You get a Prius for economy and reliability. Car fetishist whiners don't seem to get that most adults just want a car to get from point A to point B safely and economically, not to go drag racing.
@hybrid32494
@hybrid32494 5 лет назад
hello, YES!!!. It seems all the car marketing is mainly aimed at sporty fast driving lately, and since the prius never fit into that demographic, many of the BMW/BENZ/AUDI lovers like to hate on the prius. This is because they have no ability to examine what certain cars are meant for and how they achieve their goals. They consume what the marketers tell them, with zero research. Guess what, the other day a guy told me that the impact of my prius on the environment is worse than a HUMMER, yes he said that a TESLA is the way to go, ahahahhaha. Of course he was talking about the fact that batteries in hybrids ruin the environment, and yet that doesn't happen in a TESLA.

Nothing safe or reliable about this car. Do not need a drag racer to get from point a to b reliable. But a 4 cylinder chevy Malibu turbo gets as good of mileage, more comfy, larger, cheaper, better reliable, cost less. hey man!! thanks for watching and this comment. I;ve had my 2007 prius (not the one in this video) since 2009, and have not even replaced the original brake pads, car is fine. It's had some warranty enhancement services for free too from Toyota. I did the math and the car has been earning me money since 2 years ago based on the fuel savings over the time alone. Meaning it's been a free car compared to any other 4 cyl gas car. Basically the only non vintage collectible car that can pay for itself in fuel savings alone (other than collectability value for old cars).

We purchased a similar 2008 Prius (same color, no Navigation system) in November of 2007. It has 180,000+ miles and other than regular maintenance we have replaced 1 headlight, the starter battery, tires (2 sets) since we purchased it. The best mileage we have had was 55 mpg during a vacation trip in 2009. We drove from Minnesota to Virginia, Washington DC, the Basketball, Baseball and Football Halls of Fame (multiple Halls of Fame thanks to my wife) and back to Minnesota. The trip was over 5000 miles and we spent $205 on gas. We generally get between 45-50 mpg in the summer and 40 mpg in the winter (when it can get really cold for long periods of time). To say we love this car is an understatement, even more so now that we are retired (I still do 4 hours a day of online IT support). Hopefully this car will last until we give-up our drivers licenses or die.

hey!! thanks so much for this great comment!, I was just driving my own prius, and I can confirm it's still the best car there is, in terms of fuel economy and reliability. and it's quite large inside and convenient. Recently I'm getting around 55-60 MPG with the AC on. BTW, check out the Prius V in the future, its also terrific, much bigger than this model and rides much smoother, and pretty similar fuel economy.

sweetdragon36067 176k miles is considered low mileage for a Prius. Regenerative brakes that last 3 times as long, Atkinson cycle engine that rarely runs, built in Japan by non slob Americans(I’m an American, but please argue this isn’t the sad truth). It’s a recipe for a bulletproof tank of a car.

@@nordicpride9708 my son and I are looking at the second gen Prius for his first car that he will be pretty much choosing for himself, is it really that good? I've never owned one, but really like the idea, and of course the Toyota name is legendary. The fuel economy alone gets him super excited. We will have to be buying one with some miles on it, of course, are there any drawbacks we should avoid?
@nordicpride9708
@nordicpride9708 4 года назад
Plen122 The second gen Prius really is a tank. Toyota got it right with this second iteration. You don’t have the head gasket issues of the 3rd gen, and the hybrid battery packs tend to last for quite some time. With that said here are some things to look at when buying a 2nd gen Pri. 1. Was the hybrid battery pack replaced? These can fail. New Prius batteries.com makes a new replacement for piece of mind and ease of install. 2. Does it use a lot of oil? PCV valves don’t last forever, but if the engine is run low on oil or otherwise abused they can burn quite a bit between oil changes. 3. Does it have any pending check engine lights/codes? You will want to drive it 3 cycles, and bring a scanner if possible. See how fast the hybrid battery charges and discharges. Now for some maintenance recommendations : 1. Change the inverter pump with a new OEM Toyota unit for piece of mind. Easy DIY job. 2. Replace the 12 volt battery. If these are older they can give all sorts of sporadic electrical issues that will drive you crazy. 3. Change transmission fluid. This is a E-CVT (essentially a planetary gear box). But it still has bearings that like fresh fluid. Easy DIY 4. Change spark plugs and clean MAF sensor. Only use DENSO plugs. 5. Check front wheel bearings for wear and unusual noise. Common in Prius. 6. Enjoy it. These are one of the most reliable cars on the road. But like anything they have their issues. If you address the known issues it should provide a lot of trouble free driving for your son. Best wishes

