MOLD - yes, mold. Could this be the culprit? Aflatoxin is a common problem with grains that get stored. Pretty much all grain has mold but, of course, some batches have much more than others. That's why when people go on grain-free diets that their allergies get better. Even their cancers go away. Most of our dry foods have mold and all of us consume mold. And, it's yummy (think sourdough bread.) However, getting exposed to way too much of a bad batch of (pick your favorite...peanut butter, corn, chocolate, coffee, wheat,...etc...) can make you sick. Some of us more than others. Then, after that your body will not tolerate even small amounts of these mold toxins. Causes inflammation in your body. Well, it does the same to our animals more or less. Yes, weather is a factor. If stored grain (or chocolate, coffee) gets exposed to moisture at a certain temperature...boom...you have more toxic mold in the end product. Here's the theory here: weaponizing mold is a thing. In fact, it's been proven that Big Pharma produces some drugs that purposefully have synthetic mold. Anyway, look at the world through the lense of MOLD and everything starts to make sense. I've learned you can test if your grains have mold by using a black light. The mold glows. (Did you know that cancer glows too?) It'd be interesting to have everyone's feed get tested for mold.

I've had chickens most of my life. I'm 60. I have a good number of chickens and was getting 3-4 dozen eggs a day. Last fall, still warm and sunny here in south Texas my production suddenly went to zero. Talk light, talk variations in production, talk weather... I get it, been through many, many seasons and weather changes. I have 6 different breeds. Birds all all healthy, they are cared for daily. But no eggs. 2 days after switching feed, I have eggs. There was no weather change at that time, no light changes as I control it. ONLY change was feed. I don't wear a foil hat, I'm an old timer (by some definitions) but I know better. People can say oh, they slow down, oh quit spreading this and that. Well, take it for what it's worth to you but I know better. And I'm getting eggs again.

I have 30 total amerikaners and easter Eggers. Prior to switching to a feed brand of 16% in October I was getting 20 to 24 eggs after switching to the producers pride that is a Purina produced feed. It reduced almost immediately to 8 to 10 by dec 01st. As of jan 01st zero egg production including my 4 African geese stopped. On Jan 15th I switched to a local feed producer and my chickens are back up to 16 to 20 and 2 geese are laying. So take this info how you will

I had the same experience. Producers Pride ruined egg production. I switched to a locally-made feed of 19% protein, oyster shells, etc. After 7 days of this feed, my chickens began laying 18 eggs/day. It was not because of molting or lack of winter sun; this happened before that time.

Thanks for your video! We raise ducks in northern Ohio for eggs for home use and sale. Our production dropped around Christmas, and is almost back to normal, but I read that the reason for that drop (it happens twice yearly for ducks) is because of fewer hours of daylight (winter) and the molt/new feathers (summer). Our production hasn’t really differed from past years since we got ducks in 2014.

I'm almost 60 yrs old, I've been raising my own chickens since I was 20'ish. I believe that some of the feed is having problems with nutrition. This makes sense when you take a look at this summer and fall crop failure. Those crops make feed. Also there has been a lot of weather change (witch is normal climate cycles) Also how many of you allow your hens to forage. Then we get to winter hen drop off laying during the winter, there is age (at 4 yrs. my hens go to freezer camp) All of this is normal and folks need to understand this. If your hens have stopped laying altogether then you should increase their food by giving them more whole foods. By the way eggs are good for hens

Our easter eggers dropped off this winter, but the reds and barred rocks are still doing fine. We feed them black oil sunflower seeds over the winter for some extra fat vs a ton of commercial feed. Great video, I knew the real mastermind behind this egg issue this winter was BIG sun and his co-conspirer old man winter.

Your videos are very useful and informative. Thank you! I have seen many food companies reduce the contents, slightly different in size, without notifying anyone i.e. milk, cereals. Unless they are required, Im not suprised if they dont tell the consumer about it. This is why I think it is possible they reduced some ingredient. Unfortunately some chickens have been affected. I have Plymouths like you 😃 I have had a mild winter and have had opportunity to turn the soil over in my garden. The chickens follow along and get plenty of worm and grub protein. In return they eat the pesky grubs , my garden gets fertilized,.and I haven't seen any egg reduction since they started laying in november.😃

My chickens stopped laying, but my situation is likely not relevant to the supposed feed issue. I had a few sexlinks and a couple of leghorns. I've had the sexlinks for years and my son had given me his last two leghorns when he quit chickens. I've always fed the birds nothing but Dumar layer pellets (I last purchased better than six months ago) and usually let them free range. (I have two dogs that are trained to ignore the chickens. I even trained my sons pitbull to ignore them. She would let chickens jump on her back.) All of my chickens did stop laying, but I put it down mostly to age. The sexlinks finally passed one by one. Then the leghorns got a tick infection which I cleared up and they later passed as well. They were all six or seven years old. None ever started laying again. All I have left is a single game chicken that just showed up one day and joined the flock. This one comes and goes as it pleases and never stopped laying eggs, but it lays them who knows where. I'll just stumble upon an old nest of eggs under some shrubbery somewhere on the property now and then. Tiny eggs anyway. I don't really want them. So I don't blame the feed for no eggs. I blame the cold (West Texas) and age. I'm on my way shortly to pick up some new chicks at Tractor Supply. Today's the first day of Chick Days, but everyone and their brother is buying up chickens because of the cost of eggs so gotta get there right away. Little do people realize that raising chickens isn't free and does require some work on their part - especially the chicks. I wanted pullets, but they can't be found. A few years ago I could buy all I wanted for $10 each. Today they are $16 to $25 if you can find them and those that sell don't even bother to answer inquiries. I didn't want to raise chicks, but what are ya gonna do? I'll also be buying feed - Dumar pellets and starter. I have heard that the crumble mix has changed - at least in appearance, but I'm not concerned. It's possible Purina had a bad run, but in every factory? The only other possibility is a conspiracy involving Purina, Tractor Supply and egg producers in an attempt to force people to buy eggs from the store rather than producing their own, but I don't see what Purina or Tractor Supply would get out of it. Sexlinks supposedly don't give a rats ass what time of year it is or what the weather is like and mine have proven than. Again, mine just stopped laying because of age and the cold probably made it happen sooner. No worries here.

