This 2021 Toyota Tacoma has a litany of strange electrical issues. After posting about some on my social media many of you wanted a video detailing these problems. The first half of this video is problems that I brought up to the Toyota dealer but the second half is just my opinion on the truck so far. After a lot of research I have discovered that ALL of the issues I bring up are common Toyota Tacoma problems so I have no reason to believe this truck is a lemon. For those of you watching that are Toyota fans I hope this video doesn't rub you the wrong way. I still enjoy the truck and look forward to building it into a great trail rig!

Yeah buddy! Let's go back to carbs, analog auto trans, cassette (or 8-track!) AM/FM stereos, paper maps and all the rest of "it was so much better back then." And we can go back to 6 mpg out of a 350 cu in with a whopping 180hp, tons of emissions, winding cassettes on our ball point pens which we will have plenty of time to do because we are friggen lost because the paper map got torn in half from all the incorrect folding and the half we need flew out the window 3 days ago. I'm not even trying to allude to all tech being great (every manufacturer has their highs and lows) but in general, things today are much better than in the dark ages. And cars back in the 70's and 80's were actually much less reliable than today.

Putting it in 4x4 - from my experience with my Tacoma - it's all about ensuring that there is no 'pre-load' or 'tension' or 'bind' in the driveline (shafts, axles, diff, etc) before you select 4high/low. That means wheels straight and settled out in neutral the best you can. I find the times I struggle is when there is a load on the driveline and it will struggle 'engaging.' It's nothing to do with leveling, IMO. Plus - and this has been true for any Toyota with electronic 4x4 actuation - "don't use it, you lose it," meaning if you go long intervals without turning that 4x4 knob, you'll find when you do need it, your actuator is cooked/gummed up and it won't activate. I turn mine on to 4high while rolling at least once per week (just cause), and I've never had problems. With your sensor issues - there is a recall on them and they need to be replaced or repaired - sounds like the rain cooked yours, so a new one under warranty is prob the way to go.
@terryeverly5617

@@terryeverly5617 No I've engaged it upwards of 20degrees of incline/decline. 90’s and early 2000 Toyota trucks are the golden years of Toyota. So much money spent on development. My 96 4Runner that I bought in VA had all original parts. Shocks, springs, all the engine parts, even the original rusted front and rear bumpers. Drove it cross country with no issues. Good luck and hope you get through all the issues with the Tacoma. The 90's and 2000's were probably the best years for all makes. Sure the newer stuff has more power and funky gadgets, and more safety systems, but all that is an electrical disaster waiting to happen. I like the older vehicles for a simpler electrical system, where any system had it's own module and switches/sensors, most newer stuff has everything integrated into a body control module so when there is a failure it causes widespread problems.

