Let's take a look at the tp-link Omada solution! In this video, we go over some of the hardware that tp-link sent me, we explain SDN (Software Defined Networking), we go over the Omada software interface, and finally we compare tp-link Omada to Ubiquiti UniFi - is Omada a viable replacement for UniFi? I just completely rebuilt my outdated home lab with all TP Link Omada hardware and it has been the best experience I've had with designing and implementing vlans, mesh network, VPN, secure networks, etc.. Hands down I highly recommend this as an affordable way of getting enterprise level networking in a home environment.

Just setup my First Omada Network. 2FA is now part of the setup. I Love how easy it is to configure if your already familiar with Ubiquity’s configuration. Very similar. If you miss the 2FA... Login to your cloud account, and Click Security on the left. The 2FA Links to your Google Authenticator App Hope this puts people at ease, and gives people confidence in TP-Links commitment to security. I am impressed so far.

Not meaning to point out the obvious (And I am still watching the video so not sure if Chris mensions later in the video!) but.... Surely this is just a re-skinned UniFi controller, albeit an older version? It literally looks identical? Can only assume UBNT have sold them the software to use for themselves.... Wonder if anyone has hacked the devices to run unifi firmware, as imagine there all very similer inside also! Could save a few £££!

Chris, I'm running the Omada in a heavy use environment. 5 - EAP225, 2- TL-SG2008P, 1- TL-R605, and the OC200 controller. Not running mesh mode all hardwired, with switches fed by fiber. Its rock solid with around 55 Clients that use 60-70 percent of available bandwidth continuously. Router runs hard with 43% CPU Use and overall gateway load is averaging in the high 50%. Main reason for choosing TP-Link was price and easy product availability. In the past 3.5 months have had firmware updates so it being upgraded. I took a chance and can say im highly pleased and it was the correct choice for me. One note for people to read the recommended install practices on the R605 in the support area. If you choose to use a different Ip addressing range than the standard that is on the OC200 you might not be able to re-Adopt the router is it does a power reset. It's a firmware bug that is a real pain. I got over easy because I had a backup of the configuration via the OC200 and a thumb drive. So, just reset back to known good configuration. That has been to only issue in almost 4 months. Added security is with a Firewalla Gold.
@vincenttu3330
@vincenttu3330 3 года назад
A quick tip if you want to change the IP of the router and your OC200 is in your subnet. The default DHCP lease is 120 minutes which means your OC200 will be available again after 2 hours :) If you want to shorter the wait time, you can change the DHCP lease time before you change the router IP.

I run TP-Link switches and AP's. 5 switches, 8 AP's. (2) EAP225 outdoor and (6) EAP225 & EAP245 inside. Also use the OC200 controller. All of that hardware just runs. And runs. Performance is fine -- typically can get upwards of 500Mbps on wifi using 5Ghz if I run speed tests. But I also don't sit and run speed tests constantly. I value actual day-to-day use and reliability over dynamic benchmark tests. I don't have the need to get the newer AP's since general use with the AP's I have work just fine. Keep up the great videos.

There should be a mayor software/firmware upgrade next month, which should include 5ghz DFS channels in europe and some missing advanced features like QoS and 2FA (they even said to be working on TLS PEAP with the inbuild radius server). Would not call it fully featured without these upgrades yet. Had a few devices to review myself and had a good chance to talk to the developers, it seems they are going big on this (also having a decent support instead of a forum with more unanswered problems than answered seems to be nice). The portal is really cool, the preview actually gives a pretty good preview of what you have configured. Please review the changes after 4.3 has been released, should be a big upgrade.

An opinion form a systems guy: I tested Ubiquity, Ruckus R610 and TP link Omada (all 802.11ac) access points in a large residential setting (4 AP mesh). Each ran for about 30 days in the same environment for proper evaluation. The best value and performance was TP link, the lowest performer was Ruckus R610! Just a data point from an experimenter. TP link's latest software updates are making it only better.

