NOTE: Please check out my new art journaling video "intervention": • "Intervention" from "T... It is 1 of 6 videos on the DVD that is included with my book "The Art Journal Workshop." You can find out more about that book at tinyurl.com/2uy...
This video is a peek into how I work in my visual journal. It took a little under an hour and a half for me to complete, and I sped up and edited the film so you can watch the whole thing in 10 minutes. I did not plan out what I was going to journal about--I work as I normally do, just letting come out what needs to come out without censoring myself or being concerned with the final product. I'm not trying to make a piece of art because the process is what's important to me.
I positioned the camera so that you could best see the journal while I worked, which meant you couldn't always tell what my hands were doing outside of the journal. This doesn't affect the video or watching my process other than you can't tell at times that I've applied gel medium to a piece that I'm gluing down, or that I'm dipping my paintbrush, watercolor pencils or crayons in water.
The materials that I used in this piece are gesso, Golden's Heavy Body acrylics and fluid acrylics, watercolor pencils and crayons, crayons, watersoluble oil pastels, markers, pens, rubber stamps (both hand-carved and stamps from my line of art rubber stamps that I sell), and ephemera (a self-portrait, an incense box, and a candy bar wrapper).
I frequently receive questions about how I am able to write on top of paint, so I will answer here to keep from getting deluged with more questions about it. I can write on top of my painted journal pages with just about any kind of writing tools--pens, markers, etc. The key is to not apply too thick of a layer of paint. As you will see in the video, I use several (sometimes many) light layers of paint. That is better than one thick layer. If you can't write on your page after painting, the paint is too thick, or maybe try something different to write with.
I teach visual journaling workshops as well as other mixed-media and fiber workshops. Please visit my web site at www.TraciBunker... for my workshop schedule. The large alphabet stamp I used is Blind Melon tinyurl.com/ykf... , the stamp I used for the lines is from my Journaling stamp sheet tinyurl.com/y8m... . I also used a monkey stamp tinyurl.com/ydf... and a hand stamp from my "Evidence" stamp sheet tinyurl.com/ye4.... All of these are available from my web site. You can also visit my blog at www.tracibunker....
The music that is played while I'm working is recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations, all from the Conet Project created by Akin Fernandez. The mysterious sounds and voices are believed to be encrypted messages from short-wave radio stations operated by government agencies as a way to communicate with spies. Just like my visual work, I layered many different recordings from the Conet Project to create the final soundtrack. Many thanks to Akin Fernandez for allowing me permission to use these recordings in my video. You can find the Conet Project here: www.irdial.com/....

Thanks so much for showing your process! My art teacher showed this to us to get us inspired to start creating, and I must say that this really got the ball rolling for me. And to everyone commenting on the sound, if you don't like it, mute it. I thought it was very unique, instead of just background music.

Love your journaling techniques. Also I find the background music very interesting..sometimes like a creepy carnival. I love it!

The roller is called a brayer. I use it to roll over pieces after I have applied an adhesive to them and laid them on the page, to be sure that they are securely attached. You don't see me apply the adhesive to the items I glue down because I'm doing that to the left of my journal, which is outside of what the camera is picking up (I mention that in the video information). Glad you liked my journal page.

I honestly don't get why people feel the need to leave negative comments on free videos. It takes less energy to be nice! And it feels better for both the giver & the receiver.

@moonswirl Thanks! I'm so glad you liked the music. It seems people either really love it or hate it. Nope I'm not a recording artist. All of the music was made by layering different recordings from the Conet Project. I chose it because I thought it was very fascinating, and when I wrote to the owner of the project, he gave me permission to use it (and he was happy with how it all turned out).

I'm the only one to have liked that music? I even found it relaxing because it reminded me of sounds I heard in my childhood, of sounds in my languages learning CDs and it reminds me of Stockhausen (which I liked for reason 1, some sounds he used reminded me of my childhood, and somehow it was like hearing people living from some kind of tube... I guess it's not what he expected when he started composing his stuffs, but I don't even remember the titles, so yeah.)

I saw this remarkable video a year or so ago and have been trying to find it again ever since. Today was the day! A complete sensory hit. If you like dissonant music, please listen to Glen Branca's Bad Smells. It is a raucous dive into sound. Twyla Tharp danced to it.

Thanks! The wax paper is just protecting my brayer (the hand roller) from getting glue on it. I use the brayer when I collage glue down, to make sure it is attached really well. The wax paper keeps excess glue off the brayer--if I didn't use it, I could end up rolling glue onto the surface of what I just collaged down.

