Hi Kim, I just wanted to say congratulations on your channel! I'm currently studying to become CISSP certified, and it's definitely a challenge. I found your channel while I was looking for a quick setup for my friend's device. I personally don't trust anything but pfSense, Sophos, or MikroTik. I was wondering if you could do a packet inspection using wireshark on the TP-Link just to see what kind of data is being sent. I think it would be awesome if you could perform tests like this on different devices and routes in the future. It would be really interesting to see what you find! Thanks for all your great content!

Thank you for making this video. I was looking for a system to replace my router and extender and someone told me about the mesh system which is all new to me. I saw this product at Costco on sale and came home to research on RU-vid which brought me to your video. I was impressed with the thoroughness of your video that I subscribed to your channel. I don't know much about the technology, but the price is right compared to other brands so I may still go with it. Would a VPN solve the security problem?
@kimandtech
@kimandtech 6 месяцев назад
@showbiznow Thank you so much for the kind comment and sharing your story! If set up correctly, yes, it can "hide" the traffic from your router since the data since it's encrypted. Thus, making it unreadable by your router. However, you now have a new security/privacy concern that your VPN can see your traffic. Thus, if you're going to using a VPN, please use one that is "safe".

*Kim* Hello, and great video, by the way. *Fast Roaming:* The feature that allows wireless devices to switch connection automatically to different Deco nodes is disabled by default. The option to enable it is below. Load Deco app -> More (located in bottom right of app) -> Advanced -> Fast Roaming -> Enable slider TP-Link's decision to disable that feature by default is a strange one.
@kimandtech
@kimandtech Год назад
Thank you for the kind compliment and sharing. I don't recall this feature, and we already returned the Deco. However, I think the reason Fast Roaming is disabled by default because "some of ... wireless clients may fail to connect to the Deco Wi-Fi when the Fast Roaming feature is turned on." Nice recap. I just bought this mesh yesterday after seeing your first video. Didn't watch this one until today, but I have gained the mindset that any router seller that requires an app or internet setup to get it online is always a security compromise. They insist on control and or harvesting of data as part of their system. But the reality is that the internet itself is a massive security risk for even the most cautious of users, so it comes down to backstopping the risks with contingencies and by doing business only with companies that depend upon their reputation remaining intact. I just wish a standard web interface was available for managing these, but with a limited budget of cash and patience, I can't say they have not delivered well despite those caveats. Also, they are just $269 at Costco now!
@kimandtech
@kimandtech 4 месяца назад
@ksnax Thank you for sharing. Agreed that the Internet is security risk on its own! I wouldn’t mind the security/privacy concern of the Deco sending my traffic to its 3rd party antivirus vendor if I had joined their HomeShield protection program because it makes total sense since the 3rd party antivirus vendor needs to see my traffic to manage what is secure or not secure. Or if TP-Link are transparent - explicitly stating it - and maybe even give the ability to opt out. Besides that, I completely think the Deco works great!

@kimandtech
@kimandtech Год назад
Thank you so much for the kind compliment!! Completely agreed, they work GREAT! I haven't tried reaching out to TP-Link support to address this concern. From the Reddit post and XDA's article, both say that TP-Link support told them that with the firmware update, the sending of traffic should have been fixed. However, that didn't fix it for them, and I'm on the latest firmware update. This is NOT a big deal for most, and especially not a big deal at all for consumers who are using their security subscriptions. I just can't keep them because I'm in Security, and it would be very contradicting and hypocritical of me to keep them knowing this in the back of my mind, which will eat away at my ethics - if that make any sense. LOL Also, I'm still able to return them to Costco before it's too late. Hahahaha

