Tractor Pull People are Smart - Smarter Every Day Behind the Scenes 

The fact that you, Destin, are able to be social with ANYONE, is a testament to your character. Anyone from Navy Seals, to Politicians, to Southern Tractor Sledders. Crazy....

I don't think I've ever heard more 'yes sir' out side of the military. These people are so dam polite and respectful it's amazing.

Destin is such a role model with his social skills!

Considering the confusion about diesels, maybe its time for Destin to visit with a diesel engine manufacturer? I suspect that there would be folks at Caterpillar here in Peoria who could take him on a tour of the engine test labs and out to the Proving Grounds to demonstrate how diesels work. Might be worth checking out what they are doing to prepare for the post-diesel world too.

I live 12.000 kms away from these folks in a 10 million people city, I speak another language, and somehow I feel them very close to me. They seem so honest and hardworking. Kudos for showing a side of the US we don't see much.

Friendly reminder to all who haven't been to a tractor pull, the "pits" where all the trucks and pulling tractors are parked waiting to pull is almost always open to spectators, free of charge or maybe a couple dollars extra. Don't be afraid to walk around, look and talk with the owners and drivers. Destin's interviews highlight this interaction but it really is open to all who attend

There's an entire socioeconomic culture built around guys building big tractors to pull a sled that uses physics to create a fair competition that will draw crowd. The money from the event is then used to help the local community. If that Community is successfully restored to a working state, they can pick up the track and move it to a new community that needs help and competitors will just drive to a different location for a few years to help that community. And then this tradition is passed down through generations. What a great place of the world to live in where a structure designed to help people who are struggling is actually fun and enjoyable. These are the people I want to meet in heaven.

The way you can walk up to strangers and ask about their equipment is life changing for me bud. I have terrible anxiety but this is my world, together this shows that my world is a lot more open and friendly to questions and strangers than I thought. I have no reason to think otherwise, but you have inspired me to be a lot more friendly. I really appreciate your channel bud

If you want to do a part 2 tractor pull video, find an antique/classic tractor pull. There are classes that limit speed to 2.5-3mph. the emphasis is much more on balance and less dependant on HP. Also you might be able to find a pull with a simple weight transfer sled. Drop pan sleds are boring, it's mostly a contest to see who can be going the fastest at the point cylinders or air bags at the back of the pan are triggered. Find a pull where the tractors can be put to work when they get home.

It was interesting to learn more about the sled. Never realized there were grousers on it. Or that the pan dropped in stages. Always thought it was just weight and speed of the box. Cool to learn about something I've watched for 40 years.

Destin, I never expected to see tractor pulling on your channel. Don't take that the wrong way though, just figured the sport doesn't have far reaching fingers. I am a competitor up in Ohio and if you ever want to get into the nuts and bolts of tractor pulling, shoot me a message. Be glad to help understand whatever I can. Along with a previous comment, we have multi gas turbine engine tractors and multi blown alcohol engines running in Modified classes that might just blow your mind on an engineering level.

