English consists of approximately 44 sounds (phonemes) represented by 26 letters. Since there is no clear letter-sound correspondence, as there are in other languages, learning the alphabetic code in English can be troublesome for many children. For the very young EFL learner, learning phonics ensures a systematic approach to pronunciation and lays the foundation for confident readers in English. This workshop looks at teaching synthetic phonics to very young learners of EFL, how to capitalise on skills the children already have in their own language, and, with a little creativity, how to provide support in the areas they may find more challenging.

Hello Sebastian, Tracey is the author of Monster Phonics, which is published by ANAYA. There are five books in the series and they cover all of the sounds in the English language. The videos she used for the session at the Madrid teachers’ conference in 2014 are available in the Pupils’ Books and these can be ordered on Amazon. Booksellers also sell them as they are currently used with our early years and primary students at Madrid Young Learners and Villaviciosa centres. For bigger orders to be used in schools and access to the teacher’s materials, it would be best to contact the ANAYA sales reps directly. All the best, Carlos

L2 children cannot hear the sounds. Training in hearing is invaluable: aka-kara.com. Kids and moms can practice cell phones anytime anywhere.
