I have own Toyota Landcrusier 120 3.0 Diesel 2005 for almost 5 years now. He has 383000km on clock and is running well. I use Diesel Fuel System Cleaner | Redex in every tank. I used to own Pajero and there was problem with the engine, very common with Pajero. I ask the dealership for Pajero and they said that this problem was not fixed until 2015. I Definitely recommend Toyota Landcrusier 120 3.0 Diesel
I cracked my LC120 piston. I had a high performance tune. I was towing on the day, at high speed (120kmh), for 3 hours, on a 40C day. In hindsight there was no other outcome.
Great description of the potential problems but I think the cracked piston risk is being a little overstated, at least in Australia. The failure rates are very low here and these engines are very popular in the Hilux and Prado and many people do lots of towing in hot weather with these engines. The biggest cause of cracked pistons seems to be over fueling due to worn injectors or bad tunes. Mind you, in Australia you will lose your license on the spot for doing 160km/h and there is only one place you can do 100km/h so high speed driving for long periods doesn’t happen much at all. All up, I wouldn’t let this minor risk put you off the car, just make sure it is not damaged when you get it and replace those injectors probably every 150,000kms.
Frame rust can be prevented. There is a lot good rust protection to be used. I just bought Kline rust protection and finish with Dinitrol 4942 which is used for protection for military vehicles in Europe. Dinitrol 4942 is for the hard offroad use it is special elastic wax basis which stands good against small stones hitting underbody while driving. Anyway it prevents further spread around frame. I think almost every off road SUV have issues with rust after some time. Most of the people when buy new does not protect extra frame and underbody against rust which after some time leads to spread.
Just goes to show that every single car on the road will give you some kind of issues. Its a machine, Toyotas not made of some special material that makes them immune to breaking down. Nothing will stop a car from breaking down if the owner is inept.
the common issues are basically the same on the 150 as on this 120, the 1KD engine issues apply as well, an additonal problem source of the 150 can be that active sway bar feature - KDSS
500k?? Woow nice to hear that. I just bought V6 with 213k. I have notices some minor oil leak on the left bank, it seems valve cover gasket is giving up. Have you already changed yours?
This is why I went for V6. Consumption in city is around 13.5l and on highway 10.5. Anyway parts are pretty cheap in compare to diesel. 215k and runs like charm.plan to keep it next 200k.
@@differentcarreview-dcr I bought V6 15.5k swiss francs for 2005 with 215.000km. Full spec with compass Navigation leather seats. It worths the money. Thr V6 runs around 8sec to 100kmh...it is a beast as they say.
Somehow another 1KD found in other region prove they very potent. In thailand for example. Maybe its different in material used and have some revision from original design and better ecu progamming
Super review. The 1KD-FTV is just a crap engine. Sorry for this word, but this is my opinion. So in the end you end up spending more than if you had driven a reliable, quiet, lasting petrol engine.
I checked the timeline below and I don't seem to see the engine 5L-E haha but imma come back to this comment later on to see how it goes. even then 5L- E is a really reliable engine. Once went to somewhat a 1hour journey which is quite long in my country and somehow the coolant leak due to the cap cracked. The engine survived even without alot of coolant. it was running dry HAHAHA.
My injectors had 320.000 km and where like brand new. Maybe the previous owner did it(bought it with 220.000 km), but I changed them at 320k and sold it at 340k for a 100 serie V8 petrol. Other problems: - Often the turbo leaks oil in this car what can get worse over time - Seats are worn quickly - Engine mounts are vacuum driven and when broken can give an annoing resonance through the car - Wheelbearings are a pain in the *ss to do - Brakepads are worn fast - If the radiatior fails the coolant can mix with the transmission oil which means a new transmission. - Light bulbs of the dash buttons will fail and are quiet expensive (for bulbs) but replaceble with some work Overall loved mine and never had a problem. If there wasn't those annoing diesel emmision taxes etc. I would never get rid of it.
you never had a problem but listed few of them. Is this just theory or reality. I had a 2001 with who knows how many miles in it and run smoothly without complains summer or winter. The only problem I ever had was the automatic transmission (four speed) would get overheated if driven to slowly uphill.
@@gregormenga2166 These are problems i have heard from other owners at Land cruiser club and from Google. Had a problem with vibration on certain speeds. So a lot of searching and differen LC specialists I found it. Almost sold it because it was annoying.
this is amazing. I'd like to know when you mention hot weather what ambient temperatures are we talking about? I find driving below 140 km/h very uncomfortable so 160 would be ideal given the lack of balance of this land cruiser around those speeds.
My whole engine went bang because of this problem but even after 7 years and 110 K miles Toyota gave me a complete new engine, injectors, turbo etc for just the fitting cost. Love my old LC now on 175 K miles
@@kloschuessel773 not by much?? Well much more than the work costs of a simple engine swap. 280k km engine to a brand new makes it atleast here where I live worth so much more. For example a 120 with 400k km is something like €15-17k and 300k km are €20k+. And there is only 100k difference. And yes, I know that a car is more than the engine.