Great review as always! I have a lot invested in Ubiquiti but am not always happy. Mainly I have issues with the Cloudkey Gen2 device. Mine have had issues with connectivity and the drives fail (maybe not Ubiquiti's fault). Regardless, the biggest differentiator for me is Unifi Protect. It is integrated into the platform and can all be managed from the Cloudkey. TP-Link has some great, high def, low price cameras but they don't integrate like Protect does. So for now, staying with Ubiquiti Unifi. Thanks!

I have used TP-Link in the past and was very happy with it in general. TP-Link certainly beat other consumer brands in stability. When it was time to upgrade however TP-Link fell begin for years, it is good to see they are competing again. But even on that front I am now moving to 10G ethernet and TP-Link is once again not there. My Ubiquiti gear just always works without any babysitting. The wireless access point in particular just give me a solid connection which is not the experience I have with any other consumer level access points. But Ubiquiti certainly is easy to beat on price.

Thanks so much for the in-depth look at TP-Links Omada software and how it marries to TP-Links various hardware. In my business I've used both TP-Link and Ubiquity for years My choice to use either comes down to, can I get the equipment. Lately I have been forced to purchase routers, switches, AP's, etc from whichever vendor has the product in-stock. I've even had to mix and match LAN equipment just to keep a customer going. I would like to build out a network using one vendor, management is going to be much cleaner and simpler. But will supply chain issues, that's not alway an option.

Thanks, Chris! Very informative and thorough video. Would love to see some throughput numbers and some comments on reliability of the 605 router, particularly in a dual-WAN failover LB configuration. Losing faith in the ERL3 after Ubiquiti's latest horrible firmware (v2.0.9-hotfix.1 as-of writing). Now having to reboot it every 12-24 hours now. Dual-WAN failover with VLANs is broken. Native VLAN never loses connectivity, but the routing tables for VLAN interfaces get jacked and lose connectivity. And how long have there been issues with dual-WAN? Years. Enough is enough. You listening, Ubiquiti? Stop trying to be Apple and go back to the years when your products were just rock-solid.

I've had two EAP225's since 2017, the controller (software) and EAP225-Outdoor since 2019, and the EAP235-Wall is new. The APs keep their configuration without the controller, but I don't normally run without the controller software. The EAP devices can also run stand-alone, but switching between controller mode and stand-alone mode factory resets the device (at least with the v3 controller). I ran them in standalone mode for a few years before I had enough to make setting up a permanent controller worth it.

Great review! Small correction on your pricing: you can't compare IW EAP225 with UAP-IW-HD - the first is only 100Mbps on PoE/LAN and you can see it on the map in Omada (amber line). I would replace them with TP-Link EAP-235-IW (&100) vs UAP-AC-IW ($105 - not HD version), then your budget is still $175 in favour of TP-Link. On the last note, Site-to-Site VPN is not that easy as Unifi and I hope TYP-Link will work on 'remote adoption' because adopting devices to a remote site are super hard :-(

I'm pretty late to the party but something that caught my eye on the price comparison you gave was while routers and switches are cheaper, the 2x2 aps are more expensive compared to the equivalent Unifi ap. So when building out a deployment, it only takes 3 aps for that savings to be eaten up, and any deployment larger then that unifi actually becomes more cost effective. I'm sure this was strategic, make it cheap to buy in to the universe for small deployments and shift the expense to expansion. Still an impressive lineup from tplink.

Well, all I can say is I wish I'd had this information a couple of months ago before I dropped a king's ransom in a bunch of Unifi gear. I'm not totally unhappy with it, but I kinda feel like I need a shower. I actually have a couple of TP-Link AP's and a couple of unmanaged switches, and I can say that my experience with their tech support has been pretty good. It's supported offshore but at least you can get somebody on the phone via a toll-free phone call, and like I said, all I have is some of their pre-Omada gear. We'll see how it goes. If the market for used Unifi gear doesn't get ruined by their attitude around the breach, there seems to be plenty of takers on eBay. Looking at the controller, router, and switches, Omada seemed more cost effective. However, the $99 Unifi U6-Lite is an interesting proposition. It has great performance, WiFi 6 tech, and most importantly cheap. The cheapest WiFi 6 AP in TPlink lineup is $162. If we consider on bigger deployment say more than 5 APs, then Unifi is on par with Omada. The bigger the deployment is, U6-Lite makes more sense in term of costs. It's down to stability and feature I guess. Unifi used to be quite stable, but not lately. Omada also has POE scheduling.

