I live in tropical Mexico, with temperatures in summer of 95 Fahrenheit. Local toyota dealer uses 5w30 toyota non synthetic oil. After a year I changed to 0w16 as recommended in my Toyota manual. Oil temperature drop two centigrades with new thinner oil. I drive calmly in city but revs my engine when I hit the highway. I take it to 9000 kilometres before changing oil. So far so good, not oil consumption after a couple of years

Dear@@ced_ambience thanks for your question. Unfortunately my driving habits makes it very difficult to compare, I would say it is about the same MPG I am register after 0w16 oil. By the way this are two similar Toyota engines, 2.5 liters on Rav4 and Camry, both 2019 models. Both same oil history, both same results. Mobil1 0w16 has been the only brand that sells 0w16 in Mexico. Mobil 1 0w16, compared to Toyota 0w16 oil are very similar, with the exception of Molybdenum, that Toyota oil comes with 755 ppm of Molybdenum vs Mobil 1 that registers only 81 ppm of same antifriction aditive Molybdenum. My last change has been pouring half can of liquimoly Ceratec to add Molybdenum and reach around 300 ppm of Molybdenum, my BlueDriver device test shows same working temperature but engines definetively rev faster with 150 ml of Ceratec into each one. Hope this information helps, best wishes from Mazatlan, Mexico.

In my country, Pakistan, Toyota recommends various viscosities ranging from 5w30 to 5w-50 for different ambient temperatures for the 2ZR-FE powered Corolla. This engine is still being offered in the Corolla here. 5w30 is filled from the factory. Since it is quite hot in the summers here, the Toyota manual for the corolla recommends 5w30 in winters and 10w30 in summers. 10w40 and 5w50 are recommended for extremely hot regions and/or for older engines. 0w20 is recommended as an all year round oil for hybrids only. I know, in the U.S., 0w20 is recommended for the 2ZR-FE. There have been reported 2ZR-FE failures using the 0w20 in the scorching 50C heat south of my country. I've been using 5w30 in winters and 10w30 in summers as per the Owner's manual recommendation, and never faced any problem. Over here, we use kms. I change the oil every 5000 kms or 6 months, which ever comes first. My corolla has accumulated 2,57000 kms and the engine still runs great. The car has undergone suspension work, though, but that is another story.

@alimujtaba747

I'm using Toyota 5w30 semi synthetic in winters and Toyota 10w30 conventional in summers. Toyota oil, here, is blended by Mobil1 and Idemitsu. The Toyota 5w30 semi synthetic is blended by Mobil 1, and the 10w30 and 5w50 are blended by Idemitsu. 5w50 and the 0w20 (hybrid oil) are the only two full synthetic oils on offer under the Toyota Motor Oil brand in Pakistan. These viscosities are recommended for use in Pakistan's hot environment only, as per the owner's manual. We get the 1.6L 1ZR-FE and the 1.8L 2ZR-FE powered corollas here. There also used to be a 1.3L Corolla but that was discontinued and replaced by the Yaris Sedan in 2020.

It's interesting to me that while 0w-16 is recommended for all countries.. In the diagram it states "Expected temperature before oil change" ... My vehicle is never exposed to below zero temperatures... According to that chart it's 5w-30 all year around.. In turn that helps prevent blow by which in turn extends the oils life. The only cost.. a slight decrease in mpg... But an extended oil change interval. 0w-16... You're easily changing at 3-6k miles to get rid of gas that has blown by the cylinders.

In some engines with low-tension rings, a higher viscosity oil can increase oil usage. The low tension rings ride up on the more viscous film of oil, allowing that film of oil to enter the combustion area. Same way a lighter car will hydroplane more easily than a heavier car, assuming identical tires.
@imzjustplayin
@imzjustplayin Год назад
lighter cars aren't any more likely to hydroplane compared with a heavier car. Hydroplaning has to do with evacuation of water from under the tires more than anything. Insufficient tread depth and driving too fast is guaranteed way to hydroplane in any vehicle regardless of weight. Just remember, container ships float and they're in the thousands of tons. Oil control rings gumming up is more of design issue with them being low tension and pistons not providing sufficient cooling which allows them to gum up due to the high piston temperatures. The higher the spot temperatures in the engine, the more likely the oil will burn and carbonize in the ring landings especially if it's a thinner oil. Low viscosity oils are mostly for moderate to cold climate cold start benefits. There are no fuel economy benefits with thin oil when the ambient temperature is above 95F because the viscosity of these oils is at most 15 centistokes less than the thickest oil. 0W-16 vs 5W-50. The biggest difference between the oils is when cold or warm which are in the thousands or hundreds of centistokes respectively. Using a PAO oil such as the Mobil 1 European formula 0W-40 or Castrol Syntec 0W-40 or the Amsoil reduces oil consumption if there is any by half. "fake synethic" as the video author has alluded to is something specific to synthetic oil sold in the USA because European oil needs to be a PAO oil to be considered "synthetic" while in the USA, it just has to have additional processing done to it. @@Resistculturaldecline

