How did it run before the repairs, loud and rough? Unfortunately i didn't find this video sooner. Already did the troubleshooting and diagnosing. Had the P0420 last year and kinda bypassed it temporarily, figured that was the culprit. Two days ago it started shaking and running loud on her, poor throttle response ( air/fuel ). OBD provided misfire codes. Checked the spark plugs, they were trashed. Went ahead and took off the manifold expecting to replace it this week. As for the oil consumption, not much I'm willing to do. Toyota put out a " warranty extension " not a recall that I've found, not that I'd bother with it. Piston rings seem to be at the root of it.
Sounds about right. Rule out your spark plugs too before replacing the cat though. It's kind of a tricky code. Randomly rough idle, was kind of shooting in the dark after but got lucky I suppose. Still running strong a yearish later now
I have the same oil burning problem with my camry and my cat isclogged...my fear is if I replace the cat, the excessive oil burning will clog the cat again....I don't want to bother with piston rings, it would cost more than the car is worth
If you guys have toyotas.. I would look into if they have warranty recalls. You may just get lucky and will rebuild/replace for free.... Unfortunately if not, there really is no quick fix to this. This cat replacement was causing misfires due to it being clogged after years of wear. Only true way to fix the oil burning is oversized piston rings unfortunately. Too much for what it's worth imo which is why we just keep dumping oil in as the engine burns it off. If you're having misfires, check the commons first.. i.e. coil packs, spark plugs, air intake leaks somewhere. Thats usually the culprit.
I don’t know why but the two 14mm under my Camry are rusted that cannot grab with any tool, I try heating them up but that also didn’t work. I can’t seem to be able to take them off, any recommendations?
It happens. Got a set of vice grips? If so, try grabbing the head of the bolt with that.. spray them with any penetrating oil first, let soak for a few then wipe clean so you can get a good bite on the head of the bolt. Worst case which this usually happens with exhaust bolts.. cut the head of the bolt off then once you get the cat out, the studs are much easier to turn with vice grips. Turn the studs counter clockwise then clock wise just a hair over and over with vice grips. Very miniscule turns. This breaks up all the seized rust and cleans the threads in the process. If you feel it seizing up while loosening, turn clockwise again and repeat. Wiggling occasionally helps also. This stud method works every time when I work on exhaust components. It's like watching paint dry but it saves you from drilling the broken studs out. Just go easy when turning the studs. Albeit, you'd have to buy two new bolts which you can usually just get from any auto store near for like 5 bucks so no big deal. You could match size, length, thread pattern with bolts you got lying around also to save time/money. Let me know how it works out for you!
Did the check engine code disappear after you replaced the catalytic converter? Also was the car able to passed smock check? Also after you replaced the catalytic converter do you still having the issue of oil consuming? Thanks
The light did indeed go off. It's why we replaced it to pass emissions. Oil burning still resumes unfortunately. This model in particular has a recall for bad piston rings so the owner will be dumping oil in it for the rest of its days. I don't find a reason to dig that deep to install oversized piston rings to tell you the truth. Why kind of issue are you having exactly?
Hello i am having same issues oil consuming i put a qt every 1000 miles and check engine light came on code 0420 it says replace catalytic converter bank 1 already checked and is clogged i am located in CA i heard i do need the original catalyst converter to pass smoke check but i am not willing spending like 1500 dlls for the new one ? Do you think if i install a universal catalyst converter will it pass smock check? Also will it affect the performance on my car ? Will it use more gasoline? Thanks in advance
I don't know how I missed your comment. My apologies.. I'm unsure of your state regulations but as far as I know where I'm at... as long as the engine check light is off, it will pass.. at least in my state.. so I can't say for certain for you. I would imagine even an aftermarket upgrade will serve you well though... but to have zero worries.. just buy OEM. If your cars running rough and/or stalling out / not starting ect.. and you know your cats clogged, then yes; it will definitely run tons smoother (better gas milage, performance, and all ect..) if the cat is replaced. Anyone can loosen some bolts and reinstall. Replacing parts as such is honestly super easy. If you're hesitant, have a friend/family ect.. that is a little more mech inclined to install. You'll be okay my friend.
@@lilianadelgado8841 i just purchased one on ebay. I live in California aswell. When i put it on i had to erase the code and hasn’t come on since I replaced it. I do recommend to purchase an original o2 sensor or at least one that its not cheap. But my gas mileage is way better and my camry doesn’t leave me stranded, 🤞. I did it myself very easy just takes time
Ebay for about 100 bucks. Although I would be careful with ebay atm... they have a pending lawsuit that deals with auto parts... and i recently bought spark plugs over summer myself and they melted bad within two months from there. Been going back to brick and mortar stores since.
