Toyota Rav4 - Platform Bed - KEEP THE SEATS

Here is a video where I show the platform bed I built for my 2011 Toyota Rav4. The difference for this bed vs other builds I`ve seen, is that I retain my rear passenger seats. The platform bed is raised up enough that when I park level, the bed is level. Hopefully you feel inspired to build your own platform bed.
Measurements:
Rear Section: 42 - 3/4" x 31 - 1/2"
Middle Section: 42 - 3/4" x 30"
Head piece Section: 42 - 3/4" x 9" (drivers side) x 17" (passenger side)
All platform sections were made with 3/4" plywood
All pieces have been carpeted with interior carpet from Canadian Tire, glued down with contact cement, and stapled.

This was super helpful! I used it as a guide for my own build. For anyone else interested in trying something similar, the dimensions ended up being: Plywood: 42.75 X 31.5, 42.75 X 30, 26 X 16.5 (I did not extend the front panel all the way across behind the driver's seat) 2X4s: The sideways 2X4 supports are 42 inches long. You could even go a little shorter on the rear one to make sure it doesn't rub the sides. The length of the front one isn't nearly as important because the car is wider up there. The two rearmost 2X4 supports are 28.5 inches long. Again, they could be a little shorter. Mine do rub the back door if I don't place them carefully while setting up. I didn't attach the 2X4 to the middle panel. It's very stable just resting on it.

I am truly loving these creative ways to add a bed to a car. It seems like there is a whole another world of travelling out there that I didn't know about until I bought my Kia Soul. Thanks for uploading.

I knew I should've thoroughly searched my recent video queries. I kinda now regret doing so, ..now that I already moved the seats but was probably better off KEEPING the seats installed. I'm banging my head now wondering how I overlooked such a simple configuration such as yours. But I'm glad I came across it anyway. I'm going to go on my first winter and longest test run in a day or two with my current setup (without the rear two seats) but may just in fact reconsider the layout once I reach my destination and remodel it to something just like the way you have it here. I seriously can't believe I haven't thought of something this simple. Lol, thanks for sharing such a terrific idea.

Leaving the rear seats in was a revelation, as the latches on the back of mine are rusted solid - it was my sister's vehicle, and she never removed them for 15 years. I was about to destroy the seats to get them out, just so I could lay a mattress on the floor like I did in my many Chev Astro and GMC Safari vans. They got around 15-16 mpg, which worked way back when, but not now. Anyway, the 2001 FWD RAV4 has over 222,000 miles and still runs like a top (Castrol Magnatec oil) and looks good doing it - in spite of Wisconsin winter road salt. I have decided that there is adequate headroom with a raised platform, and I guess the storage beneath is worthwhile, since there's not 4 feet between wheel wells like the vans had - I used the space before and after the wheel wells for storage in them. Now that I'm retired and have the time, I might take up fishing - always liked Nature. A small trailer behind for my trusty 1978 XS1100 motorcycle, and I'm adventure bound! I see that you had a net suspended from the ceiling - more storage? Don't think I have need of a closet rod though. I'm still considering privacy curtains on the rear windows, and maybe some kind of a curtain just behind the front seats - open while driving, of course. I'm liking the idea of a PVC pipe frame to support the bed surface - light and easy to construct sub-assemblies for take-down and storage - maybe 1.5 or 2 inch - be nice to find corner fittings like they have for 1/2" PVC. Great video - very helpful! Thank you!
@explinimal7
@explinimal7 7 лет назад
You're welcome! I'm glad you found some inspiration to build your own platform bed. The net is for tossing things up there for easy access, like my pjs during the day, along with my reflectix, and a change of clothes for in the morning, so I don't have to go digging around. I have a tendency to misplace things I just had in my hand, even in small spaces, go figure. The '78 XS1100 is a trustworthy companion when adventuring. Good luck on your build, and adventure!

You're welcome. If its just 2 people that will be using the vehicle for camping, it makes much more sense to take out the rear seats for the added storage, but I use my car daily, and often carry passengers in the rear, so I went with this configuration. Its super quick to set up, which I love.