Back in the early 2000s, Toyotas and VWs were through a sludging problem they commonly referred to as “gelling”. Toyota went to a full synthetic engine oil back in due to their VVTI systems and requiring thinner oils. They went to a 5W-30 and increased the frequency of the engine oil changes to 5000 miles. VW had BG make their engine oil that came with BG MOA. Much of those gelling issues began to disappear. IMO engine issues will increase by extending the engine oil change intervals. I still used BG EPR every 30,000 miles on all cars I service. I still recommend a 5,000 interval and the manufacturers engine oil recommendations.

Oil weight is simple. The first number is how thick it is when the engine is cold. The second number is how thick it is when the engine is hot. When a engine has 200k miles on it the rings, cylinders, and bearings are worn out and have more space between them. The first oil change on my 2009 corolla with 115,000 (I just bought it) I used Supertech 5w-30 full synthetic high mileage oil. Not sure if that's right, the oil cap reads 0w-20 or 5w-20 which is pretty close to 5w-30 honestly.
@nickthompson529
@nickthompson529 2 месяца назад
5w-30 will absolutely not cause cam phaser issues. Cold 0w-20 is thicker than warm 5w-30. So you would have cam phaser issues when the engine was cold and this is not the case. Toyota went to 0w-20 so that they could claim a slight increase in fuel economy due to the thinner oil causing less drag on the engine. In normal driving conditions a slight increase or even decrease in viscosity will have no detrimental effects. Oils can actually thin or thicken during an oil change interval on their own. I like this channel and the guy gives great info most of the time.
@repairvehicle

Did I say it will cause cam phasers?
@nickthompson529
@nickthompson529 2 месяца назад
Yes! At 5:01 of the video you say, “Modern Toyota engines with variable valve timing need thinner oil otherwise cam phaser issue will be a common thing”. Which I agree with if you go drastically out of grade; however, the difference in a quality synthetic 5w-30 and a 0w-20 will not cause an issue. I’m not trying to get on your case, I have learned a lot from your videos and you definitely know more about these engines than I probably ever will. I’m currently running 5w-30 Valvoline restore and protect in a 2021 tundra with 42k miles on the clock. I’m in Oklahoma and it’s summer, so the truck doesn’t seem any different with thicker oil at all. I will more than likely change back to 0w-20 before winter to take advantage of the cold flow properties of the thinner oil on cold starts.

Mobil 1 EP 0w20 has a viscosity of 8.8 @100*c, Mobil 1 EP 5w30 has a viscosity of 10.2 @ 100*c, so how can a viscosity point spread of 1.4 @ 100*c have any negative impact on the engine parts, the most important thing with oil is MOFT Minimum Oil Film Thickness, that provides the boundary film to keep metal parts separated, the 0w20 is a CAFE driven spec, I do believe it will provide protection for most driving conditions, but 5w30 gives you that little extra protection. why change if everything is working fine? let off the gas sooner when approaching a stop. minimize sitting still (drive thru). stay closer to speed limit. ensure car doesn't have excess junk in the trunk. ensure tires are properly inflated (or 2-3 psi over - see sticker in driver door jam). 0W-20. 0W30. I do not believe any of these oils are good for a vehicle that sits 3-4 weeks at a time. If you are commuting every day, then perhaps. I have a BMW Z3 2.8L. BMW started recommending zero weight oil. So I tried it. I flushed out the old 5W-30 and put in 0W-30. Seemed to work OK, because I had driven it the last few days. Fine. But now I left the car sit for 3 weeks. Man. When I started it after 3 weeks. The starter turned hard, and it started but shaking like the engine was going to fall out. So what happens. The oil is so thin that it all drains down to the bottom of the oil pan. There is minimal oil left between the surfaces of crank parts, piston walls and etc. because it is so thin. I immediately dumped the oil and went back to 5W-30. The engine smoothed out. I even have wondered about the 5W-30 oil in the past because the engine would shake a little on startup. I really think the 10W-30 would be the best bet. It is thick enough to keep oil sticking between the parts when not run for a few weeks. At least for summer temperatures. Keep in mind it is the EPA pushing car companies to use 0W-20 or 30. for better gas mileage. But they don't care how soon your car wears out from lack of oil film between parts. They tested that most engine wear is on startup. Well, a dry engine with 0W oil does not help the engine much on startup.