@@radeee87 no it isnt bcs the frame and the rest of the car have more kms on their back Look at prices for cars with swapped engines They arent really worth that much more
People ruin them by adding 2SO to the Diesel fuel. Yes, two-stroke oil, an obstinate mediaeval superstition unsuited to modern high pressure injectors.
Hi i have bought Prado 2006 model with 1KD engine manufactured in 2004. i found that my valve cover had cracks and previous owner fixed it with epoxy instead of replacing for new . can you share some information regarding this part, engine is over 500k KM
EGT gauge will tell you. It has to be installed. A EGT gauge and oil catch can are basic preventive mods. Dunno why diesel doesn't come with it 😑. You got those then nothing to worry about.
That's why it's better to stay away from Toyota Diesel engines and buy Petrol ones, as Toyota Petrol engines are the ones that made the brand popular for its reliability. I'm in Australia and almost all Toyota 4WD new engines (LC, LC Prado, Hilux, Fortuner) are Diesels, so I purchased a FJ cruiser which has the 4 litre petrol engine. The one produced after 2010 is almost trouble free and will most likely see +500k kms.
I have V6 120 year 2005 with 5 gear and full spec including compass in the middle and Navigation. I heard they could have issue with headgasket but I also read that models with 4 gear early production until 2004 could have this issue. I should pressure test my system to see ig any leak. Anyway 215k and running like charm.
Hi, Just bought a 120 with the 173 ps Dieseln engine. Injectors are replaced. Anyhow, we got smoke when accelerating hard (on highway for example). Not if we accelerate normally. Is this a red flag for cracked pistons or injectors or ‚normal‘? THX in advance!
Hi! Thank you for the video, question: is the cracked pistons are for 2004LC120 as well or only 2006 versions? I have as well a 3.0 D4D 120, 2004, with 164,000kms, runs perfectly and made some mods on the suspensions. I am planning to start saving to get new injectors in the future... do you have any reliable link to get genuine injectors? Thank you again for the video :)
the 2004 have a different piston design according to various sources this is a much stronger piston design which is not affected with this particular well known cracking issue But can it crack? Well yes - any piston can crack/get damaged/burnt because of a faulty injector. But the chance that your piston in your 2004 cracks is VERY VERY SMALL (its the same as on other common rail diesel engines which are not known for piston cracks). So don't worry about this issue, just pay attention to the faulty injector symptoms, and to the oil pickup strainer. you can buy genuine injectors directly from Toyota
@@differentcarreview-dcr Thank you for your reply! This made my day :) I will keep paying attention and plan to get new injectors! I really appreciate your content, keep it up! Cheers
because its a Toyota and because you can't really find a better built similar off road car with a proper ladder frame like this, these cars are really really well built, but they can have their own issues
Prado 120 in Europe is around 15-20k euros with average of 200.000km. I have bought mine V6 petrol full spec with 213k for 15k. They are expensive but with A-trac system for offroad and ladder frame excellent choice for off road and also long trips. Weakness is that a frame can rust. Mine have some rust but nothing serious. Protecting that frame and rear axle against rust is good investment. If you want power take V6, consumption is an issue but comparing to diesel it take on average 3 liters more. Diesel is around 11.5 liters and petrol is around 13.5. If you don't make over 10-15k per year take petrol, if you drive over 25 k per year buy diesel. Diesel don't like short trips it kills the engine and petrol have no issues. If you go for V6 then models with 5 gear auto after 2005.
To be honest, Buying a vehicle that never breaks down isn't fun, that's why 1kd engines are loved, because it's fun working on them, opening the hood etc, imagine having a vehicle that never breaks down, there would be nothing to talk about. I Love my 1kd, 450,000km and still going strong
Hold on, let me put on my Burger King paper crown (sorry, “Hungry Jacks” paper crown) in my GX470 (Lexus’ Prado in a Prada ballgown) so I can look down upon the peasants from its lofty 2UZ-FE petrol V8. 395,000km without a single issue. hang on.. ✋🏻👑🤚🏻 ..Ok, I’m ready. Do tell me more about how your engine produces more coal than power.😏
@@ilyamerzlyakov5540 Only problem these engines have are injectors which are not long life product as any other diesel makers in the World. Let's say between 150k and 200k you should change those injectors. Usually lot's of cars have issues past the mark 200k with injectors it is almost every diesel engine produced since 2000.
Thanks for this! I'm currently considering buying one to do some camping with my girlfriend around Australia. Also looking at Mitsubishi Pajero. Do you have any advice on those? The 3.2 T Diesel sounds reliable from what I've heard but Toyota definitely has a better reputation.
Pajero 4 needs timing chain guide change. And sometimes air intake cleaning with EGR. Otherwise its very reliable. I think pajero is much better choice than LC 120. It can still stand against LC 150 in some areas. But if i was in Australia.. i will look for Pajero Sport, sadly it isnt avaible in EU.
lol, i'd stay far away from the Pajero, especially if its the gas variant. I have the LC120 with over 200,000 Kms and it doesnt miss a beat. Super reliable and comfortable off road. Parts for the Toyota are also easier to come by than the Mitsubishi.
@@jordanmcgregor8540 200k is quite low, even a Lada can last 200k with maintenance no problem. For a 4x4 like these, 500k is OK, and at 750k you can say it might be good.
