Charley the new line looks great ! Love the way this is coming together. I think because it is a “country scene” - rock wall would be best. Brick is more inner city style wall ! @@ChadwickModelRailway I'm not a modeller, Charlie, but I was briefly in my (faraway) adolescence. I'm still fascinated by model trains and you are the leading site as far as I can judge! As far as I'm aware, you don't often go into your garage for the show, and so one doesn't get a feel for where you might live. I had a completely different picture imagined. So many sparrows!

The problem I found when painting flexi track before laying it was when you bend it exposes the bare metal that was behind the plastic chairs as shown at 19:26 . Best to mask the surrounding area then paint after the track is laid.

Yet again Charlie, an interesting and helpful video. I have, in the past, I have reinforced the under sides of bridges with thin mild steel sheeting, if I had doubt about their integrity. It is also worth mentioning that Tracksetta do offer a straight track template. That said, the mirror "trick" works very well and I have used that in the past. Personally though, I quite like the odd kink in straight track and there are many examples of it in the real world. Greatly looking forward to see it all develop :)

Charlie, the Bridge abutments are sizable chunks of masonry so the pier material is a great idea. The bearing for the bridge could be cut back as the arch of the Steel allows the bearing at just the ends so the bits you cut off could have remained but they needed to be shortened any way. Check out some photos of similar bridges. A great video as usual.

Dear Charlie, love the episode, cool to see the ‘old’ iron road slowly turn into the branch line you’ve planned. Like the arched bridge, cool to see how you’ve tweaked it to the bridge location. Got one remark though, over time I’ve collected a lot of photos on different types of bridges, amongst which the arched types. Don’t really see any arched bridges with such a big ‘footing’ at the bridge abutments. There are some that have somewhat protruding abutments which they sit on, but in my humble opinion never toward a full section of their lower support structure. In this case it may be useful to either have some kind redressing of the old abutments, to justify their with, or some kind of scenic vignette which tells a story this span has been adjusted. Might also be nice to put some true bridge footings under the structure, as it’s a bit of an eye catcher on your layout. Nevertheless it’s looking rather nice already. Love to see this scene develop further. Cheerio

Hi Charlie, cracking video as always, and lovely to see a lot more progress. I was wondering if I could pop in a request for the next Chadwick swift video, as it’s an issue my dad and I have faced for a long time. The problem we face is that when it comes to adding kadee couplings to old Lima and hornby d-link type stock, we hit a barrier between the different ways the old couplings can be removed. Some of them are just screwed into the bogie, but some are actually part of the bogie, therefore making it practically possible to remove them without snipping away. And, even after sometimes clearing that problem, we then hit another barrier in terms of heights or lengths of the kadees’. One idea is to fit NEM sockets to the bottom of locos and the use kadee #17, 18 & 19 to enable a loco to uncouple from its stock, magnetically. If you could take a look at this issue Charlie in an upcoming video, then that would be fantastic. Many thanks again, and keep up the great work with the Chanel. 👍🏼

Hi Charlie 3 quick points: 1 Trach rubbers good or bad??? 2 Hurray for Copydex - I thought it had gone bust but a great product for track laying, used in moderation. 3 LIMA -what a great company it was - still so much of their stuff around and (usually) very reliable even if it is not up to todays demanding finish and detail. I have quite a number of coaches with new wheel sets for code 75 and they work very well. The bridge was very good - I saw one on ebay a few days ago (for less than you paid) and was tempted. Overall, another nice video, full of useful advice. I too am laying tack and will be very happy at the end of it ....but I like laying track!

Higher quality Stanley knife is well worth getting. they store quite a few spare blades in the handle so you don't forget where your fresh blades are. They allow quick blade changing so you do, actually, change blades to keep them sharp and safe (blunt blades being unsafe). They let you retract the blade into the handle so you do, actually, retract the blade to keep it safe from accidentally waving your hand near where you last left the knife

Great stuff as ever Charlie, I always enjoy the "build" videos. The way you've installed the bridge has me wondering if it'll compress the polystyrene in time, as you've got the weight of the bridge and loco supported on a relatively small area. It may be worth considering a piece of ply at each end to take the weight?

Stone or brick? Well it's your layout, but if it was mine I'd go for consistancy... If previous retaining walls were stone then use stone and if they were brick then use brick for the new ones. Reason? Railway companies were consistant: they could vary from area to area but locally they tended to stick to a single building material which cut down costs.

SAFETY: Put a strip of self-adhesive foam rubber on the back of your steel straight-edge so it won't slip against your cutting surface and allow your blade to cut those "other things". Masking Tape on the back also works, albeit not as anti-slip, but ok if you want to easily remove it to read any scales engraved on the back of your ruler. You should also ALWAYS stand over the top of your work, to ensure you can get your bodyweight pressing that straight-edge very firmly pressed down. You really don't want to emulate me when I tried to cut my thumb off! 😳

Hi Charlie. I always watch your video when you upload it. You've got some great ideas, but I think you have made a very hard task for yourself cutting all that plastic! It is much easier to use foam core board and dispense with the cork! I have found cork is attacked by insects and copydex deteriorates over time! You can easily attach foam core board to polystyrene with a hot glue gun. Checkout my video for a demo of cutting foam core board. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1cjlScDxz_Y.htmlsi=SN0Y1miTC6sjO9XH Have fun!

