Kind of ridiculous to even have to do that so often in something that is supposed to be built for these types of road conditions/weather/water etc.. I’ve never had these rust issues with the several Hondas I’ve owned. Panel rust sure, but not this crazy frame/various metal parts rust.

@@MrRedHotChiliMan I hear you loud and clear! the classic Toyota parts coating... Toyota must've figured out the body panel rust issues because the Gen2 is almost 20 years on the road and I have yet to see panel rott, especially tailgate and rear wheelhouse fender area. I did see a Gen2 tailgate rotted out along the bottome in Wisconsin somewhat recently BUT! it may have resulted from other damages because the truck was a bit roughed up looking

Does washing the underside once a week help preventing salt-rust?
@LAactor
@LAactor Год назад
would be better daily with just a spray down and water soak. the salt lives in the air. better to use oil based spray to protect as a barrier. fluid film, or krown make good options
@efil4kizum
@efil4kizum Год назад
@@LAactor salt in the air does that in that short amount of time? I don't live near salty ocean or the gulf so IDK and am curious as a cat it would seem they parked it in the seawater or drove through puddles of seawater routinely for that bad of corrosion
@drawbridge611
@drawbridge611 Год назад
Yes it will. But the new “pickle juice” liquid that’s replaced solid salt in many areas, including mine, is FAR more corrosive. And it sticks to metal like glue. During winter I try not to drive in that stuff at all. But if I absolutely have to, I hose off the entire underside of the truck (‘13 Taco 2TR-FE) including front and rear suspensions as soon as I get home, if the temp is above 32. Also the wheel wells and kick panels. And the factory holes in the frame, too, because if salt or pickle juice gets in there, the frame will rust from the inside out, and then by the time you notice a problem it’ll be too late. If the temp is 32 or lower, I’ll wait until the next above 32 day. Believe me, it works. After 10 years, I have almost no frame rust. When I went in for my frame recall, all the techs had to do was hit a few rusty welds with that anti-rust goo they use.

This truck is either from somewhere else or this was driven frequently on the beach. There is a beach close to where this truck came from you can drive on the beach. I've seen tons of old Toyota trucks in CA coastal towns, and OR costal towns with clean frames. They are all over the place. A lot of people are saying fluid film but woolwax when properly applied stays on much better.
@VainakhQuranites
@VainakhQuranites Год назад
Woolwax is better than Fluid Film in that it is harder to wash off, however, it doesn't creep as well as Fluid Film. Surface Shield on the other hand creeps deep and lasts longer than both Fluid Film.

@efil4kizum Год назад
@@VainakhQuranites i want to try some of that surface shield and give it a go! i agree with WW not being very 'fluid creep' in the wintertime especially well below freezing it stiffens up quite a bit, especially the HV grade product

Is this truck in the years where Toyota replaced the frames? This looks like it’s more than just close to the beach. If it isn’t, it was drivin on the beach and left afterwards. This is mid west level rust if this isn’t a bad frame from Toyota.

@MrRedHotChiliMan
@MrRedHotChiliMan Год назад
@@KendrasEdge757 no it was later models too, I bought an 08 Tacoma 2+ years ago that had the frame replaced in 2019 under recall. Ridiculous for these trucks if you ask me. But I’m glad mine has a good frame now! I got burned on a 2002 4Runner the first round.. before I knew it was a huge issue with these frames.
@KendrasEdge757
@KendrasEdge757 Год назад
@@MrRedHotChiliMan what’s more crazy is how they’ve been handling it. Some they replace the frames and others they won’t. I bought a 21 4Runner TRD ORP about 3.5 months ago and I get the frames coated on my trucks & im in southeast VA, but they still salt the roads in winter when we get some “snow”. Definitely worth it anywhere they do or if ya drive on the beach. Did you buy the 4Runner new and had that happen or get it used?
@MrRedHotChiliMan

@@KendrasEdge757 I bought it used, and didn’t really do my homework the first time around. Amen. My 2009 was one of those that might have gotten a replacement frame had I known about it when I bought it used. As it is I have an on-going project of dealing with the rust systematically. So far I have had a plate welded where the rust was the worst for the frame (see: front passenger quadrant), have coated the bed and bought a nice cover, changed the Rear bumper and support, and begun to hand-paint with anti-rust coating. At my age I plan for this to be the last vehicle I will ever buy so I am making it something of a "project car". (well....everybody needs a hobby, right?😂)

@MrRedHotChiliMan Absolutely! Thats why I sorta have to play games in the back of my head with thius stuff. For instance, I remember the headlight lenses going for years before they started to corrupt from sun exposure. Now, the lenses that I just replaced a couple of years back are in bad need of treatment or replacement.