Great video, what is your stance on the remote management that it cannot be disabled and accessed from anywhere? Also the login credentials sitting on TP Link servers?
@kimandtech
@kimandtech 3 месяца назад
@dannschlueter4405 Thanks for the comment. Want to confirm I understand the first question correctly. Do you mean being able to see your network from the TP-link Deco app from anywhere? As for the second question, I honestly don't have much concern about this since a login credential is needed for almost all the mesh system app, at least the ones I've tried to far. The reason being is because I think of it like if I have a Nest WiFi pro, I'd use my Google account, which to me is way riskier as it's tied to my emails rather than just a single independent account for the TP-Link Deco app. Of course I can create a separate Google account just for the Nest WiFi pro, but that's besides the main point. Unfortunately, we cannot control if the TP-Link databases leaked our credentials as it can always happens along with any databases. We can only do what we can, which I normally like to change my password every time I set up a new router. Now that I'm thinking about it, I should also practice changing my complex password maybe once or twice a year just to be safe as well. Thanks for giving me the idea!

That is unfortunate. I purchased this device from Costco as well and I am glad I came across your video, as security is also a big concern for me. Would you be able to block the data being sent to third party using the DNS service you subscribe to block the connection to those sites?
@kimandtech
@kimandtech 10 месяцев назад
Yes, you can try blocking it using the DNS service. There have been 2 recommended ways: (1) Setting up a firewall, which is more complicated (2) Block outbound traffic using the web interface of the router. I didn't get a chance to test blocking with the DNS service or with the web interface HAHAHA and had to return the product to stay within the return policy. @kimandtech

Thanks!! They do work great! I was sad to return it last week. I think TP-Link is aware because they told the 2 writers of the XDA's article and the Reddit post that the firmware update should have fixed the problem, but it hasn't, and it's been over a year. If you're paying for the TP-Link's security system - HomeShield - then you have nothing to worry about because you're paying it to look at your traffic.

I really like how detailed you were in this video. I haven’t used NextDNS in maybe 3-4 years but correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t there a way to block the Avira domain completely with NextDNS? I can’t remember if they allow custom domain blocking or not. I would imagine if that was capable it may cause their app to work incorrectly though. That’s a shame they don’t offer the Home Shield for free like they do for Home Care on this mesh system. I’m pretty technically inclined though and there are methods to have this type of protection through self hosting app/services. Thanks for the review though!

Awww, thanks for the kind comment! 🙏 I'm currently using the Netgear Orbi AX5400, but we ran into an issue this week with it being super slow. When I checked the app, there was a firmware update. I ran the update and forced the router and its satellite units to reboot, which didn't fix the problem. I had to manually reboot all the units. I was quite annoyed because this happened at around 9 PM. HAHAHA The TP-Link Deco was the only that was working smoothly in terms of connectivity and consistency out of the ones I've tried - Nest WiFi Pro and Netgear Orbi. I'm planning to buy the TP-Link Deco with Wi-Fi 7 next year and test a few ways to block outgoing traffic to see if it will work as intended. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to test it before returning this one. 😓😢 If you're curious, here are some ways that you can try blocking outgoing traffic, which have been recommended by other commentors as well: (1) Firewall - too complicated for home setup but you're free to try (2) DNS block (3) Use the config web page of the router to block the outgoing traffic If you do try any of them, please stop by again and share your experience. Always love to hear others' experiences. 😁 Sorry for the long response. >.

Kim, thank you for your review of the TP-Link Deco XE5300 Mesh Wi-Fi Router. You mentioned that you returned it because of TP-Link's of security issues and couldn't trust their routers because of this. In the comments below this video, you wrote a couple times that you are planning to buy the TP-Link Deco with Wi-Fi 7 next year and test a few ways to block outgoing traffic to see if it will work as intended. Do you really think TP-Link will fix this issue since they haven't in previous firmware updates for the Deco XE5300 Mesh Wi-Fi Router? Thanks you.
@kimandtech
@kimandtech 9 месяцев назад
Hi There! Very good question! No, I don’t think TP-Link will fix this issue, which is why I’m planning on purchasing their newer model next year and test the blocking of outgoing IP to see if it will work with the different methods since I really did like the performance and consistency the XE5300. I’m currently using the NETGEAR Orbi AX5400 and there was a recent hiccup, and it’s only been a little bit over a month or not even a month yet (can’t completely recall 😆), so I’m not too pleased about it. How I see it is that it’s harder to fix performance and consistency because they may relate to the capabilities of the hardware versus fixing security if I can fix the security concern by blocking a domain or IP. Hope it makes more sense now on why I want to purchase from TP-Link again. 🙂