I'm seriously considering doing something similar to yours but contemplating whether a hinge system is possible where I am able to easily unfold the entire wooden unit and just as easily, inconspicuously, and quickly refold it back to the rear trunk area when not in use for added convenience. I got this hinge idea from Jed's channel, +IntoTheMystery13 wherein he hinged his wooden board together to make them foldable so he is able to reach in for stuff tucked underneath his permanent bed. Now taking notes from your sweet setup as well as his hinge idea, the whole 'Fold N Forget' concept is really appealing.
@explinimal7
@explinimal7 7 лет назад
Thanks for your comment. I had lots of fun making this. and I hope you are able to come up with a design that will work for you. I thought about using hinges too, but I like flexibility of not having all the pieces in more of a fixed position. Although I haven't measured it, I think with my set up, the middle section would have conflict with the roof when trying to fold it back. Maybe you could find a solution to this. If you do, please share.

@explinimal7
@explinimal7 6 лет назад
I used 3/4" plywood. for the main base, it's supported quite well on the 3 sides, but I did cut a 2x4 for added support in the middle right at the back gate, although I haven't had to use it. The carpeting is from Canadian Tire (I'm in Canada). It's a simple automotive interior carpeting that I glued down with a generous amount of contact cement and staples.

What is the length from the back of the drivers seat to the rear when then platform is all in place? Also is your driver seat always in your driving position or did you have to push it forward?
@explinimal7
@explinimal7 4 года назад
When the platform is in place, the length is about 74" from the back of the passenger seat to the rear door when it's pushed as far forward as possible. My driver seat remains in the driving position and is about 66" from the back to the rear door.
@larryx4684
@larryx4684 5 лет назад
Very clever. A couple of questions for clarity: 1 - what does the head piece rest on where it is adjacent to the front seats, ie what keeps it level with the middle section? 2- does the middle section have the same # of 2*4s (for height) as the main section or does it taper down with one less 2*4 or ? Thanks
@explinimal7
@explinimal7 5 лет назад
Hey Larry, the head piece mainly rests on the 2X4 lip of the middle section, then has one leg section that goes to the floor. It provides enough stability. For point 2, in order to lay level, the height at the back door is 5 2x4s thick, 4 2x4s thick at the front part of the cargo section, where the seats pivot, and only 1 2x4 is used across the back of the seats, just below the headrest. This provides the lip for the head piece to sit on. Good luck if you build this.

Are you able to access your trunk compartment under rear floor?
@explinimal7
@explinimal7 5 лет назад
All I keep in my trunk area is 'In case of emergency' stuff, I never use it for storage. For this reason, I don't mind that the rear section doesn't allow me regular access to the trunk area. If this is important to you, perhaps you could build the rear supports to the side of the access area and only have a stack of 4 2x4s at the front of the cargo area.

What year RAV4 and are the seats needed to be moved forward or can you drive with two people comfortably with that setup. Also how long and wide is it?
@explinimal7
@explinimal7 5 лет назад
Hi Jesse, It's a 2011 Rav4. I built 2 head pieces, one that requires both seats to be all the way forward, not allowing for passengers to sit in any of them, and another (in the video) where I only have to move the passenger seat all the way forward. It wouldn't be comfortable for the passenger though. I should mention that if I don't fasten the head section to the mid section, I am able to lift the lip of the head piece on top of the mid section, allowing the passenger seat to come back a little bit allowing for a much more comfortable ride. The width is 42.5" and the length is 74" behind the passenger seat, 66" behind the drivers seat.

I saw a video by a person called Mason and he had a piece of mesh screen cut to the size of his back window. He sealed it with painter tape as he said it doesn't leave marks.
@explinimal7
@explinimal7 6 лет назад
I have picked up screen material. On the Rav, there is some exposed metal, so I was thinking of cutting the screen to size and sew in some pockets for magnets that would magnetize to the metal. The bottom is the only issue, I'll have to figure out something. Fortunately we have had a very dry hot summer, so the mosquitoes have been relatively non-existent.

Have you figured out a way to access the subfloor cargo?
@explinimal7
@explinimal7 5 лет назад
Hey Kevin, I normally only use the subfloor area for emergency gear and things that I don't use on a day to day basis. With that in mind, it wasn't important for me to access the cargo area with the bed in place (I also have the rubber mat that limits access with the base on top anyhow). If I need to access the cargo area, I just make sure everything is off the platform and lift it up. So far, I haven't needed to gain access to that area.
