Track Weathering, Static Grass, Dry Stone Walls & Cottages - Part 4 - Yorkshire Dales Model Railway

This week I made more progress on my new layout.
Firstly, I made a start on weathering the track. For this I used Geoscenics ‘track grime’, mixed with a little Tamiya flat black acrylic, applied with the airbrush. I gave the rails a clean after with a track rubber.
Geoscenics track grime:
www.geoscenics.co.uk/track-grime
Secondly, I added a walkway from the station to the signal box using coffee stirrers. I painted these using the Track Grime wash linked above.
Thirdly, I added more dry stone walls and put down a couple of layers of static grass. I used Woodland Scenics light green coarse turf to blend the walls into the scenery once the grass was down.
After that, I added Geoscenics coal the to the coal staithes. They sell coal in various grades, so I used different grades of coal in different staithes.
Geoscenics Coal:
www.geoscenics.co.uk/coal%20d...
Next, I started adding some details to the cottages and station platforms, including benches, signs, flowers, clutter etc. I also added a water crane.
I also added the first of many trees! Like on the main layout, I start with very large trees at the back then work around and in front of them.
As always, thanks for watching.

Note take, note take, note take. The backdrop scenery you painted just looks amazing a few simple strokes of the brush and bingo sprawling Yorkshire moors.

Many modelers fail to put their buildings "into" the scenery and leave unrealistic spaces, where it is apparent they are placed "on" the layout. You hide the bottom edges of your structures so we know they have a foundation. When your dribbled the white glue into your coal bunkers it seemed to bead up until you brushed it into the coal. If I may suggest, a drop of liquid dish detergent into the glue and water mix breaks the surface tension of the water so it flows smoothly. Project is coming along very nicely, wizard!

Thanks Steve, appreciate it! As you say, those little things make a big difference. They were dummy rubber coal loads that come with the kit to save you a bit of coal - I put the real stuff on top of that. But you’re spot on the wishing you liquid works wonders.

The station name is lovely sounds just right to me. I already posted one reply on Chas Tallis post who beat me to it. The other minor thing I noticed is the speed signs, these are painted yellow on the side facing the driver and black on the back. A few have commented on the tree height I planted a sycamore seed when we moved in here and now it towers above the garden higher than the house as you said people often do not model trees in full scale and I am sure it will look right when the rest are added. Really enjoyed seeing the update

Can't tell you how much I'm enjoying watching this coming together. Will there be some Swaledales and a farm dog? And some worn areas in the gate holes? There's always trampled grass and ruts where the sheep move through, a collapsing gate (sadly all being replaced with galvy ones now) with a rusty chain, but with a few polished links. And some collapsed sections of walls, even back then, they needed maintaining. I guess oo scale plovers are out of the question?

"Misselthwaite" sounds so profoundly "Yorkshirish" - even to me as a German ;-) Your layout comes along really nicely. Especially the weathering makes it look so realistic. The background merges nicely with the layout. If you permit me a tiny criticism: the tunnel disappearing underneath the railway line close to the signal box does not make sense to me. I wouldn't expect such a probably long tunnel built for a small country road. It would appear more plausible if the road would reappear just behind the station e.g. to allow access to a loading ramp.
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 3 года назад
Thanks Harald, it’s definitely very Yorkshiresque! That crossed my mind as well, but have a few of those sorts of long road tunnels here: commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Steventon,_road_tunnel_under_railway__-geograph.org.uk-__1162778.jpg There are a few just down the road from where I live. I imagine it coming out just the other side of the backscene, which saves me modelling it!

Somethingthwaite is very much west of the Pennines and north of Morecambe Bay - as in Satterthwaite, Seathwaite, Haverthwaite, Bassenthwaite, etc. I have to suppose the expanse of water called 'Misselthaite Lake' is behind the camera! Another great saga, Lewis. Keep the videos coming!

Misselthwaite Manor was the location Frances Hodgson Burnett's famous childrens book 'The Secret Garden' set on the Yorkshire Moors. I'm guessing that was Lewis's the inspiration for the name. A sequel written by another author, Susan Moody, is called 'Misselthwaite'.

This looks more and more amazing. Just need a few figures and vehicles and it's ready to tour in exhibitions. A small remark though : the end cardboard wall in the road tunnel mouth is a dead giveaway that it is not trough. I'd take a picture trougn a bridge somewhere in the local area and glue a print that had colors faded via a program like Gimp to give the illusion it goes trough... hope it's still possible, else you can try painting it black then cut the print using a bridge or tunnel face as a template before gluing the half-circle image into place.

