You may have seen different routers as being marketed towards "multimedia" or "gaming" purposes, but what does that actually mean? Jack takes a look at one from each camp to explain what features they have in common, and what distinguishes them from each other.

Well, wireless is the future. Right now, unless you absolutely need every ounce of download speed (even then wireless is about 95% speed of wired) or you absolutely cannot drop signal once (even then wireless never really drops anymore) you can stay wired. But if you're set in your ways, go you.

to continue the kitchen representation, you got to keep in mind this: the c3200 is tripple band, so it's a bit like not only having 4 chefs in the kitchen, but also a second kitchen with 4 chefs.... while the c3150 is like having 4chefs that work faster at individual dishes... also, isn't the c3200 the only ac3200 router supporting mu mimo? it usually only comes with ac2400, ac3100 and ac5300

To gamers Mb/s are quite pointless over a certain threshold. What counts is ping time. So you should have made a comparison testing ping times responsiveness ingame while other devices are making many requests and maybe downloading multiple torrents. That way we'd know if the word gaming router means anything

so a 3200 should be good for me. My ping is now around 40 to 60 with a stock router of the provider. should be less with the 3200
@S1B1C1
@S1B1C1 7 лет назад
it depends if could be the line to your house.. some router can be the issue or it could be the line to your house. i would recommend doing a ping test to your router in cmd then after do a cmd ping test to google if you type in ( ping www.google.com -t ) it will do it until you stop it ( Ctrl + C ) if you ping test your router ip ( ping xxx.xxx.xxx -t ) i am not 100% if that 100% accurate it is in cmd but its worth a shot. you might find that the router fine but the line can be faulty. you could try rebooting the router to see if that help if not talk to your isp. also dont use pingtest.net or speedtest. if your doing gaming and gaming is 1st try www.dslreports.com/speedtest for BufferBloat and to see if your internet is good for gaming.

I NEED HELP! My broadband is BT Infinity 1 (Fibre Optic) with speeds of 52Mbps. My router is the standard router from BT which is the BT Hub 5. I live in a council flat which has thick walls. This is a problem as the router is in the living room which is opposite my bedroom which has my Mac Mini (Late 2014) however, WiFi connection is terrible at times when if you close the living room door connection is very week with speeds being under 5Mbps

aside from the antenna difference, are there any others? I'm using the 5ghz band on the c3150 (im the only one on it) using a hardwired gtx 1080 system and cant get a perfect 1080p stream in the moonlight app. Is there a gaming feature that would really make a difference in 1080p?

Okay, I know this is am old video, but I really hope you can reply and answer my question. I can't find it anywhere :\ so here it goes! If I have 20down/3up kinda fast where I live, but it's slow for me :( but its expensive here $55 a month for just that. In my house there are 10-12 devices connected fam of 4, but we have 2 iPhones each or 2 androids each a laptop, Apple TV and ps4. If I were to buy an ac2600 Mimo would it help out if I were to put 5down and 2up on ps4 and with and give everyone else the 15down 1up that's left and not lag anymore in my games?

If your going to be gaming it's better to use a cable if you can. There are also things called power-line adapters that plug into a wall and transfers the data through already existing circuits. The problem with these is if your electrical circuits are old it can make the speeds slower. But my speeds are much better than wireless and the ping times dropped alot. I went from 40 ping to around 12 ping. I recommended looking into some of those.

Or you could just by a Ubiquity AP and combine it with an Edgerouter lite or a Pfsense box that you built yourself and get way more features and performance for less money. The performance of a router for Gaming can't be measured by how many antennas it has.

Do not waste money on 1024QAM, currently no client device supports it. While it is better to have a positive feature than to not have one, 1024QAM should never be a deciding factor. The more complex the modulation, the shorter the distance at which that modulation can be used. with 1024QAM, it is only effective within close distances and largely in the same room, thus you are essentially using it in situations where Ethernet would be better suited. The market has largely moved onto 160MHz channel width instead, which doubles the throughput without increasing the modulation complexity, thus the speed benefits of 160MHz channel width, is experienced across the full range of the router. Currently no client devices support 160MHz channel width either, but routers such as the Netgear R7800 will offer that. If you are going to spend a ton of money, then the AD7200 is a better option, as for same room communications, we will see mobile devices make use of it, and that will offer close to its full speed since it does not have to deal with interference (60GHz signals can't go through walls as well as most other solid objects).

Gaming router can be described in one word. "Bullshit" people need to know that they won't get a higher internet speed or stable connection, it depends on your ISP and its plans. The only benefit you get from these routers is a good fast local network for streaming movies or games and you can find all the needed features in any router, not above 100$.

Did you really answer the question about the difference between the Multimedia and Gaming routers? You mentioned the technical theoretical differences between the routers, but not why one is Multimedia and the other is Gaming. I was expecting latency benchmarks. See, this is why LinusTechTips is better. Should've compared it to D-Link and Linksys offerings in the same price or performance bracket.