I couldn't help it, I laughed a few times... My Grandpa, Lloyd Douglas, RIP Dallas City, Il.....Was a TRUE pioneer of the sport, he helped design and build the very first transfer sleds..With the Shaeffer and Luedke families.. one sled was The JUDGE, "Here comes da judge!!"He was also one of the first announcers, and probably had more time on a microphone than Howard Cossell... before that he made the very FIRST sled. He flattened out a big metal tank off an old oil truck, into the shape of a toboggan. Men would line both sides of the track, and jump on as it went by, holding on to each other tight I'm sure.. the farther down the track, more men, more weight, until they stopped the tractor, YEEHAA, I actually remember some like that!! He pulled the first gasoline burning, diesel tractor with 4 turbochargers, yep, 4, an old Cockshut Super 570 in the 5000 and 7000lb Super Stock Class. He was called.. "Super Cecil Diesel" and that tractor is still being drove in local parades by another relative. He pulled the ole Cockshut Super for 16 yrs, then became the lead announcer for The National Tractor Pullers Association and Agri-Shows, from Dairyland Grand Nationals to the Superdome, for another 11 years.. and also MANY Stock Car races and Air Shows (he was also a pilot). He was instrumental in promoting the first Truck Pulls, Organized the FIRST Farm Machinery Show in Kentucky and was involved in the build of the very first Bigfoot truck....and Clifford Smith's Monster 3-wheeler..... AND!!! I got to spend as much time on the road with him and Grandma as Mom would allow. The whole time I was growing up!!! I knew EVERY puller and EVERY tractor, and they ALL knew me, It really was like a traveling family reunion every summer... Imagine a 12000lb Super Modified Class tractor screaming past to the 300' mark, you would here something like.. He took it through the fence row folks!! Give im a big hand as he drives back by!! That ole boy shot down the track faster than a lightning powered Zizwheel!!! or quicker than a Reo Speedwagon!! . I miss those days and I really miss them both, but Lord thank you for blessing me with the time spent and memories I still cherish..... and all that was a small fraction of his accomplishments... MY GRANDPA, MY HERO. I know there are a lot of ANDs in here, but if I told more about the man, there would be hundreds more.... Like playing semi pro against The Harlem Globetrotters twice... and beating them twice.... Or being the Australian Wrestling Heavyweight Champion for four yrs. straight..... You mentioned us giving each other a hard time, I'll have to tell Jeff Dykes that he was edited out of the main video. Nolan Robinson is one of the most likable people you'll ever meet, I'm disappointed that he didn't want to be on camera. He recently won an event (he generally finishes midpack) and got a standing ovation from the pullers watching at the end of the track.

I hope you'll do an episode on drifting one day. It's sort of similar to tractor pulling in that there is a lot of physics going on that isn't readily apparent.

Eddie confirmed a theory that sprung to mind in your first video; That is, the faster you can get the sled moving at the start before most of that resistance and weight is introduced, the better you do. There was one standout run you shot and it was clearly a faster first half than any of the others. Eddie's strategy of more weight on the back offering more initial traction would allow you to really put those HP's into the mud to get that speed up. What a sport. Thanks for shooting this!

Lost a close family friend last year to COVID. Pete Porter would have been at this pull with his tractor if he were still here. He pulled for nearly 50 years around the Florence/Northern Alabama area. I'm sure all those guys knew Pete.

The amount of science that goes into these machines is impressive. Some of the smartest people I have met have been involved in tractor pulling and building pulling vehicles. The pits are a good sample of the type of people that are at these events, been going to pulls for years, most guys are willing to answer questions and show there pulling vehicles. Love how Destin adds just the right amount of "Good Ol' Boy" to his speech to fit in with these guys and get them to open up to him. As a westerner, this culture is completely foreign to me.

you really wanna have your mind blown, find out how much boost they are running in the engines. The craziest I have seen was at a show they had a 300lbs boosted engine and when you run it the supercharger would frost over due to the methanol. the forces these engines have to handle is crazy.

These guys and gals doing this, just like farmers are extraordinarily smart!!!

Thanks for doing this video, I can watch videos of the pulls anytime on RU-vid, but interviews with the pullers is a different story. We've lost a few over the years and it would be nice to see them again talking about something they were so passionate about.

Destin, if you liked the tractor pulls, you should check out a dirt Super Late Model race and look at one of those race cars up close. I think you would find the rear end suspension set up and geometry interesting. Thanks for another great video!

This is an absolutely fantastic video, Destin. Would love to see more content like this.

Destin, The sled does not put weight on the drawbar. The weight coming forward puts a downward vertical force on the ground which increases the horizontal sliding force which makes the sled harder to pull. Since the chain is at an angle, the tractor pulling forward induces a vertical force down on the wheels and the horizontal force to pull the sled. I think if you draw it out with all the horizontal and vertical forces you will figure it out. And then start moving the front tires off the ground and you can see that the drawbar gets lower which reduces pulling force. You can see how it works dynamically. You want the tractor to wheelie so ALL the tractor weight is on the back tires for traction. But a smaller wheelie is better to keep the drawbar height as high as possible.

