I did the same 4 speaker upgrade with the factory unit 2 years ago. Make sure you use the sound matting behind the plastic adapters. Over time, the speakers will loosen the bolts and rattle against the metal body. I thought I had 2 blown fronts, but it was simply the plastic bracket rattling from the speaker bass. Put a sheet of sound matting over the speaker opening, cut around the hole with a blade, mount the plastic adapter, and insert the speaker. This also provides a better seal between the speaker and door allowing for cleaner bass and sound. Think of it as a sealed speaker box.
@Tacomaholic
@Tacomaholic 4 года назад
That's a great tip. I'll probably do that soon.

@@Tacomaholic do it! Especially if you live in a warm climate. Over time, those plastic speaker brackets will warp slightly due to heat. I got mine from Crutchfield. The sound deadening material will absorb some of the warping, but still keep a good seal. Been there done that.

Pro tip on removing the door plastic: Invert a can of canned air; this will freeze the 'tar' holding the plastic on and keep things very clean. Work in small sections, and it'll pop free without leaving strings of tar covering everything. It also makes it easy to reinstall that plastic, and... REINSTALL THAT PLASTIC!

Just a note to say thank you for all your great videos. The first mod that I did on my 2014 Tacoma Access was installing the UNI filter. My latest mod was sound deadening the doors, upgrading my stereo with the Subaru Kicker tweeters and new 6 x 9 speakers. The Rockfords are a bit expensive in Canada so I went with the Kicker DSC6930 that I found on sale. The only issue is that the holes on the speakers did not align with the ones on Metra bracket, so I had to drill a small pilot hole for the fourth screw. Thanks to your videos the install was super easy and the speakers sound amazing. Thanks again for all the help.

Finished this last week along with the full cab sound dampening with the noico and a layer of second skin MLV. On the doors I added in the noico red foam on top of the noico silver. Only things I did differently was I drilled the speaker tabs to the correct spot vs angling the screws and the noico red foam in the doors. Oh and I also put the plastic back in place to cover the holes. The difference in how quiet it is and the stereo sound is fantastic! Thanks for all the hard work. Oh, and yah those tabs in the inside just snap off, no dremel needed.

Great video, I really appreciate the effort you put it. Can I offer a simpler solution to the Dremel...The tabs you want to remove all have a slight slit in them all you need to do is take some duck bill pliers and pry them off. I then used a quick pass of a hand file to smooth them off, snapper would work too to remove any sharpness. Just a little tip to anyone doing this great mod.

@NorthstarNorthstar 4 года назад
Good professional vid editing. 1) The black glue is butyl rubber. A heat gun and metal scraper will get most of it off. Then go back and scrape it to a thinner coat & it'll be fine. 2) Putting in a new head unit with more power really does necessitate thicker wires. Man, I'm struggling with that right now. I like this initial idea of plug-n-play with sound deadening. A good way to cheaply upgrade. Happy Trails!

Thanks for the work you put into making your videos. I've learned tons and you take the time to add humor, which makes them much more enjoyable to watch ! I have a question regarding the 6x9 rockfords and the brackets. Did you have any issues with holes lining up on speaker to bracket ? you didn't show the 6x9 in the video. I checked and mine are the correct ones and same that you used. It looks like im gonna have to make the holes in the speaker a little bigger. Thanks for all you do, you've got a great thing going here. Semper Fi
@Tacomaholic
@Tacomaholic 3 года назад
Thanks so much Kevin! If you are having issues with the holes lining up perfectly you can insert the bolts through the speaker holes with the speaker sitting off of the speaker bracket a little bit, that way you can line the bolts up with the holes then just slowly tighten each bolt a little at a time until the speaker is flush.

This video was awesome! Thank you so much. I have a 2015 and did a full Rockford and Subaru tweeter install this weekend and thanks to you it was a breeze and sounds incredible! I found with my 2015 with the white cover plate on the tweeter harness if you just pop the the back in the center with a flat head it just quickly comes off safely and will pop back in with out all of the maneuvering. Also removing the two center pins on the tweeter harness if you just use a small flat head towards the back and lift up the two back catches the pins will slide out much easier with out catching but do hold the harness with pliers and pull cables with your hand. Your videos are awesome!