@@tom-iv6lc There is an electric coolant pump for the Hybrid system $65 at a parts store., and one for the engine coolant $300 at a parts store. Not a common fail item at all., also a belt driven mechanical pump $50 at parts store. . The electric pump comes on when the engine is not running to circulate coolant while driving in EV mode or sitting at a traffic light so you don't loose your heat. It manages all that seamlessly. @@tom-iv6lc My 2008 UK Tspirit's water pump failed at 99k miles. It rattled intermittently for 3 weeks before I drove it in for a replacement. And that's been my only failure! I have only 122k on the clock, but it's my daily commuter (34 miles a day return trip). Everything else works flawlessly. Mine has the voice command capability, so I can literally press a button on the steering and give the vehicle voice commands - and it responds in perfect english. Useful for SATNAV commands too. There's about 4 A4 sheets worth of voice commands for the vehicle, if you can be bothered to learn them all - I know only a few handy ones. Available, apparently, only on the models with built in navigation, methinks.

Great video, it points out almost everything I love about this car. I would just add some more things: The speedometer, placed in far front (it actually uses a clever mirror relection so it appears even further ahead). You can look at it without taking your eyes of the road, you do not even have to refocus. In the 3rd gen they moved it more to the center, which I think was a mistake. The armrests just naturally force you to keep your hands on the steering wheel. The minimalistic dashboard - there is nothing to distract you from the traffic. And the touchscreen display that allows you to control everything in one place, very easy to learn and get used to. I bought this car as a used one, 4 years old from a lease company, so it was very well maintained. It is eleven years old now. It has never let me down. I only had to replace one front wheel bearing (it's protective cover was damaged) and I had the auxiliary 12v battery replaced twice. Not the big hybrid battery, that is still the original. But even with the failing 12v battery I was able to start the car and drive it to the repair shop on my own, this is just another example how reliable these cars are. Before the Prius I drove some other cars provided by my employer. I never liked driving at that time, it was to much stress for me and I was afraid of driving in our capital or any other bigger city. Buying my own Prius changed all that. It is so easy to drive, so reliable. It starts everytime. It responds immediately. Stoping and continuing to drive in a steep uphill is not a problem for me any more. Same for driving in heavy traffic in the city, not a stress any more. It just lets you focus on driving and does everything for you. I truly love using that car, feels so relaxing with everything under control.

It was a great deal. I love the car. Not many are mentioning what you can haul though. I originally wanted a truck because it's hard to get supplies from Lowes home or stuff purchased off Craigslist. Well the Prius can be your truck! I was able to easily load 30 bags of bark dust in the back with seats down. I have also hauled a few 8 foot two by fours that went between seats almost to dashboard. And was able to fit a rebounder easily in the back. In our other car we would of had to strap it to the top. My only issue is a hesitation when taking off after stopping at a light especially when it's raining. I do LOVE the gas mileage and challenge myself to drive in a way to increase it when I am on long trips.

And saved hundreds if not thousands doing it myself. We really do hope to get at least another five years out of this vehicle. It has saved us so much money in gas it's amazing. Now, with 83,000 miles on it, I couldn’t have asked for a more appropriate and reliable car! Very comfortable and spacious. While not a speed demon, it adequately meets my needs during the interstate portion of my commute. I just learned what the “B” selection on the gear selector is. It should recharge the battery with less use of the gas engine, as well as extend brake life. In short, it’s a great comfortable car, with lots of interior space, and has proven to be reliable! I can even manage to get over 60 on a warm day in steady driving. If you think about it, your prius is basically paying for itself, in terms of fuel savings if you were to drive a more common 4 cylinder corolla or civic lets say. BTW don't use the "B" mode much it could put alot of extra stress on the generator, plus it's just built in glorified braking, you know. You will still need to hit the throttle to get your cruising speed back, so your overall energy consumption is about the same, in terms of kinetic being turned into potential (battery charge).

I have an 04 prius. It's one of the first 2nd gen units; it doesn't even have a rear window wiper (which by the way isn't needed). I bought it in 2010 with 82k miles. I now have 185k and the hybrid battery is still good. I get on average around 48 mpg. Even more important than the fuel economy, the car is super reliable with minimal maintenance. It's the lowest cost of ownership for any car I've owned and I've owned a number. The other plus is the cargo capacity. When you drop the rear seats you can haul quite a bit. I think 04 to 09 prii are the best value in cheap used cars.

