This is the fourth iteration of the Toyota Prius. Its looks are bolder, its engines are claimed to be more efficient and it’s got more space inside than before.
We take it for a quick first drive to see if Toyota has managed as radical a shakeup of the car as they have of it's looks.
Watch our video then click the link to get access to the full first look report and in-depth lab reviews of hundreds of other cars

The video doesn't mention the extraordinary reliability of the Prius. According to stats on over 1M US trade-ins, the Prius has had the best long term power-train reliability of any compact car. It is also a very safe car. The IIHS (US insurance testers) rate it a top safety pick+ and also give it their highest rating for child seat LATCH attachment.

If it's reliable will be a winner, its modern, it's nicer to drive, its fuel efficient and yes a bit of a ugly side but iPhone 6 was uglier than the iPhone 5s that replaced but with a huge success, remember:)

The price is even more attractive when you consider that it has an auto gearbox. In a regular car you'd pay an extra £1500 for an auto box.

Despite receiving poor press reviews, I thought the (previous) Plug in Prius was quite nice to drive (though IMO having a very shallow boot). But be interesting to see how this compares with the forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq

The ‘regular combustion cars’ is often quoted, and has me curious. I wonder if these are automatic transmission, and of a comparable size. In general , if the conditions are matched, then it might be possible to say, that an ICE vehicle can compete with the Prius for economy, when the ICE vehicle is in its best possible situation, and the Prius is in its worst. Overall, the Prius will come out on top. Then, what happens when you get to 100k miles or more, is another matter. A simple auto gearbox repair is £1500. A bad one is £2500 or worse, depending on the brand and where you go. This easily equals the ‘battery replacement’ issue often thrown at the Prius, because Prii usually don’t suffer from auto transmission problems, til 250k miles or 400k miles if well-maintained. Good review though, and relevant for us pre-owned market buyers still.

I drive a vw cc dsg 2013, I got this car as a replacement vehicle as my car was hit from behind. This car is very ugly to look at specially the back but i must say i get about 68mpg mixture of highway and local (London) and i drive quite rough and the drive is not bad. The more i hate this car the more i like it. Choice is yours, Hate It or Hate It

A review about a prius without any commentary on real live MPG - what exactly was the point?
@which
@which 8 лет назад
+Rob Elsey Hi Rob, we are one of the only organisations that test real world MPG in a lab condition. We have deigned our own tests that allow us to accurately predict what cars will get in real life, but we can also repeat the test exactly the same for every car which makes our testing unique. To keep independent we buy all the cars we test in this way so unfortunately we have to wait until the car is available to use before we can get it in the lab rather than just reading off the dashboard on a manufacturer organised test in Spain.

+Which? I saw 6 litres on the dash. Not bad for a car of this size. And the best color for the Prius is the one that you test drove. What's the name of that color? Any code name? I think the new Prius front is nice but the rear not quite. Must see for myself how it looks.

Why does people still try to see a Japanese brand making cars with European style?? Does a Honda Civic looks like a Golf to anybody?? Does a Prius look like anything in Europe??Juke... Do I have to continue?

That shiny white drinks holder is dreadful, makes the car look cheap. I cannot understand why they did that; a dark matt non-slippery finish would have been far smarter.

Trust me it's only show and not much anything else. Just like any other Hyundai products.

PRIUS = OLD TECH:( I have a 2014 Chevy Volt I bought new for $22,195 after $9,500 off for tax credit and state rebate. I have 49,000 miles on it in about two years. I have a lifetime gas mileage of 105 mpg. Last month Onstar sent a monthly report on all the cars systems and reported I drove 1,913 miles and averaged 231 mpg. Can a Prius get 231 mpg after driving 1,913 miles? Think not! The new Volt is even better. 0-60 in 7.7 (Prius is about 10 seconds). The Volt kills most cars off the line with 279 lbs of torque at zero rpm. Imagine having full engine torque at every light. Needless to say the Volt is very fun. If you drive less than the battery range, 53 miles, and drive that distance every day for a year you will get 2,418 mpg. The Volt automatically burns one tank of gas per year to keep it fresh (8 gal). Remember you never have to charge the Volt if you choose not to. The Prius is lame and Toyota needs to copy American Volt technology and claim it as their own.

GM will not be selling the current volt outside of the USA, as the last one pretty much bombed- not really to do with the technology, just poor advertising-lack of dealership training (salesmen never really pushed it as an option....they did'nt really know how it worked). It also was'nt overly practical... not enough rear seating positions... They tried to push it out as a company car... but for the same price, company fleets went for something more established.... If they put the voltec tech into a zafira tourer however, they'd sell a bucketload of them (as quite a lot of them are used for short journeys on the school run), however, GM do not seem to have many 'switched on' people within their product strategy department(or whatever you would call it)... Toyota have done so well with it so far, (and mitsubushi with the outlander phev) mainly due to the cars being relatively practical- and well publicised...
@voltecrules624
@voltecrules624 8 лет назад
+Iain Ansell The Volt, like all electric cars, are not sales leaders, making up about 1% of all cars sold. Unlike most electric cars the Volt has no range anxiety since it can operate on gasoline. The beauty of the Volt is it goes 53 miles on a single charge, which is more than the average daily commute for 80% of drivers. That means 80% will not use hardly any gas, and very rarely go to a gas station. Maybe once a year. It's true Chevy doesn't push the Volt. It's because I bought mine for $22,195 new after rebates, and if you look at the service requirements for the Volt there isn't much there. The car is a tank and never needs any service except to change the oil every two years and rotate tires. No money for Chevy in their service dept. I researched sales for green cars. The only green car out selling the Volt, is tesla. Volt doubles the third place Ford Fusion. The new 2016 Volt seats 5, is fast, fun, and reliable.
