Since everyone is too lazy to post direct links, here they are: SDR dongle used is from hakshop.com link to the dongle: hakshop.myshopify.com/products/software-defined-radio-kit-rtl-sdr first program is ADS-B Scope from www.sprut.de/electronic/pic/projekte/adsb/adsb_en.html#downloads second program is ADS-B Sharp from sdrsharp.com/index.php/downloads That site no longer exist, the domain is replaced by airspy.com I haven't located that specific program (it may be called something else)
Yay, just ordered my SDR dongle. I'm gonna build a discone antenna and hopefully try to pick up a broadcast from the International Space Station, which conveniently passes over my house every now and then!
I built my antenna, which picked up nearby air traffic control frequencies. No luck with the ISS though. I've joined an amateur radio club and am working towards getting a HAM licence, so hopefully those guys will be able to help me out!
***** Those radio amateurs should be able to help you out. There are different people interested in different areas of radio technology. Good luck with getting your HAM license. I hope that you are going for the "general" or "extra" class so you can do a lot of things on HF as well.
You can improve the performance of that little antenna easily by attaching to a metal base like a pie tin. It has a magnet on the bottom usually so it will not shift around. Non-ferrous items like frozen aluminum pie plates work too. You can attach it to the top of a lamp shade. The top of your refrigerator, a metal file cabinet work well too.
This is cool I already found a few planes. The antenna included in the kit is actually about the right length for 1090MHz (4.75 inches is half wavelength @ 1182MHz). but with the right studs to screw into the base, some solder, and metal coat hangers you can make quick antennas for any occasion, made a 155MHz one for police scanning.
This is so amazing, cheap, and I love it! I'm an aviation enthusiast and always been into computers and RF as well, and this is such a perfect, fun project! Thanks!
Just want to thank you for both of your wonderful presentation that really helps us understanding certain technology. We can have some quality time of our own beside burning it down at a bar. Thanks so much.
A VHF quarter wave at 1 GHZ, is under 2" long. A collinear would be a better idea, but if you are running cable over 25 feet, buy lower loss cable such as Heliax, but it is costly. 1/4" superflex or LDF4-50 (1/2") is a great cable to obtain, and QRZ.com has sales on such cable often. If you plan on buying new, expect to spend about $3.50/foot for this.
I have installed Dump 1090 but when I run it, it says I have two devices running. I found by Googling a bit further that adding --device-index 1 (for above) to the bat file for Dump1090 solved the issue
Well covered there preacher! New toys hmm, oh'boy more disclaimers to arrive soon. Love this show, hope to get some followers that can utilize this in a manner respective and not be arse to our friendly skies. But my wife works with a co company in aircraft that I never thought of actually sharing the exposure they have, well done. Needs Google earth overlay and regrfx the planes to there descrips and it would look epic. Keep up the good work.
Patricia, aircraft safety devices are well known, just like all ARC information, all are freely available information. even general aviation has complete access to air traffic safety equipment, Nav/Comm, NDB, radar altimeters, glideslope, as well as transponder codes for location/altitude squawks to inform ATC where an aircraft is, and its current altitude. Tower controlled airspace requires these instruments.
Hi Shannon, I am trying to replicate your procedure but sadly ADS-B# no longer exists. Can you recommend an alternative? I also tried RTL1090 but it doesn't seem to work with ADS-B Scope, unless I set it up wrong. Thanks! :-)
I bought your dongle and got it working with SDR Sharp radio ,but when I try to use ADS-B software it doesn't show up in ADS-B software, but it thinks it is a Beast.?. Could you please help, Thanks
Looks like Darren is confused about packets vs frames. In the network layer, you talk about packets, but on the physical layer you talk about frames, because the packets have been encapsulated into them for transport over a physical medium.
Hi. I am using a single raspberry pi. I would like to setup an adsb station as well as a remote sdr server. I have two sdr dongles. How do I set this up?
It's really substantially more than just 30 miles. Having my dongle tethered to the PC, the little 3" stock antenna's cable won't allow me to even place it by a window. I routinely track aircraft as far as 150km (over 90 miles). This is in a ground-level home surrounded by hills. I'm sure that in better conditions you can track much farther out. Some 200km is pretty common as I have seen in forums.
Can I build a Hak5 RC Car w/GPS that you can plug your adapter in, so you can have it go to specific areas, come back with data logged OR use SIM & upload data? Maybe better if it was a drone...
Actually if you just want to watch planes on your android device with a wifi/cell connection, you can install SkyRadar, I believe it's called... plots all the planes broadcasting on a map. Search the Google Play store for it. Cost: free. If you like what you see, and want a system you can take into the air, you can plunk some money down on a small receiver to work with your tablet.
I could not find the location to download the both the program. must be my bad !!! Could you kindly kindly help me out as a novice.. :( please please and also !!! I can buy SDR dongle from hack shop. Really wanna try this weekend project. Thanks.
What is the end piece called the the antenna hooks into the dongle with. I built an antenna but can find an end piece to hook up to the dongle. I use to have one and know the name of the piece that hooks up to the end of the coaxial but i forget.
The specific connector type may vary with your dongle model. My dongle has an MCX connector input. You can order converter plugs from MCX to other formats such as BNC, F, etc if that makes it easier to interface to DIY antennas.
