Rediculously expensive just to make anything you can probably buy for so much less money. That router base you made is probably worth $25.00.
@FineLineJoinery
@FineLineJoinery 9 месяцев назад
Fair point on the router base. Probably worth less, since I rarely need an offset base for my trim router 🤣. I was just looking for something quick to make to try out Trace. But regarding overall value, I personally have rarely purchased a tool and expected it to pay for itself in one use. Over the years and projects though, my Shaper Origin has paid for itself many times over and am confident Trace will too! I think we each have to balance our needs/wants/finances for ourselves and decide accordingly. Being a career contractor/carpenter/cabinetmaker, I generally don't make purchases that won't help me earn money faster and/or easier. But I will admit that sometimes there's a fun factor that weighs in too! I appreciate your comments. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! Enjoy using your Trace! BTW, like with most new tools, using it has gotten much easier with practice.🙂

Thanks for sharing. I've always thought the SO was a fancy bling tool for those who've not spent enough money on their hobby already. This convinced me. I could have made the same router base by hand in about 15 mins and none of the added costs...
@FineLineJoinery

Fair enough, I'm sure it is that for a lot of folks. I certainly don't use it every day, but it has been invaluable to me over the several years I've had mine. Could I have gotten by without it? Definitely. Has it saved me enough time to have paid for itself over and over? Also most definitely! We all work hard for our $$ and decide what we're trading that valuable time for. Truthfully, I don't even really need an offset base plate for my trim router. I just received Trace and wanted to try it out on something really quick! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! Happy Thanksgiving!

funny thing to say from someone featuring DJI Inspire drone as their avatar. fancy bling in the right hands is a powerful tool. The more I use origin over the years, the more amazed I've been with what I can accomplish VERY quickly to a degree of accuracy I could not have achieved with traditional means

@@80211Denver And those are all fair points to make. On the Inspire I can make that story worse; I have 3 Inspire 2s parked in my shop, now functionally obsolete because of a change in FAA regs this year.

why not try to take a picture or a few other angles including straight to see if you got better vector.
@FineLineJoinery
@FineLineJoinery 9 месяцев назад
The whole point of the Trace frame is not having to worry about the angle when you scan, so I really wanted to push through with that first attempt. I think my main problems were not being familiar with the app and my poor internet that day. I have since had much better results with Trace. In this video, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PpwmOZk_Nf4.html I scanned my drawing and it was literally ready to cut! Go figure! Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment!

Debatable. Using Trace eliminates the need for accurate measuring. And if dealing with irregular shapes, measuring would eat a lot of time and provides lots of opportunity for errors. My most recent use of Trace went without a hitch. I really think I had an especially bad internet day when I shot this video. Plus, from my CAD program, it's a multi-step process to get it to the SVG file that Origin wants. But there are always many good solutions for any problem! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Can this be used with a normal cnc?
@FineLineJoinery
@FineLineJoinery 9 месяцев назад
I haven't tried it yet, but the saved file is an SVG format and V-Carve should be able to import it and use the vectors to calculate toolpaths. So if your toolpathing software will open SVG's, you should be good to go. I'm working on a project now that I cut with the Origin, but it quickly became clear to me that my little Sienci Longmill would have been the tool for the job.🤣 I went ahead finished it with the Origin, because that's the workflow I wanted to use for the video, but I may do a follow-up using the CNC. If you're subscribed and signed up for notifications, the Origin version should be out in a few days. Thanks for watching and the question!

I'm really interested in knowing more about basically everything about your experience with the Shaper Origin. I really want to invest in one but since it's only a hobby I have to check my life insurance since my wife will most likely try to kill me if she finds out I bought one.

The Origin is great! For me, it's one of those tools that the more you use it, the more reasons you find to use it. I think there's some critical number of hours I need to use any tool, then it gets added to my mental database and becomes one of the things I can call on when I'm asking myself, "well how the hell am I going to do that?"

Thanks for the honest opinion and the other video of this machine, but i have a question: Can you load a vectorize file in the machine from a usb or only with the frame and the smartphone photo?
@FineLineJoinery
@FineLineJoinery 9 месяцев назад
You're welcome! You can load svg files using a USB thumb drive. I think you can see it plugged in on the side of the machine in the video. It has a little key fob dangling from it. You can also load the files over WiFi thru ShaperHub. What I do with Trace is save my file to my ShaperHub account, then load it onto Origin from there. HTH. Thanks for watching my videos!

Thanx for the video! I am getting that frame for christmas... I want to use it for my 3d printer. I spend way to much time tryiong to make items that fit into existing complicated shapes and this tool would save me alot of initial measuring and time... p.s. You internet connections issues would have driven me insane... lol
@FineLineJoinery
@FineLineJoinery 9 месяцев назад
Yeah, should work great for that as long as you can import the SVG file. BTW, I must have had a great connection the other day, cuz I scanned a drawing and literally went from scan to cut without having to touch it, probably a 15 second process. That was for my next video project. Thanks for watching and the comment!

I've definitely been a little disappointed with the "cleanup" process from captured lines to something clean enough that I feel like I can trust. I think I get too focused on the artifacts I can see when I zoom in tight. The lines are often broken from what seems like a clean drawing and the tool is a bit primitive. I need to practice more and learn what level of accuracy I actually need to be concerned with
@FineLineJoinery
@FineLineJoinery 10 месяцев назад
I know what you mean. I'm no expert with that app yet, but it seems to me that messing with the original scan before accepting it helps. Can't remember off the top of my head, but I think there's like a contrast adjustment or something? Sorry I don't have time to check right now... Good luck!

I suspect the choice of black marker makes a difference. I used to draw alot; Some black markers have a truly flat black ink and others have black ink that leaves a shiny reddish sheen. The latter type of ink has a tendency to reflect light more at certain angles. I suspect that reflections of light from this guys cameralighting combined with the very low angle at wich he took the orinter caused the ink to reflect lights back at the camera at some points alon the line. Thats what caused the camera and software to think those lines where white/invisible/not there. So I think less bright lights and a better vertical top angle would reduce the problem. I am getting one this x-mas to use for my 3d printer. I will need it to trce outlines of complex shapes and then build my 3dfiles from there, so I will be changing and fixing the lines in cad software anyways sine is just need this tool to make a template for my model...

@FineLineJoinery
@FineLineJoinery 10 месяцев назад
I would bet that Trace is more accurate than a scanner, if you really needed to match some particular shape, like that screw hole pattern. Plus not having to use a computer to convert the scan to SVG. A project that is somewhere in my future is making a new pick guard for my wife's mandolin. It's actually slightly recessed into the wood, so my plan is to lay a piece of paper over the mandolin face, trace the recess, then use Trace to scan and load the shape into Origin. Looking forward to trying it someday... Glad you liked the video and thanks for watching!

@@FineLineJoinery I am getting Trace to use with my 3d printer. I often need to make parts that fit in existing complicated holes. Tracing a piece of tape and using Trace to trasfer that outline to a digital form would save me alot of time with the sliding gauge... :D p.s Try another black marker next time. some markers have a more reflecting ink than others. I suspect reflections of cameralight is what made your outlines a bit choppy... Maybe a more flat black ink would reflect less light and make for a better scan combined with a more vertical top angle when taking the picture...?

@@JokerInk-CustomBuilds That was the actual pen that comes with Trace, so one would expect... I don't know, whatever one would expect. The pen included in the kit seems comparable to an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie. I'm sure that would work just as well.
