Tracing Filter/Oscillator Frequency Response Using Spectrum Analyzer and Signal Generator

In this video, I demonstrated using a spectrum analyzer and a signal generator to trace the frequency response and determine the resonant frequency of a filter or oscillator. This technique is useful when tracking generator is not available. The spectrum analyzer used here is an HP 8566B and the RF signal generator used is HP 8642B. www.kerrywong.com

Thanks for this video. I have a Tektronix 2710 analyzer but it doesn't have a TG. Now I know how to work around that.

What if you connect triggers of RF gen and SA together. Making RF Gen triggering SA and thus making t basicly a traging generator?

When you check the quartz crystal in the second case, the resulting curve on the spectrum analyzer screen could be said to be the admittance curve, that is, the inverse of the impedance of that crystal. Please tell me if this conclusion is correct .thanks

Hi Kerry, have you given any thought into matching the input and output impedance's of the DUT so that you're not measuring other spurious effects caused by impedance mismatches between the generator and the SA input? I seem to recall that Alan, w2aew, uses a nominal value pad on the output side of the signal generator before the DUT for similar reasons.

Thanks Kerry for posting! Did you manually sweep the frequency generated by turning the signal generator frequency selector dial? I ask as it is never shown in the video how thr frequency is changed.

Yeah, for this one because I did not use a tracing generator the frequency was changed manually via the dial. If you search my video for tracking generator you will see that later I built a tracking generator for the 8566B.

when you said @4:44, you'll begin manual sweeping, i dont see your sweep time change at all? what exactly did you press becuase im trying to measure frequency reponse on an hp8591E model and i cant perform it how you do it

The 8566B was in max hold mode, and the manual sweep is done from the frequency synthesizer (8642B).

oh haha sorry i meant what did you press on your rf generator. im using an HP8647A rf signal generator. i dont know if im using it correcttly. im attempting to look at the frequnecy reponse with my HP8591E spectrum analyzer. people are saying i should use the tracking generator but mine is unequipped with one.@@KerryWongBlog