A nice little layout and its great to see the transformation from bare modroc hills to nice green hills. May I ask 2 questions about the details? Looking at the Signalbox it would appear that there is no internal toilet, so where does our Signalman go for a pee and how does he keep the Signalbox warm during the cold days? I was a Signalman during the 1960’s on the old North Midland route. My Box was a Midland type Box were there was an outside toilet and a brick coal bunker. This bunker was kept topped up on a regular basis. An 08 with a 16T Mineral Wagon and a Brake Van would come along and the coal would be shovelled from the wagon into the bunker. This wee train would travel along the line stopping at every Box.

That’s a great point! I’ve left a space the other side of the signal box for a bunker etc, but didn’t think about a toilet! You’ll see one eventually, I can’t be having my signalman getting caught with his trousers down squatting in a bush as a train comes in...

@@MouldyRaspberry I have been beaten to it. I was also going to suggest you give the bobby some coal. As for a toilet we had a box with no running water or toilet Ironically it was right by the local water treatment works. It was only in the 80's they got a water supply and porterloo when health and safety regulations came in. I knew of 3 boxes like that, two had water brought by train from the next station in canisters so they had to make it last the day, the other the signalman had to walk to the local colliery to fill his water canisters.

I worked in a Box without running water, the lighting was by a paraffin lamp. Fresh water was brought in every other day along with the Special Notices. But it did have an outside toilet, also a detail I find missing on layouts with Signals is a Fog mans Hut and brazier.
@cedarcam
@cedarcam 3 года назад
@@Cuderth I never saw a box with paraffin lamps but was told about them. They still used the road works type lamps which had to be lit after dark for emergency use and the signalmen were very pleased to be issued with bardic lamps No more smelly lamps. That's a good point about the fog mans hut They were all over. I remember those in use and one with a lever to place the dets. Another place I went had a miniature bracket signal that worked. It had a attachment on the signal wire so repeated which arm was off showing the fogman which line to remove his dets from. I am not sure if it was preserved in the York rail museum

@@cedarcam As a box lad it was a duty I had to carry out every day, on the Afters Shift, check the paraffin and fill if required, check and trim the wicks if required. I got to be a dab hand at twisting the lamp to show different colours.

There's something very peaceful and calming about your videos that's wonderfully relaxing and leaves me with a sense of serenity. It's like a window into the very best bits of the age of steam. I always watch them whilst enjoying a nice mug of tea (Yorkshire of course) and a biscuit, or slice of home-made cake (carrot today). Bliss! P.S. Any particular reason why you've moved from scratch built kitty litter walls to shop bought? Speed and convenience, just a more generous budget available, or an aesthetic decision?
@MouldyRaspberry

That’s my favourite tea/cake combo - good choice! Nothing in particular, but as this layout is so much smaller I thought I’d try something different and I do like the look of them, especially close up. I’d never have used them on the other layout, it would have cost a fortune though!

Hello Lewis It is all starting to come together very nicely now. I am very impressed with the dry stone walling as it looks the dogs kahooners on my screen. Is it easy to mould to how you want it? Love the name of the station, very Yorkshire. Stay safe, keep sharing and model on. Regards Lee@NEAR

Thanks Lee. Its foam so super easy to paint and shape to the scenery. But pricey though, but okay for a smaller layout. Osbourne Models sell it in Devon. Glad you like the name 👍🏻

They always do at first, it’s only when you add the smaller ones in front and blend it all together it all comes proportional.

Another brilliant video mate. Love watching your work. I think it’s absolutely amazing!! Love seeing the progress of your new layout and how quickly it’s coming along. I’d love for my new layout to turn out as good as yours. I do have a question. Where do you get your large trees from? Do you make them yourself?
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 3 года назад
Thanks Jon, appreciate it. Yep I make them. I’ll try and include that in the next video, but I’m pretty sure there is a ‘how to’ already on the channel somewhere. It’s just twisted wire, covered in DAS modelling clay, then seafoam glued onto the branches. Then I spray them brown, spray the branches with hairspray and sprinkle the scatter on. I’ve got absolutely loads to make so I’ll be adding them for a while...

When I finally create a fixed railway I'll give you a call!! Don't worry, far too many 'family projects' before that's likely to happen!! That rolling hillside looked like Saddleworth the other year - apologies to anyone affected, just totally barren, prior to being totally transformed - as usual, fantastic job. Thanks for sharing! Was that 94xx a little unsteady initially or was it just me? Al.

Thanks Al. That’s a good point, it absolutely does! Ah well spotted, I noticed that when editing it - it’s a recording of a recording (from a previous video) so it messed up a bit I think.

Very, very impressive series of video's. The best and most informative I have seen so thank you. A couple of questions if I may? I noticed the baseboards are at floor level. Is this due to restricted height in the room or your choice? Also the line enters a tunnel at the far end but there is no access to the track as far as I can see. Where does the track go?
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry Год назад
Thanks Robert, appreciate it. Yes the layout is built in my loft which is coveted into an office, so it runs along one wall where the roof slopes down. The track goes round a corner and the storage yard runs along the adjacent wall behind my desk.
