These are the hero cars of a generation. Hyper-hatches that deliver performance which supercars from just a decade ago might struggle to match. And we were hugely excited to see which was fastest.
We gathered the new BMW M2, the latest Mercedes A45 AMG (with 280kW), the Audi RS3 Quattro with active exhaust and the rather mental-looking Honda Civic Type-R for a proper head-to-dead track race.
This is internal combustion vs the clock, driver vs machine, and machine vs the conditions. It’s also a test of drivetrains: rear wheel drive vs front wheel drive vs all-wheel drive.

if you guys did a flying lap .. not one from a stand still it would be fair for the RWD and most of all the FWD .. because the type R is loosing a lot of time getting up to speed ... from a stand still the awd cars have a great advantage .. anyway it was really fun to watch ! thanks !

I agree. You can't get the best idea of handling unless you did the flying lap as the launch component is favoring the awd cars the most, followed by rwd, then fwd least.

They only started the timer when the car crossed the start line, not when the car sets off. This mitigates a lot of the AWD advantage. From an actual standing start, the AMG & Audi would be quicker.

Partly because of the launch. AWD has an advantage. Also if it was a tighter track, meaning one with more corners, the M2 would extend it's lead quite a bit. This track has ALOT of long straights.

+Fearzzy Launch means higher initial trap speeds, it goes into the first corner with an advantage, it is already ahead on speed terms when it crosses the start line.

Hasan Luqman Qazi it got 0,1 second on the M2 iirc, and it does get outaccelerated by the M2 after that so it won't really have an edge after the first corner unless you only get to hit 60mph...

Considering how close the Civic was to these others without launch control and FWD I would imagine the Civic would have been the quickest around the track with a rolling start.

bimosalexandres the best car actually in Thais category is Focus RS, is less quality han bmw o Audi, but is best race, circuit, tracción, is amazing , and the most important the sensations of road is incredible , it's a car like those of before that transmits and that makes you enjoy, do not take you alone like the amg or audi, but it requires you to know how to drive.

They're so close you might as well just buy your brand of choice. Love the sound of the RS3 though. 5 cylinder engines just have a uniqueness to their sound just like the Volvo motor in the previous ST had.

Honda decided to place all that power through the font wheels only.. It would be a different challenge yes.. But this is the conditions. RWD drive won at the end, so advantage discredited.

+Dean Poli rs3 is comfortably faster than a golr r around a track. yes ive seen the evo video,and yes its complete bs. in the real world it just doesn't happen that way. the golf r is great but its several steps down from a rs3 in terms of quality, sound, soul and pace. Cars are all about compromise and the rs3 is clearly designed to be a road car first and track car second, something that is a good idea since that is where it will spend 99.99% of its time.

Should they? These cars will spend most of their lives on the road. I'm not denying the RS3 rolls like a football and suffers terminal understeer....but I doubt most Audi buyers will care. They buy for the badge and the power, not the handling prowess. If you want perfectly balanced handling you don't even set foot in an Audi showroom..you go to BMW. It has always been that way and probably always will be.

Yea, the launch was shit... but if it came in last by 1 sec, tightening up that launch would have it in first place.... and also if 10-20 mph slower is only a second behind, wouldnt that make the other cars look foolish....? The video shows theyre all on par with each other, the civic having less hp, smallest engine and fwd but still something u wanna down talk....? dude said anything small from launch, weather or tires coulda changed the result.....

such a fun series of videos. me and my 7 year old son are having a blast watching. would be great to do the track battle over 3 laps and the drag races over 3 races with an average time as a final time. just my thoughts..... but my point of posting is to say how cool these videos are and the production quality is great. keep it up!!

Yes you can. It's the same time in the damp and without a rolling start, being RWD. The M2 would've been significantly faster under normal conditions.

So... The 0-100 in the Civic is 1.5 seconds slower than the other cars and the final lap time is only 2 seconds slower than the other cars. In the other hand this circuit is full throttle, no slow corners no direction changes... BMW M2 370bhp RWD 62.900€ (+extras) Mercedes Class A 45 AMG 4Matic 4WD 360bhp 57.550€ (+extras) Audi RS3 4WD 367bhp 59.800€ (+extras) Honda Civic Type R FWD 310bhp 37.500€ (full equipment) So, it is very easy to understand the difference of performance in a circuit like this. The real winner of this comparative is the Type R by far. Half price, same or better performance, 5 door with the best boot and full equipment. I think germans should be worried about this. In USA Honda/Toyota are crushing the market because their reliability, quality, performance, equipment and price. When europeans wake up Germany will pay dearly for his pricing policy.

you miss the whole Point: you won't buy a german car because of These Terms you have mentioned, but because you want to own one, regardless of their reliability or high costs..and compare a Toyota Honda plastic bomber with a Quality german brand car...it Begins with the Quality of the painting/Coating, over the massive doors which Closes with a chunk as well as the whole Feeling inside of the cabin...even the cameras, heated seats, Navigation Display are in another league...in japanese cars you cant see shit on navi Displays when the sun Shines directly on it, the seats take longer until they are heated and the camera Quality is low Definition...I know the difference, because I have owned japanese AND german cars...the next one will be a Mercedes again, because Nothing compares to it...the driving Feeling is unmatched...

Never heared of a system like that. There are systems that are 100% fwd, but when needed send power to the rear. The reason for this is because the most time of the year you don't need awd and only fwd saves fuel.

