Finally Toyota is updating the Remote connect remote start system to stay running when you open or unlock the door. It looks like things are changing soon! Remote connect and drive off is the name of the new option.
They said that the new Crown will be the first with the new system. The patch will be available first for the new head unit meaning 22 and 23 tundra, 23 Sequoia and 23 highlander. They said the patch is too large to be an over the air update and they are trying to make it small enough where they can send it over the air but it may be something you need to have updated at the dealership when available. It should be coming really soon and I will do a update when I have a better idea of the timeline.
Would definitely love to have this for my 2022 Tundra before we get into the heart of winter here in the northeast. Hoping they push this out the door soon even if it means a trip to the dealer to flash the update.
@@sjnavarrete Did it cost you two arms, two legs and anything else they couldn't get out of you? Just kidding 🙂. I bought a 2023 Camry and they ripped me off BIG TIME. I guess it is the new normal.
I’d pay good money to fix this issue on my 22 Tacoma TRD OR I just bought. I hope this update comes. One of the few things that really grinds my gears about Toyota lol
Same with 23 taco trd OR.... HATE this stupid remote connect. 10 mintue shut off, and stupid issue of touching anything on the truck and shuts off the remote start. This has been standard features on all other car makers! Why toyta thought this was a good idea, no clue. They missed the mark. I don't think they will push to the old generations Tacomas, since new one is set to release next year or this year.
Happy to hear about this feature for 2023 models. It was one of my things I needed to get a 2023 Toyota RAV4. I have had a 2017 and 2020 Honda Civic and this was a standard feature on each one.
Hi Steve, thanks for your inputs on this channel. I'm planning to get the 2023 model of the tundra and I'm starting to consider the hybrid. Will this have a good second hand value as the gas ones? Please I need your thoughts on this.

Just found out today that my 2 year old tacoma can remote start with the fob. Immediately I hate that it shuts off when I get in it and have to start the engine again. I really hope my truck gets this update
This explains a lot lol. I just got a 2024 Highlander and I was so confused why I couldn’t get in without it turning off. I hope they do an update on it as well 🫤
Shame to Toyota for doing this and not having simple feature implemented. I just bought 22 Hybrid Se and just notices this and i was wowed! I also have 18 Focus remote start and its beautiful, it does not shut off and programmed weather turns on, keep the car warm in cold days and cool in warm days. Sit in the car hit the brake and simply push the start button once to let go off remote start mode and drive off!!
I know this vid is a year old but I just ran into an issue with my 2020 Lexus es 350 F Sport. I’ve had the car for a year and the remote start works as normal. You turn it on and it’ll shut off when you open the door. But yesterday when I opened my door, the car remained on and it shut off when I switched gears. Then I didn’t want to turn on after a few tries. Did something change with the remote start with Lexus?
Hi Steve, I have a 2021 Toyota Tacoma Trd sport. I see people on line who can use their key Fob to remote start. It's not working for me to press the lock button three times. I also did not extend my remote subscription through Toyota which is probably why key fob remote start isn't working. Do you know if this correct? Thanks
Hi Steven, do you know if the hybrid battery charges 12v battery? The reason that I ask that question is that I am going to have a month long vacation. I wonder if it is possible that I can use the app to remotely start the car and charge the 12v battery for maintenance. Thanks in advance.
@@beam887 the vehicle has an alternator to charge it. The main battery will not charge the 12v no. The issue you may have if you remote start it is that you can only start it 2 times before you have to open the door and close it to get 2 more times to start it
@@stevenwelchtoyota Thanks Steven, it's good to know that. Can I use a secondary 12v battery to support the 12v battery instead while I am on vacation?

That’s good to hear since I’m looking to trade in our 2020 explorer ST for a 2023 sequoia. It’s a bit frustrating Toyota hasn’t been able to provide this sooner since other car manufacturers have. I have to deal with this in my Tacoma. The explorers remote start puts the car in a standby mode and no one can take off in it until you get in it with the key, push the brakes and start button. All while not shutting off. Necessary while loading the kids up in Arizona summers.
Good to hear, but when is the update coming out? I just bought a 2022 Tundra in August. I see other truck brands have remote start and drive off without the engine shutting down once they opened the door. It's so weird when you spend a lot on a Toyota car and its missing some basic stuff vs other competitions....

