Toyota's New Le Mans Hypercar: The GR010

Toyota was the first manufacturer to get its 2021 Le Mans Hypercar on track. Named the GR010, the new car shares very little with the TS050 LMP1 car that came before it. So what's different? What can be expected when these cars hit the track for the first time in this year's World Endurance Championship?

The Toyota Logic is simple: If it isn't broke, don't fix it. Hence the similarities with the LMP1. From what I gather, this new Hyper Car class was created to allow for other manufacturers/builders to get in the game... and to essentially slow Toyota down a bit to allow for more competitive racing.
@14stockfan
@14stockfan 3 года назад
I think even with BoP Toyota is still going to dominate. The teams they will be going up against are essentially garbage tier privateers compared to Toyota. They have much more engineering expertise available at their fingertips, I'm afraid it's going to be more of the same even once LMDh cars enter the picture.

Thank you for clearing up the GR010's LMP1-esque design. Kinda annoyed me how people criticised the new LMH class for bringing nothing new to the table just because Toyota's interpretation of the class rules resulted in a car that looked similar to an LMP1 car. Personally I'm hyped for the new class! And great vid btw!

They really needed to build up from scratch because of the new regulations. Modifying the TS050 to meet the LMH regulations would’ve likely been far less optimal than building a new one entirely.

Depending on gearing this should have a scorching top speed with that extra horsepower
@csonkaperdido
@csonkaperdido 3 года назад
I think they're going to almost be forced to strip downforce and lengthen the gearing for top speed because of the extra weight of the car. Weight KILLS cornering speeds, but doesn't affect top speeds anywhere near as much. I'm hoping for 220+mph... Or at least 210-215. The Rebellion lmp1 car (which is actually an Oreca, but whatever) hit something like 345kph at Le Mans 2020. I'm American - so kph is a somewhat foreign measurement... But I do know that 322kph is exactly 200mph. So 345kph is probably like 212mph- 213 or something like that. Let's hope it's at least as fast as the rebellion - it had around 650hp, but also had a ton of downforce. Even in Le Mans low drag trim it had literally well over 1 ton of downforce... And downforce =drag, even if it's super efficient downforce from venturi tunnels and a diffuser. WE WANT THEM FAST AND LOUD!!
@speedymouse2859

@@csonkaperdido lengthen the gearing? This car has less power than the TS050 and has to accelerate that mass...it may end up at a higher top speed at LM but these cars won't have a low drag setup so the speeds we've seen at Spa are what we'll see at LM...

Great video! But look, there are lots of questions regarding LMh. Many were hyped for the LMh class, me included, precisely because the cars were going to look like road models (even based on them) produced by different big manufacturers and competitive against each other. Instead, Aston Martin chimped out, Audi and Porsche will maaaaaaaaaybe join in 2022-2023 (and for that time they pulled from Formula E), ByKolles and Glickenhaus are still dead silent about the actual cars (well, WEC released a video with their mention for 2021 today but that's all) and only shown renders. Even if they will be ready on time, it looks like the actual fight in class will be for 2nd place with Toyota being so far ahead that catching up isn't even a question, just with different manufacturers. So, the top class doesn't change the situation in the series that much, didn't yet attract the manufacturers that it was created to attract, the only (so far) car in it became bigger, heavier and slower than its predecessor, and they even look almost the same. Plus, there already is LMDh class that's essentially the same but can race on both sides of the ocean and is more affordable. Kind of like LMGTE and GT3 situation, Triple Crown racing made a good video on that recently. I am as eager to see a new class as you are and wish the best for the GR010. Yet from the spectator's point of view, it is hard to maintain the hype. I pray for the success of the class because it has great potential, but for all the effort they could have just brought back GT1. Nevertheless, you won yourself a subscriber)
@GTRain
@GTRain 3 года назад
You bring up some great points there! In retrospect, the class being called “Le Mans Hypercar” probably put together way too many false images images in peoples’ minds of what the cars would actually look like. LMDh does seem to be the more attractive option for some big manufacturers right now, namely Audi and Porsche, but that class does have some flaws of its own that would have most likely prevented Toyota or Glickenhaus from entering. Perhaps I’ll try to make a separate video on that soon. Also, if you want to see updates on the Glickenhaus hypercar, I suggest checking out their Instagram and Twitter for progress photos. They have already started building the cars and hopefully they’ll be ready for Spa in a few months. Appreciate the support!
@14stockfan

I think ACO shot themselves in the foot with these regulations. The real winner is going to be IMSA with the LMDh cars, seems like a lot of the manufacturers are choosing to go that route because it is the more budget conscious option. Either that or ACO knew hyper cars were going to be a pathetic showing manufacturer wise and decided to mooch off of IMSA by doing a converged class with cars that fit each series agenda.

To be fair, the original intent was actually more along the lines of the vaunted GT1 (to appease certain manufacturers and entice others). But, 18 months on, they've been back-pedaling to appease other manufacturers who aren't interested in that route. It should be, that everyone gets to do it in the way they want, but in the end speed or outcome should be the same. 2015 and 2016 Le Mans were perfect. 2015 The Porsche had the better Hybrid System but Audi had the better aero, so they still were pretty similar in laptimes and position until Tandys monsterstint in the night. 2016 Porsche had the better speed, but Toyota could run more laps on fuel, so they were pretty even again. Gotta disagree with you, pretty much top to bottom. The best endurance races have occurred when the cars actually were nearly identical in terms of pace. However, historically that's been an insanely expensive arms race. The world economy and manufacturers simply aren't interested in spending that kind of money. Every decision made by the ACO, etc. has been in pursuit of cost savings - to actually encourage manufacturers to participate. I don't give a flying fuck about the performance of the cars...as long as there are plenty of them, something that hasn't been the case for a while. In today's economic climate, try pitching a multi-billion dollar racing investment and see how far you get. The BOP approach is about cost, full stop. If it generates close racing as well, bonus.