@SaraEnDippity Thanks! I generally always do a journal page in one sitting, but it just depends. Right now I am doing "30 Days of Journaling" where I work in my journal every day for 30 days and post it to my blog. With this project, since I'm doing it every day, I don't always do the whole page in one sitting. You can see it all on my blog.

Thanks Traci, I really enjoyed seeing your process from beginning to end. I was especially interested in how you applied, muted the colours and then reintroduced them to get the balance you wanted. And as the soundtrack was not to my taste which is why I muted it . . . a very simple solution which I often use. There's no good or bad, it's just a matter of personal taste.
@TraciBunkers
@TraciBunkers 13 лет назад
@SaraEnDippity I have to do this in 2 messages! As you can see in the video, I always dry everything with a hair dryer so I can keep working. As for the punchinella & sharpie, I'm just tracing the inside of the circles. I think the error on the link was because my website said I was out of the stamp, but I "restocked" it.

I actually scrolled down to the comments section to compliment the music. There's so many elements in it! Like the OLD Mickey Mouse black and white boat episode for example. It would sound really sick with some bass drops and dubstep mixed in :-) It would be perfect for it. (some popular dubstep is from Deadmous and Skrillex). Honestly, I wish that others would have some unconventional music/soundbites. It gets repetitive, you know? Anyway, that is my long-winded I love it.
@SaraEnDippity
@SaraEnDippity 13 лет назад
I am so amazed by your work! I love how it all came together so perfectly. It amazes me that you did it all in one sitting. do you always work that way? And if so, I'm assuming that you're using a heating tool after laying down some paint? I saw that you were using puncillia with a red sharpie (?) near the end. I LOVE how that came out! Can you tell me a little more about that process? One last thing- I noticed others having a hard time w/ blind melon. a . at end of link is cause for error

@oceanpoet1 If you want more of a complete how to instruction on her techniques, instead of taking her workshop as she suggests, might I suggest a different route.....On May 1st 2011 of this year, Traci is coming out with a book on her techniques called: Art journal workshop...I just went to Barnes and Noble to place a hold on one, it should tell how to do her techniques at a much lower cost than her workshop!;) Thanks Traci!:)

@robianstey I'm sorry you found the background music annoying. The audio is not sped up. If you read the info I have with the video, you'll see where the background audio originated from, and that's exactly how the various tracks sound. I found them fascinating, which is why I used them. You can always turn off the audio if you find it distracting.

I came across this video in a search for "visual journal workshop" and really enjoyed watching your process. But I must say I was most impressed with your choice of the Conet Project for the soundtrack...I have this in my collection and recognized it right away. Are you also a recording artist? I agree about responding negatively, but when someone responds to a post that was written two years ago and is negative to me, and it isn't even their channel, it really gets the best of me I just commented that I couldn't understand your words and was hoping to hear the tutorial because that is how I learn best. @TraciBunkers
@TraciBunkers 10 лет назад
I just do not understand why people feel the need to leave mean comments on free videos. If you don't like the audio, simply mute it, or move along. No reason to be nasty about it. I was curious what type of music you like to use on your videos, but see you haven't created any.
@1deleau
@1deleau 10 лет назад
Traci Bunkers I was neither mean nor nasty; I simply made a comment, which is what this area is for... I believe you have the option to block comments. You have obviously put videos on youtube for others to watch; I choose not to do this, as my talents do not lie here. I will overlook the fact that you have to stress that this is free; again your choice. I am obviously here to learn some art techniques, which you are offering. Most people that I have watched thus far intersperse their music with talking, so to mute a video that is supposed to be instructional seems ridiculous. Clearly by the other comments (which I never read initially) it is unanimous. It is simply a suggestion to not distract with such silliness; silence is golden. I suggest you chill out and not get so defensive... if you would like, I could recommend some awesome music... that would be my field of expertise!

Since you got to give your opinion in your original comment, it's only fair for someone else to get to give theirs as well. Replying to your first comment, you must not have see the information with the video that states "This video is a peek into how I work in my visual journal." It wasn't meant to be an instructional, step-by-step video. If you are interested in that, you should buy my book "The Art Journal Workshop." And yes--7 people out of 51,5192 agreed with you.

Most people doing demos will speed them up when the content can be dull to watch. They even do this in instructional videos, which this is not. She doesn't say anything, so muting doesn't make you miss anything. There are hundreds of other videos that are meant to teach you techniques, so why complain? Just move on. Oh, and read the video descriptions. They will usually tell you what to expect.
