Demo of the Casio SK-1 in original state (not circuit bent). The SK-1 is the first "toy sampling keyboard" and also the first of the Casio SK series. The 8-bit / 9,38 kHz sound is rather grainy - much worse than a 8-bit fairlight. But it sounds interesting, it is great for lofi sounds and noises.
With looping of very short samples interesting waveforms can be produced. I made use of this a lot in this video. Another source for new waveforms is the "harmonic synthesis", which allows you to add harmonics to a sine wave. The harmonics are always static. But there are some preset envelopes, which can shape the loudness.

When I first saw this in my local Walmart, I bought it immediately. On the demo unit on display in the store, I sampled in, "F*#k you, Kid" as I was leaving. A kid walked up to it a second or two later and touched a key. When it said, "F*#k You, Kid" he started cracking up!! Pretty sure he bought one immediately as well...now I gotta go look on the internet and try to find another one of these. I would loooooove to get my hands on one again...Ol Sarge...

It's a shame so many people butcher these instruments in the name of circuit bending. It's cool as it is, bend the uncool ones.

People circuit bend them because they're a perfect for that sort of thing, that said I think because of this, the prices on these things has skyrocketed on eBay. But yeah, I agree that in their unaltered state they are just as cool.

Alan Rizkallah I would sample the shortest click of the tine of a comb and loop it - you get some really ethereal effects from this box. I would take it out with batteries and my mates would shout swear words into it! I remember too the polyrythmic effects in the demo caused when you’d loop clicks - no key tracking! I think it was £99.95, great value, but when you think what you get in an OP-Z now . . .

i just discovered that these things can do granular synthesis (as you show) and it blew my mind. also just discovered: if you have it in solo mode and press the sample loop button in the middle of a pitch glide, it does this awesome glitch where it glides up from a rock bottom pitch that you can't otherwise access, it has a very satisfying bit crushed crunch down at the bottom and the exaggerated acceleration of the loop over that long pitch distance is quite dramatic, good material for some sort of dirty tension build. and the distance between the keys you're gliding between determines how long it takes to rise from rock bottom, the further the distance the quicker it rises oddly. somebody else try it and tell me i'm not crazy lol

Although the sampling was fun, my favorite sadly abandoned functionality and which to me is one of the best ever, was to be able to record note by note, be able to delete that note in case you entered it wrong, then with only two keys, play the whole perfectly recorded song in the time you wanted, so it could be rearranged to perfection. Why the H* did Casio remove these features and why the H* didn't other companies made them til today? I am having to redo this wonderful stuff by creating my own little virtual synth now.
@AnalogAudio1
@AnalogAudio1 12 лет назад
the grainy sounds you hear in the video were done with the sampling option, not with the harmonic synthesizing. They are extremely short samples which were looped.

I took a risk and got one of these from the old junk market in Coney Island for $10. It works perfectly. I still annoy everybody with it. The pipe organ sound is nice and loud. 4 key poly play is pretty good for a toy keyboard of that size from it's time.

I found my SK-1 at a flea market ( $5. ) I already have LOTS of effect pedals ( I have played guitar in " Bar Bands" since the late 1960s ) . I already knew what a Mellotron is , and was immediately drawn to this keyboard when I saw the model name , as it lay in a cardboard box amongst other miscellania .My point to all this is , get some kind ( ANY kind ) of effect pedal (s) and have BIG FUN !!!

I had gotten one of these for my sister back in 86. She didn't do much with it, however. About a year later I messed around with it a bit and had some rather nice sequencing abilities. Entered in notes and chords and then she could play with that by tapping the beat, so figured out I had to set things up for her and she would play with it. But, sadly, it couldn't save anything, so power it off, and everything is gone, including any sample.

Some of the sounds you were sampling then playing back made it sound as if the keyboard had been circuit bend, when in fact it hasn't been, that's a good thing in my book as I don't exactly like circuit bending too much. I've not used one of these before, but I find them very interesting indeed.

Ryan gosling's character in Terrance malick's "song to song" used this keyboard quite a few times & I love the sound along with the music they created with it in the film, just have no idea how they did it. but how to make the short loops though?! I tried this so many times but it seems that my loop points are always slow... how do i change this so I can make the loop points shorter and make similar synth sounds??
@AnalogAudio1
@AnalogAudio1 7 лет назад
the answer is that simple: make short noises, like finger snips, teeth clap, slap in the face/ass... and it will make a short loop :-) You can't change the sample settings, the processor decides
@boimesa8190
@boimesa8190 7 лет назад
but is there a way to cheat it into making the loop points shorter, because mine just doesn't seem to do so... The shortest loop points i've been able to create seem to just come at random and only appear to sound like an actual note around the last three keys on the right... :(
@AnalogAudio1
@AnalogAudio1 7 лет назад
Like said, short noises are the only way. Remember, this is a toy keyboard. But the Yamaha VSS-1 allows loop point modification, it is the better sampling keyboard. But without drums, whithout harmonic synthesis, without auto power off. But with a better samping engine. You even have a full ADSR for volume, like on a synthesizer. The sampling is even better than on the Yamaha VSS-200.
@boimesa8190
@boimesa8190 7 лет назад
ok but i have the sk1 xD so there's no way to cheat then i guess...

Wish there was more of a focus on the sampling. Customizable envelopes, low/high pass filters, LFOs... the Chord, rhythm, and tone crap is pretty worthless. I'm disappointed in this thing, but I bought it at Goodwill for $5 so it could be worse.
@AnalogAudio1
@AnalogAudio1 7 лет назад
well, it was intended as a fun instrument. Every little Casio keyboard had to have rhythms built in.
@carterh3182
@carterh3182 7 лет назад
AnalogAudio1 yeah I figured it was a toy when I bought it, but knowing that so much space was dedicated to things other than sampling is kind of irritating. Like it could at least have 2 knobs to let you trim the start and end of the sound so that you can have a continuous sound. It's mostly the synthesizing function that I don't like.
@AnalogAudio1
@AnalogAudio1 7 лет назад
on the Yamaha VSS-30 you could set the position/length of the loop, also you have a free programmable ADSR for volume. In my opinion also the sound is better, the whole sampling engine is more proffessional, although it's still a toy
@carterh3182
@carterh3182 7 лет назад
AnalogAudio1 looks cool. Really expensive though.
@AnalogAudio1
@AnalogAudio1 7 лет назад
yeah, because it's rare. Although the sampling is better, ADSR is available even for the FM presets, and there are no chord, no rhythm - it did not sell well. Casio's formula with "crappy" preset rhythms and simple sampling options was more successful.