@Sue Ellen McGoey The 2nd Generation Prius was made from 2003 to 2009; a few might have registrations reflecting 2010 (UK anyway) but otherwise, no Gen 2''s were made in 2012. I strongly suspect that if you have a 2012 Prius, it's actually a 3rd Generation Model. How to tell for sure? Does the dashboard have a centre section filled with instrumentation that stretches from the dashboard down between the two front seats making it impossible to move easily between the two front seats? That's a Gen III. The Gen 2 dashboard is designed so that there's a large space between the dashboard and the centre console, allowing you to theoretically enter through the passenger front door and cross over to the driver's seat without too much trouble if you're limber enough! You literally don't have to lift your feet over anything - and as a result the Gen II front cockpit seems a great deal more spacious.

Swayed by Consumer Reports and knowing that the Prius was being used in taxi service in NYC, I bought a 2007 with 60,000+ miles as a "certified" car from a Toytota dealer. We immediately started enjoying gas mileage around 50mpg and figured on driving it 200,000 miles or more. I was never notified that Toyota discovered two problems for which they offered extended warranties: (1) failing dash panel instrument cluster (2) ABS brake module failure. Both are extraordinarily expensive to fix. Had I known about these failures, I'd have sold my car before the extended warranties expired. Needless to say, I had the VERY BAD LUCK to have both of these failures AFTER the extended warranties expired. There was a get-around for the instrument cluster failure (disconnecting the 12V power to allow the computer to reset) but eventually it grew so troublesome in the winter that I had a local mechanic install a used cluster. Even that cost about $1000 because of the extensive dis-assembly required. Then last summer, with 145,000 miles and after replacing the 12V battery (a pain), ABS warning lights came on and the car became completely unsafe to drive. Independent mechanics could not fix this problem or even install a used ABS module because of their inability to deal with the car's computer software. The quoted repair price from a Toyota dealer was $3500. I wrote to Toyota customer service asking for consideration in making the brake repair since I think that they should have recalled the Prius for this safety issue. They refused any kind of help. All the good words about the legendary reliability of the Prius have proven to be a wishful dream!

hey man!! sorry to hear you had so much trouble with your prius. I have a 2007 model and have had the ABS brake pump replaced for free under the extended warranty. I have also had rare issues with the dash going out, and you're right disconnecting the 12V battery will temporarily solve it. I got to say that your purchased a seemingly low mileage car for a 2007 model year. There was a high probability it was a bad dealer from the start. I've seen these go 300K and no issues at all.

When you add a GromAudio VLine2 unit to 2nd gen Prius (w/ Nav), this adds CarPlay and more to my Prius extending the functionality. I was able to use Roku stick with this unit meaning that I can watch Netflix or Prime Video on my screen. I can also add RU-vid video as App to the Grom and watch video. It took 2 hours to install without any splicing. It has custom harness. I was able to pair a wireless keyboard with the VLine so that I can type in searches on the RU-vid app faster than the online keyboard. VLine2 unit only works on 2nd gen Prius that has a NAV unit. That is because the custom harness was made for that Prius trim. The VLine unit allows for a mouse via USB port. I use HDMI input port and the 2nd USB port for my Roku stick. It has HDMI output port for backseat headrest monitors. The VLiine unit can cast to smart monitors if you can have smart TV/monitor. It allows for a front or rear camera using a Grom accessory harness. I don’t know if it would work for a side camera. This was the best update for 2nd gen Prius using the existing Prius hardware.

I’m an original owner of a 2008 with 156k and my avg mpg is 45 (w original traction battery and non-eco tires). I would not expect to exceed this mpg in a car of this age with the original battery unless hyper-miling, especially running ac. Overall, love the car. Main complaints are: super over bearing traction control, hvac fresh air / recirculate function that resets at startup, inadequate headlight output, bluetooth smartkey that sometimes doesn’t connect, radio volume knob that sometimes doesn’t function, complicated cooling system that makes for difficult coolant change, sloped windshield that allows a ton of heat gain and might as well be a sunroof, classic jap car problem of not accommodating taller drivers. Love the storage capacity, utility and bulletproof all electric powered ac. Easy to change oil. Cheap and available parts. Shares many parts with Corolla. Too bad so many people hate on this car. But good for keeping used prices low. It is an engineering marvel.