Stone may be in order Charlie. I am asking myself when the incline would have been built many years before and what material would they have used? In short, it gives it all an air of age. Dirty the stone up and voila. But that is my thoughts.

@CAPNMAC82

Tools: The Stanley knife is ubiquitous and well-known. However, for bulk destruction of styrene sheet, the extendible "snap blade" cutters are hugely effective. Also: A box of Disposable gloves (laytex or non-laytex as allergies allow) is super handy for painting and gluing things and not needing to repeatedly wash up ones hand. Bridge: Look is smashing, a well-done job of it. Mind, bridges often want fiddling about with, and it's sore tempting to fit the wiring up with some sort of disconnect. Embankment: Variety is the spice of life. Railroads, like Rome, are seldom built in a day, so, it's very prototypical to see several sorts of "solutions" for things like embankments. So the small brick on card might be a good choice. As you note, it will want pilasters of some sort. Perhaps "hard" foam carves as heavy stone block pilasters might be a direction to take. Might be worth having a go at two "levels" of retaining walls on the embankment, too. Perhaps changing along the long, long curve of it, to help visually break the thing up. Dunno.

Great video, as usual Charlie. A little off topic: DCC sound would be really great if someone solved the "lack of bass problem." Not to denigrate your sweet model 25, but the sound is so tinny. And all the locos I've heard have the same problem. Of course there are big limitations on the size & shape of speakers we can use. It hardly seems worth the investment of adding sound. Oh bother!... as you Brits say.

Hi Charlie. Nice work on the incline and bridge. One thing puzzles me though: the mirror "trick" to keep the track straight is a good idea, but I wonder why you didn't use a straight Tracksetta template (assuming you have one as you obviously have a curved one).

Charlie, great stuff, any more praise and it might go to your head, so to counter the praise... hmm.. lose the Stanley knife, get yourself an Olfa (18mm L-1 Ratchet Lock Utility Knife ) and some spare blades, also, try cutting with light strokes, rather than one solid stroke, it has taken me years to realise that the light touch is safer and more accurate. other than that thanks for lightening my week, sad I have to wait 14 days for another 'Bishop' bolstering. regards.

Great stuff. Good to see it coming on. However… time to get your self some cut resistant gloves!Typically £8.00 or less from Amazon, it will be the best thing you buy all year. I tend to wear just one, on the hand that is holding whatever you are cutting, since the one holding the knife is unlikely to be damaged unless you are putting some serious effort into it when anything can happen😮 (plus, there’s always a second waiting for when you put one down and forget where). Absolutely essential for those of us ‘of a certain age’ who tend to be on Aspirin or extreme blood thinners.

Really enjoy watching your videos. Always something interesting to watch. As an alternative to those Tamiya weathering sets you can get eye shadow makeup sets with 20 natural (various light to dark shades of browns and rusts) for about £4.40. I have used them to weather model tank kits and diorama scenery and they work in exactly the same way as the Tamiya sets do. Also, that Hobbycraft paint is very good for base coating scenery, £1 seems a stupid price.

Charlie, why the mirror straight track? You said yourself it was a bit run down and limited to 20mph. Neglect would have left it to its own devices. And of course, I assume, it is freight only to a goods yard! The wonky track would affect the vehicles and add realism to the theory.

Thanks Charlie, its great to see you doing some good old basic construction with track laying. At the age of 57, I am new to this with a second-hand set of DC locos. I'm not really into modelling but love to tinker with what i find to create a layout, after all, its not a cheap hobby. Its great to see the issues you come across and dare i say, create and how you get round them. I've currently just made a raised section that then circles around my layout and comes back down into the inner loop. So seeing your getting on with yours gives food for thought. I would go for the brick effect to cover the walls, personal choice, but with such a large area, it would give it defecation. Not that the size of your layout needs more encouragement. All the best and keep up the good work. Hi to Mrs B, she must be very understanding. PS, i began to wonder if your good lady did exist, a bit like Arthur Dailey and 'her indoors', but watching one of your past clips, she was seen coming in and out quickly on a sped up seen when you was putting up some back scene.

Re the retaining walls. I would suggest use whatever the GWR would have used in the area you are roughly setting it in. Area is important to what would be used. No expert on the GWR but I would envisage the London area would be brick, Swindon through to Bristol Cotswold stone, onwards down into Devon some red sandstone and granite through Cornwall. I seem to recall you looking at walls in IIRC Taunton in an earlier episode that gives a prototype.

Hello Charlie.... Once again, you've delivered another fine video. Thankyou. I know it sounds like a bit of a cop out but I'd choose the kind of retaining wall facade that would best represent the kind of material and style that construction engineers of the day would've chosen once they knew the particulars of the job. One would suppose they'd take into consideration soil/earth conditions, the mass to be held in check by such a construction. If it's just a matter of aesthetics then I've seen enough of your work to know that you'll be ale to make either choice work. I was wondering though at what period in time if at all, would steel reinforced concrete have been considered for such an engineering task? I'm curious to see which way you move on this... Cheers!
