Perhaps the most important period in the calendar for ornithologists in Azerbaijan, are the weeks during which a migrating Siberian Crane stops at the Shirvan National Park en route between Iran and Arctic Russia. Yes, that’s "crane" in the singular - just one bird now flies the 6000km ‘Western route’, an individual who is now internationally known by the name Omid, meaning ‘Hope’ in Persian.