Hi Steve, I just bought a Venza 2023, my remote engine start from the app or from my keys are working properly but when I open the door it shut down. The car stay running and I can not unlock otherwise it shutting down.
I saw in another post you mentioned this will be available for the 22-23 tundras with new head unit, does that mean 2020 tundras with remote connect will not have the start, drive-off feature available?
Would this be applicable to a 2021 HIghlander Platinum (Entune System, not the new Toyota Multimedia System). I have this bookmarked and check back every couple of weeks hoping it will some day come true!
I got a 2024 Camry and it shuts off when I open the door. Isn’t being able to get in without having to start your car and doing so with remote the whole purpose of the remote starts job? 😅

I have a ‘23 Camry SE w/o push button start. Can I add “remote connect” to be able to remote start the vehicle? When using the app it only gives me Wifi hotspot and “safety connect” as options?? maybe remote start not available on the SE?? 🤔
I got the camry xse awd 2023 and when I go inside the remote start turns off did the software update come yet? Also at night time my reverse camera is black and white pictures, it's not clear color picture at all. Should I get that checked ?
I have a 2020 Rav 4 but I have to push the lock button 3 times to have it start. Are u saying I will not be able to get the update? Is there anything I can do to change that?
Not sure if you did a video on this but could Toyota send an update over the air for a audible chirp for when you have your turn signal on and someone is in your blind spot? The 2023 RAV4 Hybrid chirps a lot and just surprised that it doesn’t for BSM. Any insight?
Steve, thanks for the video, please create a new video once Toyota gets this feature enabled. bought in March 2022, have all the latest updates according to HUD and Toyota iOS app. Sure hope they get it going soon. I see a lot of Tundras both used and new on dealership lots. And I drive the through the southeast US states in the last 3 months. Really considering selling and moving to another truck manufacturer. BS Subscription model for Toyota is totally a rip off. $70K for a truck with no navigation and remote start is uncalled for in my opinion.
My remote Bob has quit working to crank my Toyota Tacoma TRD sport 2020. I was told that I need to replace the truck battery. I have already replaced the Bob battery still don't work. Any help??
Thanks for the info..however entering the vehicle and pressing the brake and start button to engage shifter would be the same as it shutting off and turning back on
I think that's why they won't ever fix the engine shutting off after remote start. I hope they do though! I hate the engine shutting off entering the vehicle especially since it's locked and I have the fob in my pocket.
As always thanks, Steve for the video. Always good incite on features and updates. Anybody have updates on this for 2022 models? I’d imagine the MMI doesn’t differ too much from car to car of the same year model. I just picked up the 2022 Avalon (RIP). If a simple over the air update worked on the 2022 Tundra, I’d guess it would work with any other 2022 vehicles equipped with remote connect. Upon reaching out to the Toyota Brand Engagement Center they replied, “At this time there are no plans to retrofit legacy remote connect Toyota vehicles.” I’m not too sure they understood my question though. Maybe (I’d hope not) Toyota will just refuse to send this out to all pre-23 vehicles equipped with remote connect. Thanks again, Steve for keeping us loyal Toyota owners up to date! Cheers. 🍻

Hi Sir, After 3 years on my 2019 Rav4, Remote Start is not working even after subscription being active. Dealership says DCM went faulty. But I don’t think so as SOS is working. Do you have any idea / guess ?
@@stevenwelchtoyota Appreciate your response. My subscription for Remote Connect has been active since starting (at the end of 6 months Trial). It was working fine till end of 3 years. But after 3 years, I am unable to do Remote Start both from Key Fob as well as App. Do you guess anything ?
Last I was told they are trying to make the update package small enough for an over the air update. It may be an thing where it has to be dealer updated. Keep subscribed because as soon as the update is happening I will produce a video to announce it.
Recently purchased a 2023 Camry SE upgrade and engine still shuts off once I unlock doors. How do I update the remote connect? I haven't received any requests to update
It is Feb 19 2023, I have a new 2023 Camry XSE V6 received on Jan. 17th 2023. Nope ... no update Remote Start and opening the Door car shuts off. Toyota has not done anything ... old news don't expect anything from Toyota...using the App requires paying for Service and still limited. Toyota has gone Cheap but as same time Toyota making a Profit as you pay for the service which should be Free for the life of the vehicle.
My 2024 does not show any setting feature that allows me to change the remote start stop when entering the vehicle- it shuts off after using the app to start and entering the vehicle so it’s a fail for my 2024 SR5 Premium and no updates are available
So i have a 2016 lexus and have a subscription and i can remote start my vehicle with my phone. Would that possibly get the same update for what your referring to or would my vehicle not meet the requirements. Just wondering that's all
@@stevenwelchtoyota thanks for the info hopefully it happens Another question my wife has a 2020 sienna van xle premium i wanted to add it to my lexus app but wasn't sure if they charge for each car to have that or not
Best things yall can do is call toyta and request this to be pushed to older generations. Praying is not gona do anything. Voices need to be heard. Is bogus it's not going to be pushed to older vehicles with remote connect. Especially if your paying for a half ass remote feature to use the app. You don't need it but the range on fob is piss poor so it's kinda necessary

Like that Toyota is listening. Still kinda perplexed that someone thought it was a good idea to have it shut off to begin with. @stevenwelch is Toyota still doing a longer “free trial” period on remote connect? Heard 90 days, heard 1-year, heard 3 and 10 years. What’s the latest?

