Tracing Gremlins in a Tektronix (main-frame) Oscilloscope power supply.

By my standards, this is quite a long video. This 7854 oscilloscope has a power supply fault that is proving elusive to find. It’s also quite complex, so easy to add additional faults if clumsy. It is so well made I am reluctant to give up on it, despite many modern digital scope’s specifications surpassing this one these days.
Repairing Switch-Mode power supplies can be challenging and this one has some features not often seen in modern power supplies.
It's now back up and running but I'm not convinced I have completely solved the problem. There is also a logic fault still to find, within the vertical channel mode. This may be on the back-plane board which is difficult to access. Connectors are not often keyed, so it's possible to mess up when reassembling from memory. So far, I have not found any out of spec capacitors or dreaded Tantalums shorts. The scope is from the 1980s and also have many hours on it. It could be at the stage of going from one fault to the next.
Sorry for the out of focus schematic section. This was actually because I had to zoom in during editing so is a resolution issue.

It takes some serious commitment to fix something like this. Your comment about feeling you're going mad when doing it really felt familiar 😁

this should give people hope that if something isn't working you have to just persevere and keep going. You will get there eventually. Nice work!!

I also have a 7854 which has a fault around the digital display board, not easy to debug that without a decent logic analyser. I wasn't aware you could split the upper and lower sections, so that's very useful to learn!

Good to know you have the same scope. Most survivors seem to be in the states. Yeah, processor and logic board debug is a deep dive. Apparently there were some early scopes that suffered from EPROM memory loss with time, resulting in the digital storage not working. It is limited to a USA batch of early serial numbers though. The scope is designed to hinge at the back but it doesn't make access all that much better. The two halves can be further separated but it means disconnecting cable and that can lead to more problems. My second problem was left and right Vertical channels 'Added' all the time. Found this was due to a 74LS153 being stuck. Managed to replace it on the backplane without removing or disconnecting the board but had to remove everything around it to get to it.

I'm amazed someone thought to save those manuals, they're usually the first thing that goes on the bonfire. replacement LED's don't look bad at all other than not haing any side bleed out. Well done keeping focus, though I confess 80% of that went way over my head

These old scopes have a bit of a following so the manuals often get saved. Enthusiasts, have also put a lot of them online.

👍A happy ending. Well done and hope it holds up.

Have you looked at the base waveforms? On the main driver transistors, its strange that its one side ever time ..

yeah, unfortunately never been hooked up when a fail occurs. Only ever seen that jitter a couple of times off load on the bench. Always looks good and stable when I put it back together.