By your logic, rally car racers should just go drifting since they are using production-based cars instead of prototypes, thus handicapping their performance? Lol 😂 Even prototypes of today are not being designed to be ultimately fast, they have a lot of restrictions compared to the racing prototypes of old. The Porsche 917 turbo had 1100 hp back in the seventies. The point of sports car racing for big manufacturers is marketing. And with the cars looking nothing like the what they are actually selling, there's a loss in marketing potential. And even though power is not the main objective of race car design, current supercars/hypercars being more powerful than actual race cars just feels off, unlike the sports car racing of the 90s and before where the racing version of the cars were more powerful than their road going counterparts. This similarity to LMP1 is a problem I think. I remember the announcement of LMH and it was supposed to resemble road cars. Well, it doesn't, it's more of the same the we had in LMP1. But if the new regulations can bring the competition back at the top, it's a good move. For 2021 - no, we will have 2 Toyotas, 1 old LMP1, which should be made slower so that's it's fair for those developing new cars and 2 Glickenhaus cars, which are going to be under-tested and remain a big question mark, if they are going to be reliable and competitive. But really it's just to drag a 2 minute video into 10 minutes and 1 second for that sweet, sweet ad revenue. WTF1 is a good example. I can't stand it for some reason. More like STFU1 to me... But I digress... It's AWESOME to have a sportscar focused channel - or at least a channel that talks about sportscars often. They are so much cooler than f1 cars, the racing is a million times better, the cars look better, and the drivers tend to not be super egotistical jerkoffs who think they can either save the world by themselves (ahem.. BTW I actually do like and watch f1, and I follow it closely... But it's just content saturation at this point. There's literally nothing original on any of the channels except an occasional driver interview where some dork asks a driver stupid questions about their favorite ice cream flavor, or which movie is this quote from... Who the fuck cares? They're drivers, not movie and food critics. Rant over. My take is they could get most of the cost saving without crippling the performance this much. 10 sec slower laps while having significantly higher top speed is insane. These things are slooooooow in the corners. They clearly went overboard with the weight and aero restrictions.

In nearly every racing series the cars/bikes are getting heavier and I hate it more than anything. I don't care how much horse power they have but when the power to weight ratio is screwed the horses really don't matter anyway. They look and behave like limousines/lorries. Not nearly as aggressive and nimble which race cars should be. What's the point? Just race with your +1000kg street legal cars at this point... you also save much more money this way.

Is bodywork recognizable to the brand not a requirement any more? When hypercar was introduced last year it was represented as homologated street hypercars built to race leading everyone to believe that the cars would be easily recognized and look good. The Toyota looks just like the lmp cars and is ugly

Generation COVID 19 and Generation No competition. WEC or WRC same story. First GP 1962 in RSA. I know I am getting old. But Jesus in 1985 - 1992 you had Jaguar, Porsche, Mercedes, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Peugeot, etc. I was at Le Mans with 300.000 other fans. After Balestre we got Jean Todt who has only destroyed everything. Today I prefer to see a race organized by Peter Auto or Stephane Ratel. Please fire Jean Todt and try to find a guy like American Le Mans Series who pass away. Jean Todt has done nothing for the championship. If I was the boss I would erase LMP1 or Hypercar and allow LMP2 and accept more than Oreca, Ligier, Dallara and Multimatic. Even back in the 70's you had Porsche 917 VS Ferrari 512 S and more competition. Today Toyota against a rich film maker. IS THIS A REAL WOLRD CHAMPIONSHIP ? No, no and no. Even when I organize at my home a Play station competition there are more competitors. So let's us pray Amen. Jean Todt is everything but not a HYPERMAN.

You don't know much about the Hypercar regs do you? Toyota, Audi, Porsche, Peugeot, Glickenhaus, Alpine mabye ByKolles and other LMDh manufacturers will join in the next few years, how much more competition do you need?

Shouldnt have called it hypercar then, thats a misnomer as we have hypercars available as road cars. Having a name like hypercar builds expectations that the class will be a return to the days when the top class of Le Mans was a literal hypercar with gt fittings. Should have just called it LMP1 and changed the regulations.
@Maenfy
@Maenfy 3 года назад
Well literal Hypercars can be entered in the class, Aston Martin planned to that before they backed out. The Toyota and the Glickenhaus could still get road legal versions.

Still yet to see anyone bring back Diesel. I know Toyota has the money and capability to do it, maybe they're afraid of losing the project due to costs, like Audi and Peugeot experienced.

I thought LMH would either end up looking like daytona Prototypes from 2016 and earlier (not GT1's from the early 90's 😂) or adopt the DPi platform from IMSA. Speaking of which I dont really see any Toyota styling ques in the GR010, thats whats really disapointing to me personally. Even so these new regulations might mean it's not too far removed from DPi underneath. It makes sense it takes on a LMP aero package, it's a proven platform. Afterall the only platform that out ranks LMP's are formula car type chassis.

Well the "billboard wing" has performance reasons, that's like saying F1 shouldn't use rear wings because they don't look good. What sense does that make? ^^
