My mother bought this car 2011 1.33 petrol had it for 9 years now, she's passed it on to me as she passed away. It does the job good car. It is very reliable. Nice review btw
Simple, spacious, comfortable to drive, very open with good views all round as you drive. Some cars can feel a bit cramped and claustrophobic, but not the Auris. I have had my 2012 1.33 litre engine Auris since 2016. I have 194k on the clock and it is super reliable. I reckon I can reach 300k plus with no issues One of the best cars I have had.
i bought 1.4 d4d in 2018 with 115k km. I've done another 113k km, no weird problems that you can meet in German or French cars. Rather, the replacement of the starter (first replacement from new), alternator (first replacement from new) and one brake caliper at this age and mileage should not surprise anyone :D average fuel consumption in real live is 5.4L/100km (30% town, 40% 120-140km/h ride, 30% 80-100 km/h ride) so.. amazing.
The high starter motor raise air to the break system as soon as any start up, so its normal. Its show that the car compression is complete at start up too. Peace and love. Auris ❤
@@gerardocoronado7594 Ooh, is that the 180? I know that in general the diesel engines in this Auris are not quite as dependable as the petrol engines. But the 180 is the top of the line Auris so I'd certainly be tempted by it. If you want the performance then I'd say go for it! If you need economy then you'd be better served by the smaller diesel I'd imagine.
I currently own a 2011 Toyota Auris (Automatic) and in my opinion it's a really nice car. I bought it about a year ago and I had no problems with it, even though my mechanic told me that the previous owner most likely had an accident with it due to some parts that look broken in the front bumper. I've been driving with it a lot, 620 kilometers a day and I had no problems with it so far. I think I spent in total 500$ to fix some parts in the car and that's it.
Owned a 1.6 2009 one since July 2019. Have driven it about 20k miles. Great all rounder and would recommend for the practical motorist any day. Powerful enough for motorway driving, and city streets etc. Still think they missed a trick with not doing a leather interior option, and no auto lights or wipers on mine, but as I said a great car, bigger inside than you'd think. Only issue I have had is that the rear light cluster seals were letting water into the boot when it was heavy raining, so I have since resealed with black silicon and ordered replacement seals to fit, quite common on cars, so not unusual.
Nice one :) I didn't realise they didn't do a leather interior, quite strange! Definitely bigger inside than you think, the rear space is really impressive. Cheers Marc!
I gotta give it to you JJ on cars. You're a real car magician, first you told us the history of the car then you took us on an amazing test drive. Best car review❤
I bought a 1.4 d4d from a family friend in 2020 with 111,000 miles on, I've done 46,000 miles in it since then with very few issues, absolutely excellent car. Looking forward to at least another five years with it I believe.
I recently bought a Mercedes Clk after watching your recommendation of them. I’d wanted one for quite a while and your video kind of persuaded me to just buy it. The car that I was supposed to be selling to accommodate the merc is a D-4D 2.0 Toyota Auris. Thing is, I’ve grown to really like this car and have yet been unable to put it up for sale. It’s quite quick, it’s comfortable, reliable and has just breezed through its MOT again with no advisories at all. I really like this car so much that I’m thinking you know sod it, I’m going to keep it for long trips and use the merc for wafting about locally. The only way I would let it go now would be if someone could find me a 2.2 SR180 in white to replace it. That’s how much I like this car.
Brilliant, glad to have helped you make the choice :) They're both great cars in their own way. So it's nice you can keep hold of them both. SR180 would be great 👌
I really enjoy watching your style of review. Are you able to review the Auris mk2 1.6 v-matic? As there's hardly any reviews on RU-vid for that particular model. Keep up the good work. Thanks
Hi there, I bought an Auris back in 2020. It is the best car I ‘ve ever had! Still love it. In my opinion it has a very warm, but old soul. Maybe you could call it “wise” The car is 15 years old and still feels like it is not older than 5 years. I love it ❤ Thank u for this nice review! All the best from holland
You're welcome, thank you for watching :) I am glad you love the car. They do have a lot of soul, I think the interiors are really interesting and designed differently to any other car.
You deserve way more views. It’s so relaxing and interesting hearing you talk about various cars in a pretty unique way, compared to many other car reviewers and the like. P.S.: I’m getting one of these tommorow. It’s the 2011 one with the 1.33 petrol engine and has around 80k miles on the clock and seems in pretty good shape overall. Hope it’ll serve me well for about 4-5 more years without many visits to the workshop!
