There is no need to say you need a POE capable switch to power the Unifi, you can simply use the POE+ injector (separately sold for like 12 Euro) that comes with a power cable direct to a wall socket.
@212MPH
@212MPH 2 года назад
You dont get many power sockets in ceilings or up poles.
@selphie99
@selphie99 2 года назад
@@212MPH You don't need power sockets in ceilings either, you can put the POE injector near a wall socket near the switch or anywhere and use a long ethernet cable that carrying power and data from the injector and go with it to the ceiling, same as POE capable switch.

@@212MPH Speak of yourself, I am a Senior Network Engineer with more than 8 years of experience working in big networks of government and Tier 1 ISP's like Vodafone working on the backbone core network Internet Exchange that connect between countries, I usually work with more complex fiber optics that carry 400 Gbit/s of traffic, this is pretty basic stuff, I have this setup at my home, POE injector I place it in the store closet where the fiber cable and electricity of the house coming, near the main router with 1 meter CAT6 cable to the main switch/router and power cable to wall socket for power and the other end of injector a single long 15 meters cable CAT6 that carry power + Data to the ceiling, it works perfect for me, this is a cost effective way because injector cost only 10 Euros while buying a POE switch compare to non POE switch can be hundred of Euros different.

@@selphie99 You are correct here Sir. It seems like Gerry has never installed a network outside his home. LOL.. The injector is always best placed wherever the server room is.. This guy is wondering where the power is in the ceiling.. ? SMH lol

Thanks for the great video! Now is it interesting to compare Zyxel with TP Link =)

A useful comparison , but I think you got too hung up of the PoE question. Seems to me there is only one killer difference here - the 2.5G ethernet capability of the TP-Link. But as you didn't test with multi-clients we can't see how much of an advantage it is in practice. I think you made way too much of the fact that the Unifi is PoE-only, and really misleading to say it is a 'big deal' and supposedly a 'show-stopper' if you don't have a PoE switch.. With the TP-link you get a wall wart, but as you said, there may not be power-over-ceiling, and then you are stuck with the length of the adaptor cord. With the Ubiquiti you can just use a low cost Ubiquiti PoE injector (which you chucked in as a very minor afterthought) - these usually come with the retail pack anyway, or can be bought very cheaply, and they are very nicely made, look good and have wall mount options. But the killer point is that they can go anywhere betweem the AP and the switch, even right at the switch wher there is almost certainly power available. I'd far rather have that option in the box than a wall wart. You made much of liking the huge ventilation on the TP-link - most likely needed because of the much higher possible dissipation of the 2.5G ethernet interface, but likely to allow a lot more dust, bugs, smoke particles, steam etc into the unit, quite possibly shortening its life. The Ubiquiti devices are almost sealed and won't suffer from poorer air quality. The extra size of the TP-link and its sharp edges are also much more obtrusive on 8-foot ceilings domestically, though probably not so much of an issue in a commercial setting.

Which is best for a high-density network with over 500 concurrent clients?
@Rosscoff2000
@Rosscoff2000 2 года назад
Neither of those would be good for that - one of the Ubiquiti HD models would be better suited to handling a crowd. Even better would be the XG models, which are meant for that sort of scene, but of course cost a lot more.
@212MPH

TP Links are far easier to setup, especially if your meshing them, with the ability to manage multiple mesh sites from your phone. Firmware upgrades are also much easier to manage, I only use ubiquiti for their point to point links. If you setting large mesh networks in commercial buildings you would nearly always use PoE. How many ubiquity nodes can you mesh together on a single network? Just my opinion.

what about 2.4ghz radios? I think I read something about the UniFi only doing WiFi N on the 2.4GHz

I heard that somewhere too but have noticed it in my performance testing. I suspect if I had a detailed wifi analysis tool maybe I could see what type of protocol the U6 is advertising on the 2.4.

The fact that the Unifi has a metal mounting plate (that usually blocks radio) on the back makes me wonder if this access point is suitable for wall mount when the client is placed on the back of the device

Good point Marco. While I am not a wifi expert, I do know that these units (all access points) are designed with mounting direction in mind.

I heard the UniFi Access Points sometimes turn brown on the bottom because of the heat, a Metal casing or vents would be a good Idea...

@@IAmZen_007 asus routers are consumer trash with ridiculously buggy firmware. these APs are designed to handle hundreds of clients each, they are not designed for getting max speed out of single device. besides, anyone whose not a noob in networking knows wired is the way to go for max speeds.

@@teemuvesala9575 You are certainly a Unifi lover. Asus unstable firmware? Doesn't bother me because I'm running Merlin. 100 of devices simultaneously? Don’t need it and when I buy a product I want full performance but even with 1 device it’s slow. So no wheelbarrow with thin tires for me. Wired? Obviously this is better and I do, but I'm not going to be walking around with a tablet with a cable on, but maybe you do. Latest technology? Certainly not Ubiquiti, if you release AP with AX with a 1Gb uplink you are not update. But don't worry, the new Enterpise AP finally has a 2.5gb uplink… but still isn't available after so many months. A lot of blabla. Sad. I'll wait for you at the finish line... 🤣

@@IAmZen_007 Merlin or not its same buggy garbage. Its gamer oriented BS and lots of junk is sold under gaming branding. And no, I don't use Unifi. Currently got just basic TP-Link Deco X90 system with 2 units and wired backhaul between them. With Intel AX201 WiFi card I get over gigabit speeds. No need for Asus gimmickery. WiFi 6E is the biggest joke ever. Its so pointless considering WiFi 7 will be massive leap forward in speed.
