you will damage the bearing like that. you should press it into the plate first hitting the bearing outer race only then you can bang it with the pipe on the inner race onto the shaft. that bearing is not a thrust bearing and will get damaged
Good video, but just a just a few notes. Measuring the ABS ring depth will render a few different readings if measured from the wheel bearing side seals as these are rubber coated and not a machined surface. Toyota recommends the axle hub as a reference. After washing the axle tube and inner seal with brake cleaner (prior to axle re-installation) you should re-lube the inner seal. The axel tube also has an inner step that gives the proper depth for the seal when fully seated. Just make sure as The Other Guy is implying, don't press it in so hard as to distort the seal.
Just did it 4 days later without a press or that tool. I pulled the axle out like you did took the snap ring off and held the backing plate hitting the axle repeatedly up and down on a sheet of plywood so the retainer can pop out. I didn't have the abs tone ring on mine.
@@garybrady7245 unfortunately I didn't record it at the time if you can visualize how I mentioned to do it in my previous comment it works.. upon installing you can use some old exhaust pipe I had some laying around just have to be wide enough to fit over the axle and press the new bearing on the axle once you do it the first time it gets easier took me about a hour from start to finish.. I took breaks in between
Thank you, you kept it simple & to the point without a lot of excessive talk...you explained it well as you moved along on this repair......question: you said the pipe/tub was a 2” but you didn’t mention it’s length.....Frankie, New England
If you have ABS you do not need to cut the ABS gear when doing a axle bearing, you actually want to save that for when you put everything back together. Unless it is damage then yes cut it and replace it. Best rule of thumb, put it back the way you took it apart. I have an 84’ Toyota pickup with a complete axle out of a 2000 TRD Tacoma and I just did the wheel bearings. Even though I don’t have ABS, I reinstalled the the ABS gear for proper clearances to the seal, because that is how it came stock.
great video! I have done tons of axle bearings but I always find with the advent of youtube a quick video couldnt hurt to watch! I love your in the field approach keep on getting her done!
Great video as usual. Is there any chance you can provide part numbers for the parts used, or what parts you recommend. I normally use only Toyota parts, but maybe you can recommend other brands you've had good experience with, or which ones to avoid. Thanks
This is what I use. NACHI is the brand that was on my OEM bearing. So far no issues Look at this on eBay rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F252501607281
I suggest you grease the last retainer and install the axle assembly and spin axle a few revolutions .remove axle assembly and check how far seal is on the retainer.always measure from. Outer part of axle tube to seal and to center of abs sensor hole .now measure from wheel bearing to center of tone ring and center of retainer ,press tone ring to desired measurement and then retainer to desired measurement use the grease on retainer to check seal point on retainer
Nyob zoo tij lauj! As always another very informative video. So thank you! Now my question is how many ton press are you using and how strong of a press is needed? I’ve got a 2003 Sequoia with bad front bearings which I understand is similar to the 1st gen Tundra’s. I’m thinking about getting a 12 ton press from Harbor Freight. Will that be sufficient?
Did you have shaking from the rear at highway speeds with your bad bearings? Mine has 57k miles, new tires and rotors and still have a shake. Thinking it is the bearings
How do you mean shaking? I can think of a few way the rear can shake like for example, shaking via unbalanced wheel, shaking because your drive shaft center support bearing on bad. If the wheel bearing is bad, you hear or feel grinding
There is a custom tool made by a eBay seller called Donald-the-Bonald his tool has MCSpecial Inc as the brand he makes these tools in his shop in Omaha Nebraska tool helps remove the tone rings and the retainer collars i can get you the information id you want to buy the tool he also makes the adapters for 2nd and 3rd gen Tacoma and also land cruisers and it works for 4runners and hilux and the pickups and t100s
I have a 90K 2001 Seqouia and have a small leak into the bottom brake shoe adjuster. I hope its only the inner seal. They only sell bearing and hub assembly and I cant tell if it has outer seal from pictures/diagrams.
The Other Guy, that’s what I thought but all the vdo I saw on RU-vid about replacing the rear wheel bearings are on the driver rear sides. That got me 🤔
Did you get the kitt from.dealer or your local auto parts store im.tryong to figure out I seen 2 collars but the kitt from my auto parts store has only 1
STOP-STOP-STOP!!! The bearing does have a lateral free-play but NEVER vertical (up-down) free-play: Use the toyota bearing puller tool (ebay) and a press to remove the retainer, ABS ring and bearing. With the tool, you can reuse the ABS ring BUT always replace the retainer with a NEW OEM part. Replace the outer dust/water seal while the axle is out of the backing plate. Before the final assembly MAKE sure the most inbound retainer that runs on the oil seal is at the CENTER of the oil seal lip. Use the Sharpie method invented by T4R.org Community: Watch toyota axle bearing replacement by Timmy the tool man.
Personally, I wouldn’t beat the shit out of that bearing like he did. I would have pressed it in and as he stated in an earlier response to the same question, his press wasn’t tall enough. Well, this is where a machine shop would have been paid to press everything off and the new parts pressed back on.
Uncle, I am hmong too. I was wondering where you purchased the new o-ring that went on the outside of the axle housing. I dont have a dealership near me, so I was just wondering.
@@theotherguy3083 hi noticed you had 7 leaf springs most tundra have 5. On the grease issue I meant do you grease bearings like the old style or this come sealed. Also do you bleed lines same way as if it didn't have abs never bleeded abs break lines. Thank you great job
These bearings come sealed. But you need to grease the inner axle seal. This is how I built my spring set. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wyVLCTv96NI.html
@@theotherguy3083 thank you interesting video on the break bleeding I got the abs do I need to disconnect anything never bleeded abs system thank you for your informative videos is good to see people with a lot of common sense and craftiness.
It depends. If there is nothing wrong with the diff or wheel bearing where shards of metal are inside the axle housing then you don't need drain the oil. However, if your axle bearing is shredded, you'll need to drain the axle and diff and then clean everything inside. It by itself will not leak out if you are just removing the seals.
I’ve got the roaring noise coming from the rear, however I took it to get it fixed and they said it’s not the wheel bearing because when they jacked it up, the wheel had no play in it. They are saying I need a new rear end ? So could it only have play in it after you pull the axle ?
I just had this job done on my 2007 Toyota tundra and now I have a grunting noise could it be that Something was put on the even or is it inside my differential with the driveshaft connects
@@Troll814 yes. Here is why. Inside the axle housing itself are oil shrouds located on each end of the axles. It is designed to keep the oil from sloshing back and forth when the truck is traveling on uneven roads. They are made of thin sheets of metal and can be damaged and knocked out of place if the mechanic was not careful when installing the axle into the axle housing. If this is so, the axle shroud inside may have been knocked off its perch and is now resting on the axle itself causing the grinding sound you are hearing. Only way to find out is to remove the diff and axle and physically check.
Is this what Scotty Kilmer was hooting and hollering about? Saying this was the design flaw that makes the F-150 better somehow? Had me nervous that guy.
i WOULD NOT MEASURE FROM THE EXCITER RING TO THE BEARING SIDE BECAUSE THAT CAN MOVE ON YOU, I WOULD MEASURE THE OTHER DIRECTION TO THE END OF THE AXLE.
I would not hammer on that bearing with a pipe on the inner Side of the bearing could seize the bearing always want to press on the outer diameter of a bearing
@@theotherguy3083 yes you said in your video remove the Abs clips and sensor and it doesn’t it have on my tundra and when I order the complete rear cv axle it would not fit because of the ring with the teeth and no I’m still driving with bad bearing 🤦🏽♂️
