Toyota Camry 3VZ-FE Timing Belt Setup Marks Explained

This is the proper way to time the 3VZ-FE. It is a bit confusing when reassembling this engines top end because the rear cams and pully don't meet up with the timing marks when properly assembled. Here Dane explains that you have to make the cam gears dots line up first (on both pairs of cams) double dots on rear, single dots on front. The front timing belt pulley should line up like normal to the TDC timing marks on the casing. The rear will not. So after the cams are in place and the dots on the cam gears are together. You have to then rotate the rear timing belt pully to sync with the timing mark on the casing. Also when putting the rear cam pulley on, you must line up the dowel to the 3V dowel hole. Do you happen to know what the cause is when only 3 cylindrs are running on one side of the cylinder head .

This is 2016/2017 and I was goin g to redo my engine without the manual . It's bee n a few years since last removed the heads and did a conditioning of the valves. Not too many of these engines still around I bet but I'll add any tips for future readers.

I just did a timing belt on this engine in a 1993 es300 I don't see a 0 degree marker gauge by the pulley I will check again im in the finishing stages belt is on and car runs but didn't put it all back together. I just lined the crank gear up to mark on engine scared I did it wrong but it runs and all 3 marks are dead nuts after letting engine run 30 - 40 secs.

porkercon thanks! I found it it was caked with grease couldn't even tell it was there haha. It was correct how i had it and car runs and drives fine now. Im kind of a noob at timing belts at first I was trying to match the belt marks back up with the cam and crank lines/dots couldn't figure out why they weren't lining up after manually turning engine over then I was like wow im dumb lol. its actually hard to mess these up on Toyotas.
