Today I'm back at Chenango Valley State Park K-2032 for another activation with Ed W4EMB's Penntek TR-45L. I had it out last weekend, and while I liked the radio overall, I wasn't blown away with its performance. Even though conditions were worse today, the radio performed quite a bit better (weird, I know). I can see why Ed loves this radio so much. While I was out, I ran into a teacher named Kevin who I mentor at school. He hung out and asked lots of questions during the activation, so this video has a lot more talking and information in it. All in all, I'm beginning to see what this radio is all about, and I might have to pick one up for myself in the near future. Thanks for watching and 73!
Evan

Thanks for the live review. The radio has great audio strong to my ears.

I haven't had to exploit the 2:1 or higher VSWR indicator yet, but am so glad it is there. I overheated a Toroid core with my Icom IC-718 running 25 watts CW & wished I figured it out before & finally saw the power output fluctuating, then left my fingerprints on the Toroid!!!

Hey Evan! I was also out with my Penntek TR-45L today. The weather was great and I was able to operate from a picnic table for the first time this year. Nice warm day... picnic table... and the Penntek. Doesn't get any better than that! :D There was a lot of activity on the band so I operated using CWN (CW Narrow) mode which helped a lot. I didn't need to use the audio filter. Glad to see you out spending a bit more time with this wonderful rig. Edit: I just noticed that your RF gain was a bit low. Don't be afraid to crank that baby all the way up!
@EvanK2EJT
@EvanK2EJT 5 месяцев назад
Yeah, I had the gain turned down a little as there was some band noise I was trying to knock out.

@@EvanK2EJT Good day Evan, I just wanted to share that I have had pretty good luck working weak signals with the TR-45L. On yesterday's activation I had a Q with another QRP station in the Czech Republic (529/429)! Here are the settings I normally use: ▪RX MODE - CWN (Narrow) ▪RF GAIN - Almost all the way up. ▪NOTCH - Fully clockwise (OFF). ▪AUDIO FILTER - OFF This probably goes against the general advice of selecting CW Wide as an activator but in CWW you will definitely hear too many other stations. As soon as you select CWN, they all disappear. You will still be able to hear the hunters that are slightly off frequency.

Nice activation video as usual. Kudos to you for adding a lot of Farnsworth when the slower speed Hunters called you. One nice thing about this radio is the easy access to the keyer speed change and all the other functions. No manual needed. If one owns a lot of different radios it is a challenge to keep up to speed on the different functions and menus. You have to bring the manuals along or keep digital copies. No issues with the Penntek Radios which makes it easy to add to the "stable". As I get older I often paraphrase Jeff Cooper. If he were a Ham he would say something like "Beware the man who only owns one radio...he probably knows how to use it" :)

Yeah, that's one thing I'll give the Penntek radios....they're pretty intuitive. I was able to figure out how to use everything without having to even look at the manual!

I did not build mine as a kit. I was sent two by mistake and both had the same performance (Skinnies) but signal reception very close to my Icom IC-718, however my TR-45L does not have a Preamp 1 or 2 which would be required if there was a 17M - 10M version. -Davey

My cell phone. I have the RBN open with my callsign entered. I also have myself in Hamalert so when I hit the RBN I get a notification.

Would it be irresponsible to buy a radio purely based on aesthetics?