The cup holders are genius on this car and quite strong. The fact that it’s in front of the vent means you can keep it warm if it’s a warm drink and cold if it’s a cold drink using the AC.
My mom bought the car new in 2011, I bought it from her a couple years later. Driven 134.000 km, the only thing that has had to replaced are the usual break pads. Now unfortunately, the ac have stopped working. But its 12 years old, guess something have to break with the age. But it a great car!
I have a 2006 one - with 250000kms -160kish miles? It is a 1800cc with CVT trans. I was skeptical about the CVT but after the amount of kms I’ve put on it, just keeps soldering on. I keep trying to find stuff that might go wrong with it but it won’t misbehave! It’s particularly special with these record fuel prices. It’s a 40L tank and I get up to 630km on one tank, as good as a 1.3L alternative (That’s the CVT). It’s not a hybrid, but it’s almost as good as one. It’s running as new, and I only paid $3200 for it. The Toyota CVT trans is so good that at 100kmhr it sits at 1500rpm.
Cool, I didn't know they did a 1.8 CVT! I'm impressed with the very low RPM at 100kph 👍 Trying to figure out where you're from - either Canada or Australia? :)
I have always thought they're quite smart looking cars and I'd be interested to see a review of the Hybrid as it's got the same drive train as my CT200H but is probably a lot lighter, nimbler and even more economical.
Yeah, I get the same feeling that it would be a lighter feeling version of the CT200H :) I would hazard a guess that the CT200 would be a bit better to drive through the corners, as its suspension does seem better tuned to that. The 'official'/optimistic MPG figures are 68 for the CT, and 70 for the Auris. So a fraction better! Means you can be happy with your Lexus choice I think!
@@JJonCars Yes, mine is certainly pretty good through the corners. On a motorway and major road trip I can get 65 to 70mpg but overall on averaging 56 to 58. Quite happy with that. Love the channel btw.
@@Rjhs001 Cheers John :) With the prices of fuel these days, I can only dream of 65-70mpg! I'd be happy with those figures - I've got a couple of friends with CT200Hs, and they seem to get around 50-55 average.
5 years ago I got the first generation of Auris 1.5L CVT (2012) in Japan just after graduated university and got a job. It was a mint condition but very cheap because it was a not popular “washing machine” car. Although I purchased it with £4,500 then run from 18000 to 45000 miles, no problem at all! The washing machine did a perfect job for taking my girlfriend out, then still it is making a comfortable drive for a baby and wife with attaching child seat.
I had a1.6 vvt which was brilliant until some muppet rear ended me and wrote it off. I loved the instruments which Toyota called Optitron. As a family car it is more than a match for a Golf and Focus and will out last them both.
Oh man that's a shame. Totally, I was really surprised with how good the car is, especially given a lot of the lacklustre reviews I remember reading back in the day!
I had an Auris 1.6 petrol from 2008. Considered by many automotive experts to be a boring car... Not true! Similar engines as in this Auris used Lotus Elise from Toyota 1.8l 1ZZ as well as 1.6l 1RZ from the British Toyota factory. In general, the car had a trouble-free gearbox and a fairly powerful engine for highway rides. Good turn as well as correct holding in the curve on bends. Combustion slightly high with the disadvantage of only 5 speed gearbox for that year. It never let me down on long journeys and you could pack a lot of things into it when going to the campsite... The aerodynamic drag was probably even less than in the Ford Focus from the same year. Now I have the Auris Touring Sport CVT Hybrid, the last edition and I have to say that in driving the car I had more impressions from the old Auris, despite the lack of improved suspension at the rear. In my opinion, Auris should be continued in production and not replaced by the name Corolla - but this is just pure marketing and sales strategy for Toyota.
I've a 2008 model have it 4 year's 1.4 VVTI engine petrol Great little car doesn't burn oil brilliant on petrol aswell Bought it at 50 kilometres has 93 on the clock now Toyota are built to last go for ever like a good old Casio watch lol 🤟✌️👍
I had one of these. A 1.6 petrol like this. I never got on with it. Also the centre console on mine creaked something stupid and I could never get a comfortable driving position. There was quite a bit of transmission whine in low gears as well. I traded it in after a year and took a financial hit on it. I also found the heater controls too small and fiddly to operate. It drove ok, was quick enough and didn't let me down but it wasnt for me.
