Toyota 4.7 timing belt replacement tip!

Setting the timing is real easy but installing the belt can be tricky if you don't align the marks to the "T" on both cams and the the dowell on the timing cover after "0". After you do this along with having the right tool for the harmonic balancer, the rest is simple!

Spot on tip! Many popular videos on the interwebs fail to mention the ATDC (after top dead center) marks. Even the Haynes books leave it out. Good looking out. 👌🏼

Thank you very much for clarifying this. The factory service manual for my car also mentions 50 degrees ATDC before removing the T belt. I just wanted to verify this before working on it. I believe this method is only for VVTI 2uz engines. Thank you very much once again!

yup, the vvti is what creates that tension for it to spring forward.

After gettimg it to top dead, I like to mark the old belt with lines at the timing marks, remove, and put the new and old belt togther and copy the timing marks to the new. That way you should get the timing exact.

I don’t get what you mean?
@Jayosf415
@Jayosf415 3 месяца назад
@gregcox1994 mark the old belt in 3 places (from the side to the cam and crank) with white paint lines. Take off and Put old belt and new belt tooth to tooth and make the same marking lines on the new belt. Transfer the new belt with lines to the lines you made on the crank and cams. That way you know the belt went in the exact place as the old one

So the t is to replace or remove the belt if your timing is good , if not find tdc ,which would consist of two full rotations at zero and the two cams at the hash, then once you found that rotate to atdc (the cams to T and the nipple next to the zero on the crank on the right).

Very very helpful, that info on the timing marks is worth it’s weight in gold. I changed the water pump, and threw in all new spark plugs. Should I replace all the coils as well? Only two of them had a slight rust color on them and smelled like exhaust, I did have a code for a misfire in #4 before I started the timing belt change.
@DLMGarage
@DLMGarage Год назад
I would only change them all if your going to by all oem. the aftermarkets suck, misfire without setting a code and don't last long. typically because of expense i recommend people change the coils as they go bad.

Now I know why it was a bitch getting my timing belt right I used the tdc marks not the T marks but for the crank pulley I just unhooked the ignition coils found a long bar and bumped the key over and that's also the time I found out about the starter hold so if you use that method be prepared to turn the key back so the engine doesn't spin for 29 more seconds trying to start
@DLMGarage
@DLMGarage 2 года назад
nowhere does it mention that except the Toyota repair manual from the dealer. I fought with it for days until I found that trick out. I learned about the starter hold the hard way and burned out the starter. Didn't even think about it till the starter stopped working lol...

Hello, ran into a problem when putting on the timing belt on my 02, 4.7 tundra. After installing and lining up the marks on the belt with the T, I noticed that the left cam pulley had moved a good 2 inches from the T mark. Any advise on what to do next?

I'm so lost....if you move it to top dead center, then move it to the dowl....how does that not take it off top dead center? I'm lost.
@DLMGarage
@DLMGarage Год назад
by moving it back it releases the tension on the cam, if you try to match the marks without the belt, it will ratchet forward, using those marks before the TDC marks keeps the tension off so once you put the belt on you can turn everything back to the TDC marks.

Break the Crank bolt loose before you set the timing and you can do it the easy way long breaker bar add pipe if you need to reach floor on left side of the truck then either disable spark or use a remote button start switch and make sure everyone is clear and then just bump the starter and your bolt is broke free and it won't be super tight form setting the timing so you will be 😭 to spin it right out easily
@Maxumized
@Maxumized 5 месяцев назад
Wrong…these engines don’t bump. They will cycle a full rotation or two before ECU cuts starter off due to no ignition.

For the 2000-2004 engine do you still have to do the TDC then ATDC lineup? Just wondering if the cams on 2000-2004 are loaded too, I have a 2003 and watched other videos that only lined up to TDC, the engine changed for 2005 years and up.
@DLMGarage
@DLMGarage 2 года назад
not sure, the older model didn'tt have the vvt so I wonder if it's the vvt the creates that crank load not that I think about it. If the crank has the marks then I would do it.

Thank you for the video, I wish YT would show this in search results before I started the job.. You seem like you know these engines, perhaps you would have an answer : Besides the timing I need to do cam seals, and in the process of the timing change the driver side cam pulley spun.do you know by any chance the save way to bring it back to put the bolt into VVT gears before I free the cams ?

@@DLMGarage gotcha well I figured it out now. But for the timing belt the driver side cam pulley jumps easily, spoke w a Lexus tech. It's no biggie had to put it in time, and moved to cam seals from there

Clyde im in the same boat. Im doing my seals 06tundra, and the left bank (driver side) cam service hole were the bolt goes is facing down. Im guessing if the engine is in the ATDC position, whith the belt off i can spin the driver side cams without any interfirance.... i sure hope so. Is that what you did?

oh that's good to hear I was getting a little concerned about my tundra. My 2005 has not had a belt change and it has 150,000 . I'm going to attempt to do this and hopefully have some help from my boyfriend . when it starts cooling down a bit he'll be more up to help me if I need it !
@monkeyking-self-proclaimed7050
Had my first change at 125K and it looks new still. About to replace again at 250K. Attempt to replace it myself. I can take things apart and slowly put it back. My biggest fear is messing this part up. I'm a youtube mechanic so I don't do anything unless I am absolutely sure. I like to do stuff on my own to save money but mainly to ensure that things are done correctly. Notice a lot of mechanics are sloppy.

@DLMGarage
@DLMGarage 2 года назад
@@jrromero4169 the t's on the cams and the dowel on the right of the crank line up so the cam is not under pressure and does not snap back. once you install the belt when you turn the crank, the 0 on the crank should align to the line before the T on the cam. basically t's and dowel line up to remove and install, and 0 and line line up after you spin the crank over. both reference all should line up.