Mmm, do you think the trade off of this traffic breach vs convenience of set up, control and performance is worth it? Are you any worse off or just philosophically opposed to traffic you haven't consented to???

There's no apparent deficiency that can adversely affect you in terms of speed and connectivity that I can tell. I'd recommend try blocking the traffic with the router itself from the portal. I didn't try it with TP-Link Deco when I briefly had it because I was short on time. I think it should work, and it's something I want to try when I buy a different TP-Link Deco to test because I'm not liking the Netgear Orbi we currently have, but it's past the return date now. 😥LOL

😆🤣 I'll skip the call, but I can offer you the following...😉 If your home is larger than 2,200sq ft. and you like granular settings, then I don't recommend the Nest WiFi Pro.

@TheArchitect101 is this model from TP-Link being sold in the EU? If yea, then they may be implicated under GDPR.

What about WPS? Also since you are CISSP rated, why the heck do you not have a firewall ? You could just block that traffic...And you will also notice you need to block the Roku traffic calling home. Check your crappy Samsung TV traffic also.

Appreciate for your input as everyone is entitled for their own opinions, but this review is to create awareness for the average consumers as most don't normally set up firewall at home nor know how to block traffic. Thanks for stopping by.

Consumer routers are only equipped with very BASIC built in firewalls. It may have SPI enabled but this is enough for a home network. Just make sure UPnP and remote management is disabled, turn off Ping from WAN, and you should be fine. I would also make use of their client or AP isolation for IoT devices or devices you cannot trust. If you desire more granularity in control then I would suggest a step up such as a Ubiquiti router with VLAN capability.

@@kimandtech In regard to the suggestion to add music to your videos, there is nothing more annoying to me than background music. The reason people come to watch is for the information you provide. I am a newbie to your videos and this one is excellent as is, very thoughtful and informative. I am subscribing and will use your channel as one of my tech sources. If you don’t know what device is making the requests (the router or the phone) or what the data is- then idk how to take you serious. You are making statements about things with no proof of what is happening. If this concerns you then I suggest you never look at how much is shared with apple, Microsoft, google or any other big player. Did you even identify the source of the dns request? How about doing that and maybe *if* you really wanted to be serious do a pcap on that device and try to determine what type of connection it is and how much data it is. It could literally be the iOS app checking for new data like EVERY APP ON YOUR DEVICES ALREADY DOES. This is paranoia based on some dns requests and tbh makes me question your claim of having a security cert. I mean sheesh you could run a local dns on a raspberry pi but apparently you needed to search for a solution? Cmon. Maybe use the fancy cert you have and mitm the connection to see what is actually in the packets payload before sounding alarm bells and getting folks riled up. The darn thing could be looking for a firmware update but you wouldn’t know.

Thank you for taking the time and sharing your thoughts. You are correct that I don't know what the packet is transferring. However, please let me clarify with the following: (1) If it's pinging TP-Link, then I can accept that it's trying to look for a firmware update, but it's not. It's pinging Avira, which is their 3rd-party security software. (2) Thank you for considering my security cert as fancy. However, the CISSP is more of an overall understanding from a management point, not the nitty gritty of networking. Thus, I'm still learning the finer details of networking security as I go. (3) Agreed that Microsoft and Apple have lots of tracking - even for each app. Since I own an iPhone, I do go into each app and disable what I don't need. It's annoying, but not much I can do about it if I'm going to use an iPhone. If you don't agree with my clarifications, that's totally fine - to each their own.