It's Toyota's way of making profit, must pay for those App services instead of being Free for the life time of your vehicle. We pay dearly for car technology, but get into an accident, insurance company deems car totaled and they recover the parts and you get stuck buying another Plastic Car for a higher price. Auto industry not stupid, they make nothing to last long, and auto insurance companies are loving it too ... they are in cahoots together and making large profits. Banks love it too as they foresee you getting a higher APR ..interest rate. Scam and Scheming.
Too bad@@stevenwelchtoyota I use connected services through my phone, so I would think it would. If all the other safeguards are in place that you mention, there is absolutely no reason for the engine to cease.
For those of you who have plug-in-hybrid vehicles you probably have discovered that in the cold winter days while plugged in, the OEM remote start only runs the HVAC system nothing else. Also if you have a rav4prime like me, you'll be upset with the fact that it only runs the weak-ass heat-pump and will never burn gasoline. Add this to the short run time, and your lucky to get more then 30-40f inside the car on a cold day. you still have to unplug in for driving. And it will shut off that heat/ac when you open the door. Adding an aftermarket unit makes a big difference with 45 min run time, and full take over. You can even program it to run gas mode if the temperature is below a programable set point. There is one major catch tho...if the plug spout is inserted during this remote start request, the most it will be allowed to do is remote start in ACCY mode, with no heat, and no AC, and no EV or GAS mode engaged. Meaning you'll have to go out into the cold, pull out the plug, go back inside, then remote start the rav4prime. What is the point??! i have a safe fix for that issue as well.
@@stevenwelchtoyota I get it, but here in north Indiana we want 70f or better when we remote start the our cars in the winter. Me personally, I never want to scrape ice or snow off my windows....EVER.
I like the way it works now. Start the truck to warm it up on cold days. After 10 minutes it shuts off. Doors are still locked. The other way to look at it is, no one can steal the truck while it's running.
the car could just shut off when you hit the brake to put it in gear if you don't have the key.. way better solution.. having the whole car shut off is completely unnecessary and causes additional strain on the engine in the cold

one thing I hate, is that you can only remote start twice in a row and then it is disabled until you go out to your car, that is very annoying and inconvenient. I understand if they need to delay between remote starts, which my previous remote starter from dronemobile did , but there should be no caps on sequential remote starts if you dont end up going out to your car.
OEM starters do this sometimes, 3rd party starters normally do not. Toyota finally listened, but you would have to buy a new car to get it ! I guess better late than never. Toyota probably has to worry about liability with remote start, which explains why it works that way.
@@stevenwelchtoyota A crappy excuse. It was not that difficult to make it re-check for keyfob at door open. If missing, then kill it, but if present then your good to just drive off,
I have 2023 Tundra and it shuts off wheb opening doors, unlocking, etc...and I there are no settings in app of car to enable that I can find. So almost 1 year after this video and it still has bot been updated (unless it has and I missed something? It is kind of infuriating. Can you also tell me why touching the handle of the passenger side door (with key on me) all doors unlock, but when touching drivers door only that door unlocks? (this is the most infuriating of all). if I have stuff in my hands I need to put in the back. I have to still open the door fumble around to find the button, shut the door, go back and open the back door; where any other car I've owned I can just tap my hand or wrist to the handle and all doors unlock.. And it really is just beyond me Why the driver's side only unlocks one door but the passenger side opens all doors. Do you have any insight if that's a setting somewhere that can be changed or maybe the dealership can change it like they can turn off that fake V8 sound? Thanks
It will be updated at some point I have been told. You can just hold the drivers door for 3 seconds without opening the door to open all doors. I will make a video to help show you
Just got the 2023 Camry xse , great car love how it drives but the remote start shutting off as soon I open the door is very annoying. I remember the app telling me about a specific step with the SOS button but I’m not sure how to properly / finish connecting it. If anybody knows, please respond w the solution under this comment. Thanks!
I just bought a 2024 Camry from the showroom and it does the same thing. I updated it and it does the same thing. It's ridiculous because if you put it on gear or you press the brake it turns off just like Volkswagen so why do they make it that when you open the door it turns off. Smh like it makes me consider asking them to give me back my money for the remote start
Not so much a comment but questions. No one seems to know. On a stock 3rd gen Tacoma, if you go to your vehicle and do a manual start, cuz it’s cold, I'm in Canada, and go back in the house with my fob in my pocket, can a potential thief be able to get in and drive off? Is truck locked or unlocked at this point due to manual start? And is my fob required to be on my person for me to be able to drive off? I suspect this should be a yes. Does my Tacoma need to talk to my fob to be able to shit to drive? Really hope someone knows the answer, maybe you. If a thief CAN drive off without my fob, this seems like a serious Toyota security issue. I’m sure the affordable remote start add ons available should prevent this as 3 lock clicks to start will surely lock all doors during the remote starting process. I realize 15 minutes run time will timeout and stop engine, doors should remain locked and restart will be required before driving off. So, Mr. Welch, I’m certain most Tacoma owners do not know but WOULD LOVE TO KNOW these answers. Can you help me/us?
