I saw someone write they had forgotten about this song. How could you forget Paul in that final scene? “When they look at you they don’t see what I see…” THAT’S what her Paul looked like through her eyes. I might love him; but there’s only ONE Paul. And he’s ours too. 💕
MacColl died in an accident on 18 December 2000 in Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico. She was 41. She had been diving in a reef with her sons when a motorboat entered the restriced area.
Thanks for pointing that out. All these years later, I still miss Kirsty. By the way, when I saw Kirsty play Chicago's double door club, she introduced this song by shouting "God bless, Tracy Ullman!" Tracy adopting this song as her theme song for her show provided an annuity for Kirsty and her family. A good friend of mine had four songs on a TV show, he said they paid more than every album he's ever released...combined.
I'm Dutch and was alive in 1983 and loved this song but what made it even better was the oustanding and funny videoclip which came along with it. But also other songs of her like "Terry" where shown on Dutch TV at the time. She was and still is a great performer and funny as hell.
I thought she just lip synched it, but if so, then she's lip syncing still because her voice pretty much sounds identical. She really should do more singing.
@@emelle1283 Not my world. My world is top Bananarama and totally Ace of Base(ed). Although my brother still regrets not getting to marry Tracy or Toyah.
My goodness I was about 18yrs old at the time my daughter was born in 1983 I always loved Tracey songs, and she still sound good of all time, and she got a pretty british accent, love you Tracey, keep doing what you do❤❤❤❤
I responded to somebody, but I think it's worth mentioning as its own comment. As many people have pointed out, the song was originally written and recorded by Kirstie MacColl - daughter of the songwriter Ewan MacColl _(The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face)._ Tracy heard it, and wanted to cover it, and even included Kristy's original exclamation "Baby!" from the original recording. What many might not know is that the *only* guaranteed money in music is the songwriting. Everything else can be stolen by the record company, but songwriting is handled by separate groups, and if you retain your own publishing, you can keep it out of the hands of the record company. It's only pennies per track, but they add up. So Tracy covering Kristy's song gave Kirsty a constant stream of income. But far more than that, anytime you synchronize a song with visuals (like the opening credits of a very popular television show) the songwriter gets paid _every single time at plays._ and the _Tracy Ullman_ show was on _HBO_ for years. And it's not pennies, it's a substantial amount. A good friend of mine got four songs on a popular TV show, and tells me that those four songs made him far more money than all of his dozen or so albums *all put together.* So Tracy's cover of this song basically enabled Kirsty to have the career she had. When I saw Kirsty at Chicago's _Double Door_ club, she introduced this song by shouting _"God bless Tracy Ullman!"_ Indeed.
My goodness, I had no idea this was happening. I would have paid big money to see this. One of my favorite songs, ever, written by the incredible Kirsty MacColl. Before Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, there was Tracey, queen of the acting pop love song.
@@ChatGPT1111 Which makes it even crazier that Tracy hit big first, considering their musical talents. But she was far luckier than the other two, in having incredible support around her to be able to take the spotlight of being an outspoken, eff you I'm not going to conform to your standards, very different pop star. "The Simpsons" would never have existed without her career.
This song came out of nowhere in the early 80s. Perfectly capturing that early 60s girl group sound, the song was only surpassed by the charming video that accompanied it. I loved it then, and I love it now.
it did not, it was written en sung by Kirsty Maccoll in 79. Due to bad decisions by the record company it did not work til 4 years later Tracey did a cover. (the shout out "BABY!" in the song is still Kristy's voice because Tracey couldn't get that high note) Kristy died in 2000 (?) in a diving/speedboat accident. That's al for today. ;)
An 80s song that sounds like Diana Ross could have sung it in 1965. The music video is incredible. The Paul McCartney appearance at the end is icing on the cake. It’s great social commentary about growing up and getting older, the different stages of life. It was absolutely the right call to make this the theme to her HBO show - and have every character she plays in the show sing it. I first saw her as the horny, Sheriff of Rottingham loving witch in Mel Brooks’ underrated Robin Hood: Men In Tights. Her delivery in that movie was spot on hilarious. “I was that close. I touched it.” Wow. Okay. 😂
I remember hearing this back in the 80’s and thought well...Tracey just captured the 60’s girl group sound in about 5 minutes. I love this song and seeing this version for the 1st time tonight has brought me more enjoyment than one could ever imagine. Tracey, wherever you may be these days, bless you and thank you.
What a talent Tracey Ullman is. Her hit song They Don't Know was written by the late Kristy McColl. This is her first ever live performance of this 1980's hit record. Tracey is a great actress and singer too! Love her British accent.
One of my all time favourite entertainers ! Tracey Ullman is so multi-talented. She can sing, dance, act, write and perform great comedy. She is in a word, FANTASTIC !!! And I love her voice, too.
This is great and kind of sad. Great because I like her and this song. Sad because as someone who never really took her musical career all that seriously she sounds better than many lifetime musicians who I have hear perform live that obviously are a product of the studio.
Wow she sounds exactly the same!!! I've always loved this song. I found out about it after Tracy became well known and i was addicted. I have the 45 picture sleeve and i have a direct drive audio technica with weight, anti skate, S shape tone arm with adjustable tracking force, pitch control, and a hyper elliptical stylus on a Yamaha 4K receiver. Sounds beyond bad ass! I always crank it up too.
Sounds just like it did in 1983! It was my favorite for months! Best part of the video was at the end when Paul McCartney makes a cameo as the "Paul" on the window banner. Great of him to do that for her!
This takes me back to 1983 & being in 8th grade & watching the video on MTV when MTV actually played videos!!! THE 80s...THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST ERA/DECADE OF MUSIC TO EVER COME AROUND IN MY OPINION!!! Great song...even better memories!!! Much love from Mobile Alabama.
I remember when this song came out I didn't know who she was at first until I saw in her in movies and I thought oh WOW! she's got a beautiful voice and she's hilarious as well. She's the same age as my wife except about 2 months younger. She was also very funny in ROBIN GOOD MEN IN TIGHTS.
Great track and a lovely hit from 1983. It is very reminiscent of the sixties sound. Love Games by Belle and the Devotions is similar song from 1984- it was the UKs Eurovision entry. It still sounds good today.
I was born in England in we moved to the US But I went into the armed forces and got sent to Iraq I love playing that song on my cassette player driving other soldier's nuts War is ugly butt Playing that song always made me feel better even after getting shot twice I was sent home I still play that song to this day wish I could have got too meet her
Ok - Tracey had several hits in the U.K. - Breakaway, They Don’t Know, Move Over Darling, My Guy, Sunglasses and another Kirsty MacColl song, Terry. Tracey also had 2 hit albums in the U.K., mostly of covers but brilliantly produced and very Tracey! Happy times ❤️
I heard this song suddenly in Cairo today and it's my first time to know about it. And I love it so much it's great song great music. Am Rina artist from Kuwait