Was going to buy another truck but already had enough (again, the accounting guy said so!). Feds & State had RIDICULOUS tax credits- $7500 Fed, $5000 State, so I was “told” to buy a hybrid. Went to Toy dealer and said “gimme a Prius” and walked out with a 5-model. Right of the bat I couldn’t believe how comfortable it was and the heated seats were cooking me within seconds. It’s when I started “shaking” the rear view mirror with the JBL stereo I realized there was something “going on” with this thing. After getting used to the motor shutting off all the time and seeing 45-50 mpg I was really starting to get impressed. Next thing I knew, I was grabbing the Prius fob instead of my overpriced Lexus or any other cars and trucks I had. Plus I drive IT in the snow WAY more than any of my four wheel drives. It’s great in snow and dirt roads as well. Ironically, my friend had one too and he actually can fit his stand up jet-ski IN THE TRUNK! He gets 47 mpg to the lake/river, launches out the back of the Prius and loads it back in from the water. The looks on people’s faces when he’s backing the Prius down the boat ramps is hilarious too!! All purpose vehicle!!

Hey man!! best car ever, totally agree. I personally dot think that other than the pure aesthetics this prius has any worse features than a typical 3 series that gets at best 24 MPG combined. hybrid32494 Go on amazon. Buy the A1 Auto bearings, factory axle nuts and do the job yourself. I just did in my 08. Thing is SILENT now! Mpg increased as well. Just remember one thing. You MUST properly torque the bearings or they WILL fail! This is a very common mistake guys make. Also stake the nuts like OEM.

I’ve owned this exact car, some know issues your definitely going to have, 1. The rear trunk handle will break off eventually, the clips are weak holding it on and they fail over time $600. Two the speedometer on this model is digital and faulty, it will fail over time $800. The catalytic converter‘s are sometimes an issue on this model and will fail early sometimes under warranty $1300. Other then that this is a fantastic car, and once you replace these known issues it is a life long car✨ I now own a 2013 Prius performance plus package 🔥🔥🔥✨💎

Balazs Csipai I’m sure you can, there’s always cheaper methods if you search for them, you can go to a pick and pull, you can get an unpainted handle for way less, I’m only mentioning the prices I was quoted by multiple mechanics not including the dealership. I just letting people know what to expect if there not as resourceful or as you. Also depends greatly on where you live. I lived in the SF Bay Area which is one of the most expensive places to live in the country: none of my work is done at the dealership. Not to mention I have a friend that works for Toyota as a mechanic so I pay a quarter of the price anyhow. ✌🏾

You know the one thing I have never understood about people that have a Prius. A real question for owners. Why dont you EVER tint your car windows??!! All that glass, heating up the car. I have never sen 1 Prius with tinted windows, EVER. And I am in south Fla! It is hot as hell here. My car is so darkly tinted, I can barely see out of it:). The tint helps the A/C work better and the fabric is in perfect condition,and you aren't on display as you drive. But as a Prius goes by, (slowly), no tint! With that huge glass hatch alone, letting all that sun in. Eating away at the fabric, heating up the interior of the car, no privacy at all. Why don't you Prius owners tint your windows? It would save on that precious energy, makes the A/C works better, the car look better. In HOT states, like Fla. or Texas or Arizona...why no tint?? An honest question. *** If the fabric in these cars doesn't hold up well, get tint!!

I’m not a fan of Toyota’s, but if I had to own one I’d probably go with the Prius. I currently have a VW TDI wagon though and absolutely love it. I’m not an economical driver by any means, but I’m still averaging right around 40 MPG, 45+ if I put in some effort.
@hybrid32494
@hybrid32494 5 лет назад
hey man!! No matter what we drive, lets keep getting those high MPGs. Only issue with the diesels are not many diesel station in my area (NYC) and diesel itself seems to cost about 20% more than gasoline (so your efficiency per dollar of fuel is very diminished right away). Plus the TDI wagon you have is pretty rare, I'm sure you would agree. BTW the Toyota hybrid tech has been around in JAPAN since 1990, and was a city test vehicle there until 2000, when it first came to the USA, very proven tech.
@gratigo1
@gratigo1 5 лет назад
hybrid32494 I’m in Oregon and diesel is only about 10¢ more per gallon that regular so it’s pretty equal. The range is exceptional, I got 650 miles on my last tank (I am not a very efficient driver btw). I admire the Prius, but I’m a die hard VW enthusiast. I just love the solid feel of German cars but I know it’s not for everyone. And my wagon is pretty rare as it’s a MK4 ALH 5-speed, but the newer (2010+) wagons are pretty common and the market is pretty flooded right now so they’re really affordable at the moment