Not sure if you got a diesel lesson in the other video, haven't watched yet. I'll explain some of the basics. Diesels operate off of compression and high pressure fuel injection. The compression ratio is usually 18:1 ish and squishes the air so fast that it gets hot enough to ignite the fuel which is injected directly into the cylinder at 1500-30,000psi in an atomized pattern. Theres different kinds of injectors but the basic ones operate off of the fuel pressure supplied by the injection pump to overcome the pintle and spring inside and inject the fuel. The injection pump is run off of the timing gears in the front of the engine and is timed to engine cam rotation. Those inline pumps have small pistons that are run off of a cam inside the pump and pressurize/pump the fuel to the injectors. Most diesels do not require a turbo but almost all modern diesels have one. This is used to force air into the cylinders at higher than atmospheric pressure to increase efficiency and power. The turbo has an exhaust turbine to drive the compressor, and a compressor turbine to pump the air. Water or methanol injection is used to further increase compression, cool the incoming air, and cool exhaust gas temperatures. There is also no throttle plate on a diesel, the intake is completely open to atmosphere/turbo pressure. The engine rpm is controlled by the amount and timing of fuel injected by the injection pump/injectors.

Water injection is a big part of the reason for all the thick soot. Old jet engines up into the 1960s also used water injection for a takeoff, and its why they seemed to have dirty exhaust.(They clean up after the takeoff phase.) This allows more thrust while keeping the peak temperatures below the turbine inlet limit, and possibly the compressor temperature limits if operated at higher than standard rpm. While the soot is increased by water injection the NOx emissions are greatly reduced. Soot only stays in the air for a short time and distance before settling out, NOx has a much longer half life and further reaching effects.

I think it is awesome first of all that you represent Alabama on here. There are not a ton of popular Alabama youtubers. Next I think it is awesome that I saw people I know personally like Mr. McDaniel from Florence. I know him and a lot of his family as well as my wife's family is kin to them. I live right outside of Florence. It has been a few years but I used to go to pulls in Lexington, Alabama. They still have one every year, usually in August. Some friends of mine had a super modified 4wd truck. I used to help them with their pulls and truck. It was awesome. I even drove the truck at a non points pull. Most people think that Southerners are backward and lazy. The South actually is the core for hospitality, good morals, strong work ethics, common sense, self reliance, family, patriotism and humbleness. We just use our knowledge and wisdom and don't really advertise it. As you learned or already know we don't take ourselves too seriously and we love to pick at people. If people don't cut up with us then they are too serious and could care less about that kind of attitude. We don't get offended when someone picks at us we love it but be prepared to get back twice what you give. That goes for cutting up and hospitality. Keep up the great content.

My goodness, you lived a sheltered life if you never experienced a truck/tractor pull in your whole like. Where y'all been? I grew up in rural Missouri in the 70s, and pulling was more a part of the culture than baseball, and we went to one at least a couple times a month. My favorite memory was a couple of pulls we attended in the indoor arena called the Checkerdome, home of the St. Louis Blues. Not only did you hear the roar of the engines, you absolutely felt the vibrations in every part of your body! And of course, Big Foot was the star attraction!

These are some of the most down to earth wholesome people I've seen in a competitive sport. Love it.

The thing about farmers is that they have a lot of space the kind of dumb stuff all of us can only dream of, and doing that teaches you a lot. I picked up woodworking by just building dumb stuff at my parents farm. As teens we built a improvised trebuchet from a bunch of old junk, only to have it exclusively lob fist sized metal balls about 200 feet straight upwards. Learned a lot about physics and fear that day. Never met city folk that had the opportunity to do that kind of stuff.

At 17:20 you learn why your car runs better when it's raining. 😄
