Toyota Repair Door Latch handle Toyota 4Runner 1996-2002 - • Toyota Repair Door Lat...
This simple repair will allow you to open the front and rear doors for many years to come. Minimal tools needed and just a simple zip tie. I actually did this repair in February of 2012 and it is still working fine.

First of all, THANK YOU for including gals! I do tons of work on my truck myself and watch lots of videos to find out how. And nobody ever considers that women are also using the videos. Much appreciated. Second, I like a guy that can come up with a solution instead of just telling you how to put the OEM parts in. Great video.

Perfect. Did it with only a zip tie. I could hear that the wire was going all the way to the latch and was confused what broke. Never realized that little clip could cause that. Thanks

Thanks for the video, my Toyota 4Runner had the same problem, AND also needed a new power window switch. Your steps using a zip tie worked perfectly. Found a replacement power window switch Online. Total time for both jobs was under 20 minutes and saved myself a couple hundred dollars! Thanks again!!!

Glad it helped and a funny thing, the zip tie finally gave out last week so it lasted almost 3 years. Not too bad for a cheap fix. Thanks for watching.

I checked the dealership for cost on a replacement and it was only a couple bucks but I think they had to order it. I just used your method and it worked great.

Thank you! I actually used a plastic clip used for coaxial cable and instead of the nail it comes with, I used a small self tapping sheet metal screw. Thanks again for the Yota Hack!

It worked! But I actually had purchased the correct part before replacing. My door skin did not pull away as easily as in the video. Fortunately, I was able to get the top of the panel loose enough to simply pull it away and enable replacement of the proper part. After, I needed a small pry bar to get under the lip of the interior door panel, sort of like the way you get the rim of a tire over the wheel. You may want to buy a couple of extra tabs to press into the interior door panel when you're done, for a finished-looking job.This DIYer asily saved more than $200. Thank you!

Omg thanks for this I'm an idiot. Something so minor, I didn't think could have an effect. Here I am actuating that rod thinking there's nothing f'ing wrong here. My clip wasn't even broken I just didn't put it back together right.

Worked like a charm. However I forgot to trim my zip tie excess and now I can here the window snapping it at the glass goes up. Just need to open it again and cut off the excess zip tie. Also, instead of washers, I used some flat plastic and drilled a hole through both of them instead of a metal washer..... hoping I wouldn't hear a metal washer rattling around. Worked great, thanks for posting this.

Many thanks! I opened up the door as instructed - though I actually broke the little white plastic piece where the rod goes into the handle so need to replace. However, the clip you showed broken in your door was OK in mine. My issue is the little yellow plastic piece broke at the handle which the level and it fell down in the window. I need to replace if I can find that piece but did use a zip tie in the meantime and it works! Glad you mentioned zipties for yours. This is my first car repair - any recommendations on where to find those little plastic parts online?

From which side do you push the tie to the other end, and how do you knot the tie to keep it from pushing through the hole?

Thank you. A great help. My door is in the closed position. I'm hoping that I can open it by removing the inside handle, and pulling the linkage.
@watchmyvidsagain
@watchmyvidsagain 7 лет назад
That should work and when you get time just zip tie the rod that attaches to the handle and you have a fully functional door again. Mine has been working since I posted the video 4 years ago. Glad I could help and thanks for watching.

How do you get the panel off if the door doesn't open from either handle? This is the key question that was asked 10 months ago but not answered. The video shows the door off. How did you get the door off when the door doesn't open? Assuming the door is still on the car (like mine), how do do take the panel off with the door still locked? Reply 1

Bill Helmer Hey Bill, take off the inside latch panel where the door handle is. Then find the metal rod and pull it towards the front of the car. The door should then open. If you need more help let me know. Thanks for watching.

My 1998 4Runner has 165,000 miles on it.... chances are the zip tie will outlast the vehicle! But miracles do happen!
@watchmyvidsagain
@watchmyvidsagain 8 лет назад
I'm at roughly 245.000 miles on a '97 and so you might have to replace the zip tie once or twice more. Luckily it's a quick fix.

I bought our 4runner with 258,000 miles on it 2 years ago and we're still going strong with over 100K more miles that yours, so I'll bet on the runner over the zip tie!!! :)
