Hey buddy I just wanted to say thank you I have had my 91 Toyota pickup for 20 plus years and when it had 85000 mi on it the timing chain went which I needed to do a complete overhaul on the head,valves, chain, wp, etc. 50,000 miles later it went again, and I parked it and haven't touched it up until last month as it's been sitting in the backfield. One day my 2 sons and I walked past it and the memories started flowing,so I threw a batter and cranked it over with some starting fluid and just like that she started up after sitting for over 15 years, but reminded me why I parked it due to the clicking and clattering. After I heard it run I got a bug in me and decided to start pulling it apart which I found the driver's side tensioner bracket up top broke. Yesterday I decided to order a timing chain kit with new tensioners and I'm getting ready to put her back together this weekend. But the main reason about this message is thanking you for a refreshing my memory of what all I removed, and gave me a little remembrance now of how to be putting it back together. Thank you from your new subscriber.

Another good video man! Preparing to do my '90 4Runner 22RE manual right now. Printed out the article you mentioned and will read it. Good tip on removing EFI Fuse. Also great tip on that bolt holding the top of the Timing chain cover that is hidden. Got the timing chain kit, oil pump, and water pump on order from Rockauto coming. I forgot the oil pan gasket so will get that locally. Appreciate the learnings as I'm still pretty new at mechanicing but have learned alot over the past 3 years or so. Pretty fun and learning alot about the 22RE. Love it

no gasket needed for oil pan, I would use RTV Black for the gasket

If your truck is a 5 speed you can put it in 4th or 5th gear block up the tires or set the parking brake and bust it counter clockwise with a breaker bar I made a video on how to do it, you might be able to get away with it on a automatic by putting it in drive. This video is very informative only thing id suggest is pulling the coil wire if you do the bump start method.

Im getting ready to do this on my 91 pickup. 2wd No powersteering and no ac on it. My question being to remove the camgear bolt i just loosen it up and then recheck that everything is on tdc? Also i was reading on the website you recommended, the part where it says the driverside of the chain has more tension than the passenger side. How do i achieve this?

Hey man I've got a 1992 Pickup 2wd (255,000 mi.), I just adjusted my valves and the same thing happened to me! First start it idled high and sounded like a runaway diesel and when I adjusted the idle air control down it still sounds like a damn diesel! I really don't want to do this to my truck, how risky is it to drive with the chain like this?
@NuttyNu

dman, I think you might need a new timing chain. when was the last time it was done ?

@@NuttyNu I bought the truck about a month of go, bad move on my part, I couldn't find any service records except for a frame replacement at 90k. Spent 3,000 on it and I've already replaced thermostat, coolant, rad cap, valve adjustment, valve cover gasket and seals, and air filter. I'm 16 and was expecting a project truck but not to this extent and I think my parents will be pissed if I have to spend another 150 bucks on parts.

@@NuttyNu My research is bringing mixed results. Some say that they're just loud engines and that when you adjust the valves to their spec it's for performance and toyota over tightened them to be quiet from the factory. I did need to loosen at least 4 of the valves now that I think about it. But seeing the difference it made for you makes me worry. I forgot to check the guides while I had the cover off and now it's all back together. I'm considering buying some Lucas oil additive and seeing if that helps anything, as I think the noise is coming from the back of the engine, not the front.

@@NuttyNu Took off the valve cover yesterday and confirmed that the drivers side chain guide is indeed broken about halfway down and has a broken top mounting hole. Do you know if it's possible to do the drivers side without removing the front cover (I can see both mounting bolts), or should I just have a shop replace everything? My parents aren't the happiest, and I don't think I trust myself enough to do the whole job myself in the garage.