That's a great idea - fuel economy on the 1.6 is probably the thing I'm least impressed with on the Auris. So you'll have sorted that out and have a perfect cheap daily 👍
i have the same model but i can feel every bump in the road i don't know if i need to replace something have new tyres on all 4 wheels. car has full service. and always reliable but the vibration coming from the back is getting on my nerves. im trying to figure out if this is normal. it feels very bumpy going from slightly older roads
I've subbed, the only decent Auris review on RU-vid, I'm gunna buy one in white 2011 model, 1 owner from new, 10 service stamps, 79k miles, £5999. This review sealed the deal I think, I have a 2002 1.4 vvti corolla had it 6 years hassle free, 4 advisories from new never failed an MOT, wanted something abit newer with electric mirrors, cruise control, 6 gears and a bit more umph, this car ticks everybox and more, thanks.
Ive had an Auris 1.6 vmatic for the last 15 years, bought it new in 2012 now has 160000 miles on it no issues at all apart from the awful euro made brakes that need replacing every 3 years and that includes the calipers. wish it had the akabono brakes.
Love the content man, got this as my first car last month. Do you know how well the car is 'moddable' to add a uhhh 'roof rack' 🙄. Have you found backseat JJ I misss him. Love the content, get back in the backseat. I LOVE your review. Thank you plase get back to me.
Hey that's a great first car! I don't really know much about modding them, but I'm sure it's moddable :) If it's got those little tabs on the roof where you can fit a roof rack then you should be good Backseat JJ did return in the next video I think, found him wondering along the side of the road haha. Cheers!
6:40 The 1.33 with 90hp? This was not available in the Auris E15, neither in the facelift model like here nor in the previous facelift. The 1.33 had 101 or 99 hp in the facelift.
I wish they had made this auris one model as a sports car somthing like the corolla t sport was with better engine and spec and like the SR 2.2 t180 they should've made a 1.8 or 2.0 petrol with let say 170bhp or so would been great seller.
It's often the case that a vehicle manufacture will glue (doubled sided tape) a different name badge on the same car for different markets. Here in Straaayaa, they still badged it a Kenny Corolla. The one from Japan they glued a "Blade" badge on was a pretty special variant. Good reviews, calm authentic style. keep them coming.
Yes true! It always amuses me to see a Vauxhall Insignia with it's badge fallen off, and the shape of the Opel logo built into the grille underneath. Blade is a cool name. Thanks William, much appreciated 👍
Have one from 2011, a Toyota Auris 1.4 D4D "MMT - Multi Mode Manual Transmission - Semi Automatic", with 140.000 km... The car itself is good, the engine is rock solid, but this car suffers from that lousy/horrible MMT transmission, had 2 dangerous situations with this car both related to the MMT transmission, was cruising at around 80 km/h the car puts me in Neutral for 2 times, automatically switching to Neutral, and had to pull over to switch off and switch on the car, had it serviced to Toyota, they reprogrammed the MMT inductor "this was the first time" second time he did exactely the same, once again, puts in neutral and had to switch off and switch on the car, pissed off, I sent the car again, and this time they said the maintenance was done properly by reprogramming and putting grease on the inductor "this inductor is like a robot, that's why this is a manual car with a robot for the automatic interface", until now, I had no isses with the transmission, will give feedback. The second problem relates to Diesel cars only, the particle filter gets clogged, 1 year ago I asked for a cleaning, it was done and the car was ok, and one year later it has the same problem again.
Another great review, I’m looking forward to buy a first car in a couple months time. It’s either this 1.33 litre Auris or Toyota Yaris mk2 1.4 litre or less I’ve just got a quick question is either a great choice for 17 year old. I like the look of the auris 2007 - 2012 face. Looking to buy first car under £3000 under 80k mileage
They're both good choices, but I imagine you will have to run an insurance quote on both and see what is best. When I was your age I'd have wanted the Auris over the Yaris for the extra size and space, get mates in the back etc :)
The gear stick position is nice but not practical. The handbrake button is hard to use because you have to pull it rather than squeeze it hurts thumb . Suspension is very bouncy too . Mine is the Earlier model 2007 done 115 miles . Made in Turkey
I am going to buy an auris a 2008 one, so i saw this video to have some information about the car. Thanks for the video..it was very helpful.. greetings from Greece..