DustyBill Then it should be an MCX connector. You can purchase a pigtail cable with a male MCX connector on one end and a female connector of whatever else type on the other end to make it easier to connect your DIY antenna.
Other than to download the software is a Internet connection needed? I don't think there would be but I'd rather check, im going on holiday and there is a airport around 10 miles out so was hoping I could download the software and track some planes! (Hotel doesn't have wifi) :'(
now next time i travel by air i will be always be paranoid about some guy having sdr in his bedroom can mess with my aircrafts flight path by doing some attacks........OMG this is so not cool.....how can they broadcast unencrypted data packets....
Unauthenticated and unencrypted... That's just stupid. It would be sooooooooo simple to fix that! One simple solution would be to give each plane a secret key and have an open database of the corresponding public keys. I'm sure there are better ways, but this would be stupid simple.
Its kinda funny actually that these people have not taken the test to get their tickets, even the lowest license class (Technician) gives you full TX access to huge swaths of spectrum to play with, amateur TV rx/tx, digital , phone (voice), Radio over IP soooo much stuff to play with - from about 28.3 MHz up to 38 GHz.. And as far "interfering" it was a valiant attempt at being a disclaimer, but a little further poking around would get you that this system has NOT A THING to do with current ATC and direct routing and control of ANY aircraft - in
At 14:34 he says you can get the autopilot to make evasive action. NOT TRUE. The autopilot will not maneuver the plane without pilot input. If there is a TCAS alert (Traffic Collision Alert System, separate from ADSB) which is a real aircraft transponder data and a RA, Resolution Advisory, is given, the pilot MUST disconnect autopilot and fly the plane (climb or descend) to increase separation as TCAS directs (usually it is an envelope on the pilots primary flight display with aural warning TRAFFIC and climb or descend. ADSB is not the same as TCAS or onboard GPS/NAV systems or radar.
+tamanebp thats the problem, sdr# has been replaced by adsbspy and i dont have an airspy device to work with, and i dont intend on buying one just becase they want me to use it when i already have an rtlsdr
*+tamanebp* The version that comes with SDR#, now aptly renamed _"ADSBSpy"_, no longer supports RTL2832 dongles, only their own AirSpy receiver. Too bad. Maybe you could upload the previous version - the one that did support those dongles as shown in the video, to some file server such as 4Shared, etc, so we can give it a try?
I just played around with this yesterday :) But I used "Virtual Radar" instead of ADS-B Scope, it runs as a server so you can see what is going on from any browser and it uses google maps. Here is an example (not mine) --> fuzivel .no-ip. org:8080/virtualradar/desktop.html
The only thin about SDR radios is that what happens 10 years down the road when legalized Marijuana takes over the minds of programmers and they forget how to write code for the program? Just saying..!
Is this information something you want to share with the general public (and terrorists)? Looks like fun, but.....a little TMI where our security is concerned. N450PA Polar Air Cargo Boeing 747-46NF
Those companies most likely want as many people to view the info as possible, as the unencrypted and 0 authentication nature of it has been around for a long time, and they have done nothing about it. I cant wait to get some SDR going and seeing if I find anything interesting.
So cool. Nice gift Darren. Shannon, start a new channel just on the radio By the way order my dongle after watching the other video, got it 2 days later, just about the time a remembered I ordered it. The ADS-B is way cool. Took 10 minutes and I'm used virtual radar. It uses google maps. www.virtualradarserver.co.uk/
Flightradio24 is not free, it is internet based, not off the air. You have to pay for your internet or cell phone connection. With this program and cheap dongle, you take the signal direct off the air.
One800J where do you think Flightradar24 gets it's data? "With suitable software, these readily available, low cost devices can be used to track aircraft and feed data to Flightradar24.com. And since all feeders get a free Flightradar24 Premium subscription, you can recover the cost of the receiver in less than 12 months." "
It's complicated. But with the right equipment you could make plains apear that aren't really there. You could trick some plains that are using auto pilot, that there is s plane right next to them. And that they need to turn to avoid it. some autopilot systems use these signals. But not all do. Also there's the chance the pilot will be able to correct it. But say the pilot isn't really paying attention. And the system is spoofed with fake plan signals. Say there is like a bunch placed above it and to the right and left the plain is going to go down.
Now say you do this for more then one plain. You might be able to get them to crash into each other. This is actually very dangerous. As almost any body with the right equipment. and a little reading on the interne. Could do.
well for the reasons you said. Some PLANK just might do what you try not telling them NOT too. Their is always some freaking idiot trying to prank a dam plane. However a great cover and I am very surprised about the none security. Keep up the great work buddy.
mind you. I would very much like you too cover the new revelation about the Intel processors having a backdoor hardware hack built into the CPU that allows other companies to spy on your computer. This was covered by alternative media and has been some what partly, openly admitted by intel. The CPUs in question is the sandybridge CPU I3-I7 and newer. right upto the Vpro series. this is since post 2010. Is their any real truth in this.???????
for where I am sitting, words is killing the American society according to Obamacare. But what do I know, I am just a foreign person that don't care about my family in America, whilst I reside else where in the world. Trouble is I care very much about the americans.