Our company has installed over a thousand TPlink WiFi devices and under 500 Ubiquiti. We make very little money on Ubiquiti because of service issues. Frequent UniFi controller updates cause the network to fail. Maybe we should have used cloud-keys. Whenever a different field tech tries to implement an update, adoption often fails. Surely it is operator error, but we don't know where to get proper training. YT training hasn't worked. On the other hand, we have been very successful with Omada , using the OC200 controller, and EAP245 APs. No adoption problems here and TPlink support is much better than Ubiquiti. Since we provide Internet to condominiums, time-shares, and resorts, APs are a bad choice and WiFi routers help connect a private WiFi printer. Our typical customer might have 10 devices. For a 100 unit building, over 1000 addresses and a very robust gateway (class B) is needed when implementing APs. But if clients are connected to a WiFi router, gateway is much simpler and WiFi printer easy. I love the Omada controller cloud access. You can see how many clients per AP, traffic volume per AP, most active AP & client, and much more. We also get a push alert when an AP goes down.

Would the r605 handle 1000 devices?
@brois841
@brois841 3 года назад
Two points: 1. The difference in size of AP's probably has to do with the size of antennas/gain. The U6-LR is a beast in size as well. I think speed is relevant to us prosumers, but in a business setting it's total supported devices/throughput. (That's the excuse we used to make for Ubiquity when it didn't fare well against competition ;)) 2. Even as you were showing the website, TP-Link actually gives you an 800-number to call. That alone puts it lightyears ahead of UniFi as far as support is concerned. Ever tried to chat with support, while also working on your network? That's always fun when you have to reboot or debug something. Anyway, from my perspective, I have UniFi gear. I love the aesthetics, but I wish they spent as much time on providing quality software - their firmware and management software is constantly riddled with bugs (one update completely locked me out and I had to factory reset). They need to have more multi-gig support. Every time they come out with new hardware there's always something missing. For example, U6-LR only having a gig connection is a joke. Most of their switches are 1gig, etc. For the premium they charge, they should offer top-end hardware. Support sucks!
@brois841

I've found all-in-one WiFi routers always die after a few years. I've just upgraded to a TP Link Omada set-up and I'm pretty happy with it so far! The EAP610 WiFi AP is vetted than my old router, because it comes with wifi6.

Great vid, to be honest, I was never sold on the controller being a seperate hardware device even with ubiquiti, i'm even more certain that I don't like it since I've moved to a UDMPro where it's all the one device. I really don't see why companies see this as a progressive feature. Again great vid!
@leoingle

What if it goes out in your UDMPro? Then the UDMPro is worthless because it can't run off of a cloud key. That's the benefit to it being a separate piece. I like it that way. Especially with the option to run it off of a system.

In the past I've deployed a lot of their equipment at home, for friends and family. Its always been very good for the price but from what I've seen they generally don't provide firmware updates for very long. Obviously this might be different for their business equipment or could have improved but its something to keep an eye on.

One of the routers greatest feature is upto 4 WAN connections that can be load balanced, not just failover. This is a game changer and something that Unifi does not do well at all... Yes you can setup routes for certain services to be bonded to specific WAN connections (Hosting for example). Give it 4 decent WAN's and do a speed test.... wow!

Hey Love your videos and thanks so much for all the information! I do have a quick question, for a home setup would it be possible to use only the router(TP-Link ER605/TL-R605)+cloud controller(TP-LINK OC200)+2 AP´s (TP-Link EAP235 each with its own POE injectors) BUT using an unmanaged switch (TP-Link LS1008G)? If I´m not going to setup an advance levels of access between devices?