Pieter Vonk Noordegraaf If you look at the video, both cars were basically FWD at take-off. The rear wheels only spun with the movement of the car. If I had to guess I'd assume they're both FWD most of the time, which is the opposite of something like a GTR which is mainly RWD when it takes off.

when taking off, all of the weight gets to the back and giving the rear wheels more traction. this is why the rear wheels dont spin out, while the front wheels spin out because theres not enough weight on them. you can see in the video how the front of the merc and the audi get lifted upwards.

if it was flying lap type r will be faster trust me .but there are also many other things like the truck some cars perform better on some tracks but not so good on others . This track seems to me as it is very fast so the advantage goes to cars with higher horse power.

It shows on the lap times. 50 or 40 kw would give the honda a 1 or 1.05 second better time....in racing a second is like an eternity.

This is an interesting way to test lap times. Is there much of a difference in the running order when they do a hot lap at speed through the start line? The Honda was at least one second slower to 100 kph than the others, yet still made a nice showing. I would love to see (or simply hear) that type of lap time comparison as well.

Regardless of what's quickest I'd take the RS3, sounds the best, looks the best and I'd hazard a guess it'd be the nicest to live with on a daily basis. That said the standing start component to this test puts the two wheel drive cars at a disadvantage when compared to their "rolling" pace but whatever really. They've all got their good points and based on that I'd ultimately take the RS3

as a pure track car the rs3 is comprised, but as a road car it is by a wide margin the best overall package. the awd gives it huge traction in real world situations both off the line and low speed corners. It is the one to have as a daily driver thats for sure

Agree about the sound but of the two AWD cars the A45 outhandles the RS3 significantly and is more fun on road and track.

soundseeker63 its one second a lap.....thats 1.2%. Not exactly relevant unless your in a real race, in which case bringing your daily driving hatch is stupid. This whole thing about lap times is pointless for cars that in reality just dont spend that much time at the track

stinger15au Maybe not, but agile handling is something you can appreciate on the road even if you are not pushing it to its limits. My argument was not about the lap time, but the handling. A great engine does not a good car make if it handles like a barge.

Type r is the real winner in this comparison, wet conditions and stand still start, only 2secs behind the M2, that's a victory for Honda, in optimal conditions and a flying start the Type r would probably win, and yes, I am a fk2 owner, and NO, we don't know what Lean is when we're blasting through a corner ;)

both m2 and rs3 are slower than fk2 type-r on longer tracks in good conditions. ofcoursethe heavy understeery a45 as well. Im fk2 owner.

I wonder how the new Ford Focus RS would stack up. One thing that hasn't been mentioned--the A45's 4 cylinders will give you better gas mileage than the M2's straight 6 and Audi's 5-pot. I've owned the GLA 45 for 3 months (they don't sell the A45 stateside) and get at least 33 miles per gallon on a road trip.

Actually the Type R has the best chassis of all of them, also the balance is so great that makes it almost impossible to beat on a track. Type R really is the fastest, but i'd take the M2.. just so beautiful and I love M cars :D

Latvietis96 The Hockenheim lap is a joke, it really is. Look at some of the cars around it with similar times. If someone did a proper lap in the Type-R it'd be faster than the Megane RS clubsport and much faster than the GTI Clubsport. I mean, just look at this track comparison: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1hxNcvhvL5o.html I know the Type-R is only rated at 306bhp, but on the Dyno it puts down 300whp (328bhp). I've seen the stats that Fastest laps has for the Type-R and they're a joke as well. It's already been tested that the Type-R will do: 0-60 in 5.3 0-100 in 11.2 1/4 mile in 13.4 And 0-200kph in under 19 seconds.

Latvietis96 I really do think there is something to be said about the Type-R being 8 seconds faster at the Nurburgring than the M2. I think one of the main things that's keeping some of these people from getting proper lap times out of the Type-R is the fact that Honda foolishly decided to put Continental tires on it rather than the Cup 2 tires it's competitors are wearing. The M2 is a great car though. It's like an M4 for a fraction of the price. It's also priced very well against similar Sportscars. There are a lot of tuning options opening up for the Type-R as well. Hondata is claiming something like 400whp with an ECU reflash on pump gas for the K20C1. Honda also has the 10th Generation Type-R in the works and has already declared that it will be faster than the Current Type-R. It's going to get interesting in this segment for sure.

the testers do a follow up and discuss the performance and handling of each car. PS there seems a lot of Honda haters out there, the type r is a masterpiece when you compare what it achieves compared to the price of others.and it won't break down .

i like a45 but decided on a touch more comfort inch higher gla45 yellow night ...got the amg front diff lock put on as option for corners and it does that well

Good review, driver seems very good. Can you put cameras in the cockpit or on the car, hot laps are more fun to watch from inside the car. the only thing left now is a 4-way track battle which no one has done in production cars for a long time, I'm sure the extra cost of insurance will be paid for by views and subs.

Great video, really loved the use of slow motion... Seeing how the Honda went over the rumble strip compared to the BMW was amazing (way too much time off the ground for the Honda's tires) and to see the slow mo at the launch for each car reveals so much about the "AWD" systems used by MB and Audi. Definitely gives me a little pride for Subaru's proper AWD system compared to the FWD-AWD systems used by the cars in this comparison. Great work with this video, really fills that hole in my heart after seeing the demise of Best Motoring.