I have a late 2012 1.8 Toyota Auris Hybrid version. I've had her for almost three years now since 2020. It's far far more fuel efficient than my 2003 1.6 VW Golf. With the Golf, I got 30 cities to 50 mpg on the highway. With my Toyota Hybrid, I get an average of 70 to 99 city and 67 to 80 mpg highway. That's mpg UK. I don't think you can argue with that type of mpg these days. I use the car six days a week. I do about 80 to 130 miles per week, and I only need to fill up once every 4 to 6 weeks. It costs around 55 to 60 to fill up completely.
@@jacksonpeter9628 Hi, sorry for the late reply. All full Hybrids and electric cars are automatic. Just like an electric car mine has drive, reverse, neutral a is and B mode which is a more aggressive regen braking system. Neutral is the only gear/mode I don't use. It's not really advisable to put a hybrid/electric car in neutral at the lights, so I always leave my car in drive with the handbrake on, or in park also with the handbrake on. The only time I use neutral is when I'm putting my car through those car washes that moves you along. I hope this was helpful.
This one is the f/l edition of the 1st generation. It came out in 2010 (feb) at least in Greece. I still have from my dad a 2010 auris 1.33 with just 82.000 km, still seems new one. Do the service once a year... I red, don't remember where, for problems about that motor (1.33). Hope i won' t find any!! Great and different review, good job! A good day to all!!
I think you will be ok with the 1.33! Sure, almost any car there will be problems you can read about. But Toyota make some solid petrol engines, so I think with those low kms it will be OK :) Thank you / ευχαριστώ!
I never knew why they did the name change. Its as if VW replaced Golf with a VW Padminton. Especially in the world we live the last 20 years were brand association and knowledge is key. And Corolla is a name which you associate with build quality and trust.
I have a 2008 1.4tr i only bought it in january ,i paid a lot 4k for it,1 elderly owner and it has a genuine 6400 miles on the clock with 14 main dealer services !,it smells new and drives beautifully it really is concourse condition but i am using it but it is stunning and i love it .
6400?!!!! Or 64000? :) Either way, it's low mileage. I think buying well looked after cars like this is worth the money! So £4k is not bad, we paid similar for a Honda Accord of the same age. Your car will last another 10 years at least, so a great purchase!
@@JJonCars Whats really odd is why someone buys a car new and drives less than 150 miles per year over the last decade and takes it to a main dealer to have it serviced upto its 140,000mile service and does not use it ,cheaper to take taxis but i supposse being in her 80s might explain it sadly she passed away at christmas .
@@jamesmorris155 Yep, I suppose they just want to know the freedom is there if they need it, and it's probably hard to give up driving completely (I know I wouldn't want to). Bless them, they end up making a great bargain car for people
@@JJonCars I was thinking getting one as I think they are quite good looking cars and I love the idea of the gear stick mounted up high its like you're in a van.
I am considering to buy one from 2008/2009. Although nowadays (in The Netherlands) you can only get them with over 150000km. Does the reliability still hold up with such high mileage? Any one has some similar experience? Thanks!
I own a 1.33 petrol auris from 2015. had it for 50k km. its a decent car and the only problem i discoverd is not being able to turn of the tyre perssure light. I would suggest driving a 1.6 tho. de 1.33 is bere langzaam en niet zo zuinig als je zou verwachten.
If you can find one 1.4 VVti buy it even with 150.000km. 1.33 could have some issues but it should be ok. 1.4Vvti takes slight more petrol but it bulletproof even with 200.000 if serviced properly. We have 1.4 for last 12 years and it runs great at 200k.
Very good car indeed. The latest Corolla has very similar exterior look although it has been made lower, longer and wider with a new suspension set up to offer better handling at the price of less headroom and leg room , especially on the rear seats. The Auris is largest in class as interior space and comfort. Avoid 1.33 engine as these are oil burners. Best ones are 1.8 hybrids., actually these are better than second gen Auris.
The new Corolla is a really good car. I had one on holiday and it was an excellent long distance car and very comfortable. But it's definitely not as interesting and quirky or as spacious as this Auris. You're right about the Hybrid version. They still hold their value though!
I drove a diesel auris for 2 years as a company car. I enjoyed the higher seat and better view, also nice modern dashboard and console. I wasn't fan of the hard plastic they used in Auris and Yaris, also the chrome ring on the gear stick will peel off from wear but these are just a minor things. However once I drove older Corolla from 2005 because my Auris went for maintenance so the company gave me a Corolla for a week. During the week in previous model (Corolla 2005) I've noticed a quieter cabin and softer ride which was more comfortable and pleasant than the Auris. Regardless, the Corolla will look outdated compared to the Auris. I never had any issue with the Auris, just do the annual maintenance. It was very solid and reliable.