I owned the 4Runner and Tacomas since 1989. My brand loyalty was over the top. Never thought i would switch companies. When i need a new car, i was off to the Toyota dealership. I was in a bad crash with my 2016 Tacoma. Vehicle was totaled. I fully expected to purchase a new 2020-21 Tacoma off road in Silver. At the time there were none available and the dealership that i purchased 4 vehicles from acted as if they couldn't be bothered trying to find what i needed and wanted, we stopped off at the Jeep Dealership and fell in love with the Gladiator. im now just over a year with the Gladiator and absolutely love it. I purchased a Rubicon in Billet Silver. From the sales, finance ,and service im am totally satisfied with this vehicle. There is one fault with the Jeep which is the Back window leaks from the factory. The windows are on backorder and the Jeep Wave program has supplied me with a rental until the new glass comes in stock (first week of may). Front axle disconnect actuator. 100% guarantee, if you enjoy crossing rivers with axle deep water - most likely your front axle disconnect will develop issues. I’m sure some will say they never had any failures, but water & electronics don’t mix! Manual 4x4 shifter & manual locking front hubs, =100% more reliable!! Manufacturers should not be building these crappy electronic push buttons - we want reliability & simplicity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife went out and bought me a brand new SR5 Crew cab. This would be my third Toyota truck that I've owned. My first one was a 1989 with the 22RE and manual transfer case. I owned it for 25 years, and the guy I sold it to is still driving it. That was a 5 speed truck. My second one (which I have not sold as of yet) is a 2003 Tacoma with the 3.4 V6. I've had no issues with either truck. Transmission shifts beautifully with 204K on the clock. The 2021 Tacoma is a whole different story. If I could return it, I would. I'm having the same transmission problems hunting for gears issue. The truck is totally stock and to show how little I like this truck, it only has 4K miles on the clock. my wife was taken to the cleaners by the dealer who charged her 10K over sticker. I'm looking to trade it in for a stick version because the automatic is truly a slush box. I don't do much off road driving but the hunting for gears is getting to be a pain in the ass. Just like yourself, the tires are passenger car tires and it does not have much torque when tasking off from a dead stop. Also, it's showing me that I'm only getting 15 MPG on the highway. I don't mind the truck being a pig on gas as long as I have some performance. Also, who was the brain surgeon at Toyota who came up with that oil filter system? Yes, the shield is paper thin so I had to go out and install the TRD shield. Toyota had failed in quality big time. I can foresee this truck not making it past 100k without issues. I guess the big question is, what should I buy after trading this slush bucket in? Is there a truck available with the quality of my 1989? My buddy across the road just bought a brand new loaded F-150 two months ago. It's been in the shop twice since.

I agree- I find it funny how Toyota people just preach and preach about how reliable their trucks are- and how unreliable Land Rovers are- but I've found my 2003 Discovery (supposedly the worst year ever) to be trouble free for the most part and I wheel it hard. It's set up as an overland rig and it does just that! I think ALL vehicles have problems- and this proves it- even the "reliable" Toyotas- so buy something you love (used) and put in the effort (and money) to keep it running. It's a shame to see a brand new truck with this many issues- especially the "designed in" ones- but that's why I always buy used vehicles - most of the issues have forum solutions that are tried, tested and work!

I just bought a 08 FJ Cruiser, it’s a 6 speed manual with the manual shift transfer case, I always own older vehicles, this one is actually quite new to me 😂 the main reason I bought a 6 speed is because I don’t mind doing a clutch but I can’t stand high mileage automatics, seem to be problematic for me. One thing I can recommend is keep a code reader/ multi function gauge hooked up in your truck, my Toyota seems to pop up a random code every few weeks, I kind of think all the extra stuff just seems to be BS, Toyota’s aren’t what they use to be. Ravenol 75W is a direct Toyota LM fluid replacement, change oil, order off of Amazon, its 1 liter, has two tubes in bottle, pours right into transfer case. I work at a body shop. Everytime those front cameras and cruise modules get disconnected they have to be recalibrated everytime

No, they don't. I've disconnected mine 3 or 4 times now and no recalibration was/is needed.

@@HighjakSecondary alright man whatever you say. Just speaking from 6 years experience. What do I know right? I will say it'll vary from vehicle to vehicle but all newer Toyota 18 and up always get recalibrated here.

@@chauncey_got_tats Same. I'm speaking from the experience of doing this 3-4 times on the vehicle shown in this video. No calibration is needed.

Appreciate the honest review. It's true that electronics are a downfall of these trucks, mine included. I tried the radio fader yesterday.... thanks for making me aware of THAT issue, eh! 😕 Keep up the AWESOME content! 👍👍

I miss my '97 Tacoma. Manual transmission, manual door locks, manual windows. The least amount of stuff to go wrong. Just make sure to lock the hubs in before you get in the mud. Doing it after was annoying.

After listening to you, about all the problems of the "new" tacomas! I've decided to keep my 2004 TRD taco 4X4, V6 automatic with only 136K miles. Everything still works perfectly. Just regular routine maintenance.👍👍👍 Goes to show you that "Old School" is at times the best way to go.
