Toyota Rear Main Oil Seal Replacement 

I am in Sweden and for me its funny because of the name FelPro...the word "fel" in swedish means wrong or mistake !! Good name for that gasket and seal. Very clear video, thanks.

Make sure the surface around that disk the seal slides over is super clean. Most of the time the grime he cleaned off in the beginning is what works its way in between the surface, adheres to it and eats the inside of the seal. Same with pinion seals. Sometimes little leaks at the top can also trickle down and pool in these areas and create that grime and premature wear on these big seals. richpin is the man!

Thanks. This will help me install one on my wife's Solara. It had a retaining plate and I wasn't sure if it needed to come off. The name "retaining plate" certainly seems to imply that.

After installing my seal I noticed that it still leaks. I got the seal form autozone here in California and it fits but I noticed it went in rather easy. I thought there should be some pressure and it would be tight when I installed it. Also when I put it into the seal retainer I used the old seal to push it in but it went all the way in past the edge of the retainer. I'm trying to figure out what I did wrong any suggestion? Thank you!

This is going to be helpful. It would be nice for future videos if you show the location of the bolts and such. ( you show the bolts, but there is no reference to what side of the engine your on. So starting back further so we can see what part your looking down into would be most helpful)... Thanks again for the awesome videos..

....good video, thanks.....may I suggest buying a seal from a bearing and seal shop, they can get you a seal using the inner, outer and depth measurement of your original seal, save a lot of money, 50 dollars is the usual dealer rip-off.....!

Thanks man I just changed a back seal on my 1996 Toyota corolla and it started leaking worst than before it got me wondering what did I do wrong now I know it was because I put it in without even removing the carrier and I just gave it two taps and taught that would do it so I'm buying a new seal and do it just the waybu showed us to I'm sure it wil work this time

Thanks, that was what I was gathering by reading some other sites. I don't have a lift, so I guess this is going to be a lot of run... I was really hoping I could just disconnect the transmissions and push it away from the engine a little and have enough room without actually removing it.

Better than a screwdriver is a metal paint can opener. It's like a screwdriver with a 90 degree bend at the tip and rounded at the bend/curve. Does not accidentally scratch the metal surrounding the seal that way.

I have not replaced front wheel bearings on the tercel.From what i see in the repair book the seal on the engine side of the knuckle is flush with the spring towards the inside.

To remove the seal you can also use a machine screw and drill a hole in the seal then thread the machine screw in... it will bottom out on the back lip of the seal housing and then as you continue screwing it down it will lift the seal right out ... since the back lip of the housing isn't the sealing surface it doesn't do any harm to future sealing.

You do not have to drop the transmission on the manual which makes the job so much easier.

Rear main seals are behind the flywheel so the transmission will have to be removed.I would recommend getting a repair book ahead of time.

I have a 2007 Yaris with 225,000 that just developed a rear main leak...I think I assume it’s a rear main leak given there’s oil dripping out where the engine and trans bolt up Is the procedure you prescribe here similar to the Tercel procedure? Thanks

I have a '96 tercel. They're great little cars and easy on gas.

That blue gasket looks like the one for the 22R series engines.

I used permatex high temp red rtv with good success.

Aren’t you supposed to use the black rtv since thats an area with lots of heat and oil?

The only ones i have used were for the cooling system and all they did was slow the leak down and plugged up the heater core.

Have a '01 Caravan (3.3Flex) with the A604. It appears I either have an oil pan leak, or the rear main seal. If I'm going to change the rear seal, I'm going to go ahead and do the pan at the same time. Do I need to drop the transmission to get the seal out? And if I do have to pull the transmisson, any suggestions or hints? I've done the solenoid pack and filter/pan gasket on the A604 which was a lot easier then I thought it was going to be. Thanks in adv.

Clean all the area were you think the leak is coming from then you can see it more clearly.If that does not work for you they make leak detectors that go into the oil.

I think mines is leaking oil too Mr pinaro i have an 1996 mercury grand marquis gs. And my engine is making a noise and i found out there's no oil in my car. Can i put the bar leaks until i get the money to fix it

All that silicon inside the engine - almost certainly will have blobs of it blocking oil passageways and killing the engine. Do Not use so much, just a tiny amount to coat the surface. Everything other than that smear either hangs out the outside, or guess what, hangs on the inside!

hi richping i have a 1991 1.5 toyota tercel it has no spark ive changed the igniter and it would not start then the whole distributor and it started i took it for a test drive and it died after arround ten mines same sympton no spark ???
