, not that she shouldn't of brought it up but she could of done it in a much more caring and diplomatic way. I thought to myself, this poor person may not dive again. Then the DM turns around and passes a spray bottle around with a baby shampoo and water mixture. Clearly she hasn't done her research on baby shampoos affect on reefs. I just sat there with my mouth shut. The entire day was filled with her being a know it all. I'm tired of the attitudes... just be a good human. It's not hard to be kind, compassionate and empathetic, which in my eyes is what makes a good human. I find similar attitudes in the ski industry.

yesssssss, once you find good people you're good! But I do feel the same where I have had men who have made me cry on the way home because I felt not good enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hear you!!! I have had some tell me well I have this many dives as a way to flex like ok but are we not here for the fun of it..but yes, I agree some divers can make a dive uncomfortable because even though they say they are so good enough, like I've seen them make mistakes and I don't say a thing but they are the first to be like you ruined the dive because..(totally understand this).

Struggle to understand why people should be so nasty towards you ! As a mid fifties male with thirty years diving experience I'd aim every time for meeting professionals like yourself who have a genuine understanding and respect. I have no time for the social clique and the egotistic types and plenty of them include females too. They have a problem. You don't. When we get chance to visit Florida we'll dive with your company.

Oh I feel lucky to be part of a small dive club (a BSAC club) that I’ve never had to experience this. Perhaps the more I travel I will- hopefully not. I suppose you will come into contact with a lot more divers than me.

Sorry you have had such bad experiences, especially with military. We aren’t all bad 😊. I dive with people of all experience levels and one of my biggest takeaways from 20 years of the military is that I can learn something from everyone. As for me Knowing when to keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth closed is key of course. I guess I was lucky enough to come up in the Army where as long as the intent is met it doesn’t so much matter how you get there and if they intent is to dive and have fun and maybe learn some stuff along the way then let’s go! The gate keeping thing is definitely something that happens in the military but true leadership is more of a gate tender, as in this is the gate lets get through it together. The military is really good at taking the fun out of everything so not sure why anyone would want to bring that aspect of it into rec diving. 😂😂. I truly hope you have some better experiences soon!

Hi. I like your videos I find that you are great fun to watch . Not everyone wants to dive a wing and it's ok and your wetsuit is a waterproof cant go wrong there. Yeah I agree that there can definitely be some exclusive personalities in diving. I’ve been fortunate enough to find a club near me in Como with very welcoming and compassionate people, open to all levels of divers from those who are just interested in finding out more to those who want to do OWD all the way up to DM courses… but you’re totally right about the old school men having that big ego, I’ve seen plenty of that around as well and I don’t get why 😒 it’s a pity too! You make a lot of really good points here, and I’m glad you’ve shared your thoughts on it all. Thanks!

I think a lot of it has to do with the forced buddy system and people feeling like just because they have a lot of dives they are good divers. That couldn't be farther from the truth. I think some people are elitist but that's true in any hobby or activity. I probably come across as "elitist" but it's really that I'm just hyper focused when engaged in dive prep and the actual dive. I'm not a snob or judge other people but I tend to avoid the social aspect because I have had bad experiences with "buddies". I have been diving with the same buddy for 25 years but on numerous occasions we have been forced to take with us a third person who did not have a buddy. Some people are dangerous. I'm not putting my life on the line for someone who is a risk to themselves and others. It's just a fact. There are some great divers out there but the vast majority aren't. People that have no idea how to use a compass or don't even bring one on a dive......air hogs that force me to end my dive in 20 minutes because they are low on air. In my world of diving you should have a plan and stick to the plan. That includes setting compass headings, managing air supply and setting turnaround pressures, etc. A lot of people just hop in the water the wing it. That bothers me and lot of other divers I know a real lot. Experienced divers don't want to deal with so many nonchalant divers and it's gets very frustrating because people don't taking diving as seriously as they should. And oftentimes people lose money because of careless divers. I've had 2 tank dives end after one dive because a person (claimed 10k dives) put here bc on their used 500 psi tank and almost drowned at the start of her second dive. So everyone on that boat lost a half day of time and money while the coast card had to come out and rescue this person. Mistakes are fatal. I'm fine with it being a very serious and perhaps perceived elite community. I also don't think that everyone should be a scuba diver. Some people get and it others are just downright dangerous to themselves and others around them. We're not talking about pickleball here.