The EAP620 is specified as high density which may explain the size. So if range and performance is better or more consistent than it's small competitor in harsh environments it may be worth the eye sore. I would like see this tested in comparison to other brands.

Been using Omada to manage our agency wifi for about a year. I tried the Ubiquiti solution for a minute, but Omada is light years beyond it in ease of use. My only complaint is that those of us using the software controller are forced to use NSSM as a kludge to get it running as a service. They at least have an install guide, but why is this not integrated into the installation?!? Anyway, solid product and the fact that the Cloud console is free is just bonus.

Good review. Couple of points, the EAP660HD than 620 is a better performer because of the WiFi6 4 x 4 ability. However... this AP points to one missing comment. With Comcast providing 1.2G internet, WiFI6 and StarLink providing much more bandwidth... a 1Gb Ethernet connector only can perform 880Mb throughput at the best test. Therefore, the SFP+ and 2.5G/10G Ethernet ports are required. TP-Link does NOT support these interfaces LAN or WAN in Omada even though they now have the EAP660HD which requires it. Ubiquiti does support these WAN and have the US-16-XG and US-Aggregation switches for WiFi6. Thanks again for EVERYTHING else you provided in this review.

True Anthony, routers and gateways available to consumer and prosumer markets max out at 1Gbe connections. Until the market demand is enough to warrant Ubiquity, TP-Link an others to have 2.5, 5 or 10Gb SFP+ connections, you'll need to create your own firewall. A custom firewall can be created with a modest, not slowest, home PC with the right motherboard expansion slots. At minimum you would need 2 ports either on the same card or two separate 1 port cards. 2.5Gb SFP+ go for $30 each on Amazon and need a x1 PCIe slot. 5Gb SFP+ cards are almost the same price as 10Gb SFP+ cards and not worth the effort. A single 10Gb SFP+ card is about $100 on Amazon and a 2 port about $210. Both require a x8 PCIe slot, so the video card slot would be the best choice. You'll need an operating system for the gateway. PfSense and OPNsense run from FreeBSD roots. This is the current FreeBSD hardware compatibility list. www.freebsd.org/releases/13.0R/hardware/ Each release has an updated list that is added to. Just make sure the SFP+ network cards / adapters you buy have a chipset that is on the list. Many people swear by PfSense, but I currently use OPNsense at home. I'm migrating to Omada so I don't have to managed my firewall, as much. Hopefully this helps you get to a point where you can do a speed test across a 2.5 or 10 SFP+ router/gateway at your home. Also, you'll have to buy SFP+ modules with CAT6a runs or an all in one terminated cable rated for 10Gb with the SFP+ modules already terminated (cheaper). Go for Intel SFP+ modules, if you can. I have never had compatibility or supported driver issues with them.

I have a single EAP-225 (not the wall plate version) running in my house. One of the main reasons I chose it over Ubiquiti, besides price, was the fact that is has a web interface. I like a system that has a controller available as an option, but is not absolutely required, as it is pretty unnecessary in a small system with only a couple of devices. Do all of these new TP-Link devices include web interfaces?

Nice to see that the EAP620 WiFi 6 access point is a proper 802.11ax device with support for AX also in the 2.4GHz band (which ubiquitys offerings do not currently support). Not sure if I could get approval to mount such an oversized and therefor slightly ugly device in many rooms, though 😀 The (5 GHz) AX performance benchmarks you showed were not impressive though....

At the end, it really looks like a feature rich and very complete solution. It also seems they absolutely copied the UniFi Controller, and features, and improved some things here and there. At the end, that's all we have, it LOOKS great. We're yet to see real world usage on medium/large scale as lots of us are used to do with UniFi. One topic you didn't touch is the availability of API to have things done on the Controller without using the Web UI. UniFi API is great and I have a lot of stuff automated using it.