@@JJonCars it wasn't a huge difference. The Corolla just felt more solid. All modern cars these days are getting lighter because of the new emission rules etc.. But overall I prefer the modern Auris :)
I have the 2011, 1.33 petrol version, bought used. Don't know how the previous owner maintained the car, but mine consumes oil quite allot, like 1 litter per 1000km. I also noticed that it is underpowered when driving up hill or with 4 passengers. I like the interior, the dashboard, the trunk space, but bad luck with the motor. Did any of you had this problem with the oil?

So if anyone sees this in the north of England who has one, please get in touch 😁 hello@jjoncars.com it would be great to try different engines or specifications...

With that kind of mileage, it will be the right choice! It will last you for many years. I know the 1.33 is not the fastest, but it will be a nice car and reliable :)
My mom has a 2008 diesel semi automatic transmission it has problems with the gearbox it goes into neutral sometimes and stays there for a while u have to wait for a while and turn off the car until it decides to go back into gear it’s really annoying cause it happens randomly everything else is fine in the car anyone else have these problems
I actually owned the only unreliable Honda ever made I think 😂 - a 2006 Civic, had every possible common known problem they could have. But the Accord we have is excellent so I'll let them off :)

Avoid is probably a bit of a strong term - I'm sure it's still a great car. Just personally I wouldn't like the lower amount of power on offer - not much fun if you need to overtake or get up to speed on the motorway. Are both your turn signals displaying as normal on your dash? Would like to know if anyone has had this problem and find out what the solution is.
They were definitely working OK on this car (from what I remember!) I found this www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/177017-dash-turn-indicator-light/ might be worth having a read of it - sounds like it could need an LED replacing. I'd be tempted to live with it if your indicators are working and you can hear them though!
@@JJonCars Thanks for that! I watched a video where someone had the same problem as me and they replaced the LED which solved the problem. I will give that a go as I have got the bulbs. Hi sir plz answer my question. Which toyota Auris engine is best for Fuel economy 1.3, 1.4, 1.6 cheep insurance Relaible engine Bcz it would be my first car My budget is max 4000. This would be my first car Your advice will help me lot
Hello. Generally speaking the smaller petrol engines are cheaper to run, maintain and insure. So the 1.33 might be a good idea for a first car (Unless you do a lot of miles, then of course diesel or hybrid could be worth it) £4000 should get you a very nice one. Best thing to do is get some insurance quotes for each engine and see which comes up cheapest (sometimes it can be a surprise which is cheapest)

Hard to say - if it's been looked after, in good condition and good service history etc. Then yes. If it hasn't, then no :) Auris seems a better deal than the Yaris - if they are similar condition!

Haha, wow! Must have been living in a loch for a while 😂 I had a similar experience with an '06 Honda Civic - they are supposed to be extremely reliable cars - but the one I had had every possible common problem they could have, and my local garage said the rear end was basically made of rust. @@JJonCars underneath was rotten I couldn’t believe it on my mechanics lift 😂 shame because it was really nice to drive and with 300NM torque it had plenty of shove however toyota diesels are rubbish on fuel 440miles from 60 litres in both it and an Avensis
I think they are good on both fuel and reliability fronts. If it's the same engine as the later Auris, it can do a lot of miles with just routine servicing 👍
I just looked at one… disappointingly flimsy with thin metal cheapo felt carpets and just felt overinflated sizewise. The previous Corolla was a quality car. It would take a mental leap to put up with the modern cheapness masquerading as “improvement”.
@John Moruzzi I know it's the sound deadening because I took the panels off and I know these cars from the inside. Toyota somehow decided to cheap out on sound deadening for newer cars, even lesser on the newer Auris probably to save on weight or to widen the gap between the Lexus and Toyotas. The "thin" feel you are referring to is just sound deadening. Plastics on the other hand are a different story. Then again, we are talking about Corollas here.
@@ShutterKnack I went into the reception at the Toyota Deeside Engine Plant in about 2008, there was a new Auris on display. It looked and felt so flimsy and naff... not even proper carpets just thin felt imitations. I'm not surprised they ditched the Corolla name... they knew they shouldn't tarnish the solid quality reputation of that brand.