Soy nuevo OW con 9 inmersiones... en mi curso, me tocó bucear con un compañero que simplemente no puede hacerlo... De verdad, no puede bucear, se pone muchooooo en peligro. No sé si vaya a conseguir la certificación en el futuro, pero yo nunca tomaría a un dive buddie como él porque se expone demasiado al peligro, parece que no puede evitarlo. A mi me gusta que las cosas se hagan bien, pero más que eso, me gusta la gente respetuosa... Es muy importante respetarnos entre nosotros. Tal vez no pensemos igual que otra persona, pero no podemos ser inmediatamente groseros con ellos... porque así se alimenta el "odio irracional". Yo soy burlón y muy irrespetuoso con mis amigos y con las escorias de personas, pero es muy difícil para la gente conseguir ser cualquiera de esos... Yo estoy deacuerdo con el compa éste y con fully submerged. 1.-Hay que ser selectivos en todo para obtener un buen resultado; 2.-Las cosas se deben hacer bien; 3.-Hay que evitar la mayor cantidad de riesgos posibles; 4.-Hay que ser respetuosos con los demás; 5.-No se juzga a nadie sin datos suficientes, y si el veredicto es malo, se es lo más respetuoso posible. 6.-Hay distintos objetivos para cada persona en hacer la misma cosa, cada objetivo tiene exigencias distintas, hay que entender eso y respetarlo.

As an upper 20’s male getting back into diving (college drained my funds). The best instructors, dive masters, guides i have had are female. There are 2 guys I’ll mix in with that, but for a majority of my experiences the older men have made me second guess my decision to come back to the sport. With my other hobbies, they tend to be male dominated but my wife and I have had nothing but good interactions in those other communities. We’ve gotten several thousand dollars worth of training/gear from these guys. We didn’t ask for it but they offered and did it enthusiastically. Elitism and the lack of desire to spread knowledge and help people grow seems to be a real issue with diving

No it's everywhere. I think I'm made hyper aware of it because they aren't afraid to say what's really on their mind behind a screen. In person they're less likely to be as crass

I know the negativity will always hit harder than any good experience/comments/people, but try not to let the bastards get you too down. What you show and do directly helps things get better. It won't feel like it, but if even one chill person watches your videos and joins the community that's one more positive voice out there. I always picture "Old man yells at clouds" when I see comments like you are describing.

I am a relative tadpole in my dive journey and as my scuba skill set expands, the more I realize how little I know. EVERYONE has something that they can teach me even if it’s what I shouldn’t be doing. We as divers should be all inclusive and welcoming to any and all that are interested in our awesome sport! If we want to raise awareness of the peril of our planet and its oceans, let’s get more people in and under the water!!! Lastly, of altruism doesn’t work for you, consider the scales of economy. The more people that purchase scuba related gear, the more gear will be manufactured and the more gear that is manufactured, the less it will cost and it will drive refinement and innovation!!! Let’s grow our sport folks!!! 😊

Am I wrong or were you more speaking about the toxic males as being fellow dive industry people? I think they exist in most sports/hobbies. There are toxic individual male personalities who think they know everything in all of the sports I do (Diving, golf, mountain bikes, paragliding). The worse ones are the ones working in retail who often aren't super skilled and use/abuse the "coach/teacher" identity. Their self esteem is 95% tied to being "a dive instructor", "bike coach", "golf instructor/coach", etc. In your experience, I do think that the older men may view women's roles differently than what the norm is today. Some of these old farts are threatened by women doing certain jobs that were male dominated when they grew up. The best response to a know it all is just politely acknowledge what they said and ignore them and their advice. Don't engage if they are full of shit. Align yourself with the best people who communicate open and flexible ways of going about diving....

It definitely exists with industry professionals but it's also very prevalent with non-professionals as well. The "I have hundreds/thousands of dives, I don't need training" type. I do my best not to engage but sometimes there's not much choice because it can be dangerous or occasionally I've had to step in to stand up for divemasters/students/guests being berated unnecessarily

Oh my God, you need to get over it. You are so wrong. Not all activities are affordable. After 40 years of diving, I've never been with a group who is all toxic. What tends to be the only toxic problem is the single divorced females that have a problem. Get over it!