As an FYI, there is a small hole in the top of the mounting bracket that can be used to route the speaker wires from speaker to connector. No need to cut a hole in the grommet. Connector will connect on the outside of the door in case you need to disconnect it later.
@BMMEC2009
@BMMEC2009 4 года назад
Plus the connector on the inside of the door instead of between the door card and the metal, might be something for the power window to get caught on. My 09 has the JBL system. So I haven't checked for a speaker upgrade yet.

Ditto! You explained the exact purpose of the sheet. What was your reason for not re-installing it? Pick up a roofing sealant tube from the local big box store or Wallyworld if you need to reseal the plastic. If you need to replace the sheet as well, pick up some construction Bisqueen or a roll of painters plastic mask at the same time. Anyway, just my two cents after having to remake numerous door weather seals for restorations back in the day. Great channel and awesome job on all the videos! You, my friend, are going to be a MAJOR influencer on YT. Now go make one for head unit upgrade and amp install! Yes...yes...yes...!!!!!

The only suggestion I would have is maybe rotate the rear speaker so that highs are not getting slammed into a soft surface (the seat) I know it's a budget upgrade, but that may help squeeze every last bit out of it.

Another great video Brian good job! I have virtually the same set up in my truck and run it with xav-ax 100 head unit. They have newer models of this unit now. I also have 210 ounce kicker comp RT subs shallow mount and a ported box as well behind must rear seats I know that’s probably not an option for you but it does sound killer! The sound system is basically plug-and-play minus the subs if you want links I could provide them Foria the head unit has Apple CarPlay and all the awesome stuff that you would probably want in a modern vehicle. It also provides about 50 W of power from the head unit so it gives you a decent little boost in performance as well from the stock head unit

Tacomaholic Here is a link to the 3 models available for the head unit I have the XAV AX 100 which is the first generation of the head unit but the 1000 is basically the same thing I have with a few additional features. They are actually getting ready to come out with the XAVAX7000 which will actually add 100 W of power and is actually powerful enough to power our subs directly from a head unit which is crazy. I recently just got a Toyota Corolla in addition to my Tacoma because it guzzles gas as you know LOL. This is so not a tacoma ... but it will make sense once you read it lol I replaced all of the speakers on my 95 Celica ... and I added Boom Mats to each speaker. Boom mats are speaker baffles that protect against moisture and dust and also reduce speaker vibration. When I get around to replacing the speakers on my 2015 Tacoma, I'm adding the Boom Mats to my setup. 😊

Great videos, keep it going, just a curious note, the Toyota speakers actually have no magnet, is an upgraded version of piezo electro tunnel, that uses two coils one reverse than the other and create its own magnet in real time, cool concept but the sound is not the best, little limited by the low frequencies.

If you sound deaden the inside part of the door, close up all the holes, it creates a self made speaker enclosure. Also helps keep the door panel from creating rattles when the volume is turned up.
@Tacomaholic

I gotta say, if you are looking for a subwoofer that can be loud but still sounds great JL Audio is the way to go. I have 2 JL 10W3V3’s on a JL JX1000/1 d amplifier and they sound amazing. Also went with the taco tunes plug and play stuff with the Image Dynamixs 6.5 component speakers in the front and coaxial 6.5 in the rear. Powered by taco tunes 400 watt 4 channel amp. Very loud when you turn it all the way up, but also has very good sound quality

I installed JBL speakers, they make a great aftermarket speaker. JBL 9638s Their 2.3-ohm impedance and their ludicrously high 94dB sensitivity makes them a solid contender for replacement speakers. The clarity of the stock JBL system is crazy now. And there is not a lot of volume loss due to the ohm difference. 4 ohm as most speakers are were out of the question. Too much loss.