My birds are a little fussy. They just seem to only like feed from TSC. I typically buy in bulk and mix mini pellets and crumble with some back oil sunflower seeds. I do run automatic lighting for about 3 months. My brown Isa’s did slow down but the black sex links stop laying for about a month 6 weeks. But everything is back to normal now.

Corn, b.o.s.s., goat feed, and split peas will work, ..mbe some roaming round the yard too., (Any shorting on mass produced feed will be profit based usually). P.s., (they shut down 318 backyard egg producers last year)

My free range chickens have actually increased in egg production even though it's winter. Out of 19 chickens including two roosters, I'm getting 15 eggs per day from 17 hens. All I do is tweak their diet and continuously treat them for internal parasites by adding diatomaceous earth to their feed and apple cider vinegar to their water. I add homemade lard to their feed to help increase body fat so they can survive the cold without heaters or light. They also get salt and baking soda added to their feed. I also give them all of our table scraps.

I feed my chickens hog finisher from a local mill but haven't switched they have been eating this for years. I have been seeing stories about people switching to other feeds from tractor supply someone switched to goat feed and said their chickens started laying. Myself I dont give any laying pellets I haven't found a need for them I feed feed from a mill that mix all of their own feeds but my feed that the chickens get isn't chicken feed either I feed hog feed because I raise pasture pork when I feed the pigs the chickens eat with them I feed fermented hog finisher that is corn and soil ground up with added minerals they list all the minerals. I got 2 50 gallon barrels I ferment the feed in and it does a good job keeps all the animals happy and healthy along with the bugs forage and kitchen scraps.

There are a lot of new chicken owners due to the price of eggs and chicken in the store. Many of them haven't experienced the normal seasonal drop in production. A long time ago someone bought a flat of flowers and got the 25 free chicks the local farm store and told me "now I'm a farmer.'

Pardon the newbie question, we are getting ready to order 10 chicks. How do you know when a hen has stopped laying? I don't understand how you can gather say, 5 eggs and know which hens they came from. Thanks!
@CountryLivingExperience

It is breed dependent. I know mine lay between 260 to 280 eggs per year. They each lay about 5 eggs per week. Based on my number of hens I should be able to figure out an approximation and if one may not be laying.

You have experienced people out there though that dropped to zero eggs and who are well aware of the normal winter drop off. Changed feed as a test to see if it made a difference then instantly went back to getting their normal production. They were not saying it was necessarily deliberate of a conspiracy but said it was happening. Did supplier simply mess up for a batch run that affected many people? Who knows, but it has affect some people. Another I saw simply stopped giving them the chicken feed and gave them some goat feed for a while and the normal production came back. Etc. Most people have suggested making your own feed, if possible, to avoid in the future. It does seem to be true that some batch of some major supplier was off at some point and it affected a number of people.
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience Год назад
It could be just what you said...."Did supplier simply mess up for a batch run that affected many people?". Which is why we don't need to jump to conclusions, sit back and observe. I have heard from so many that have had zero drop off in egg production and they feed TSC feed to their chickens. One subscriber mentioned that mold in some old feed could be a factor. I want people to look at this holistically.

Myself and every farmer in East Tennessee I know that's been using pp and dumor have had 0 eggs. We only have big box stores out here. I used them for years and had no issues until around the end of July. I got maybe 3 eggs since then from my 2 year Olds who should be in their prime. I just switched feeds and will update this comment if something changes in the next week. It's too prominent of an issue to be winter drop off. I've never seen this before and my family has raised hens for about 40 years. I know another young girl who's a farmer and she was suspecting something in the Chem trails is causing it. My hens age free range and eat whatever they want.

I have been doing chickens for almost a year. Once they started laying they have only been slow a few times because of the weather here in Texas, I just happened to switch from TSC feed to Orscheln layer feed. All 5 hens lay everyday. IMHO I'm a horrible farmer. My chickens deserve better. I forget to lock them in at night and then they sometimes don't get let out until 9am or later. They have just reliably produced. Except for the 2 that decided they'd prefer to be dogfood.

Me and my dad were always searching for food for our chickens. In the fields but also on the beach: shells. We used to smash them to pieces and give them to our chickens. Good for strong eggs. And mostly the chickens were scouring our garden for something to eat like worms, insects, grass, seeds, other insects, some foodscraps from the kitchen which we threw out into the garden. Chickens know whats good for them right?

I have 7 hens, 2 Sapphire Gems, 2 Ida Browns, 2 Black Sex Links and 1 New Hampshire, her sister died soon after I got them last March. I've only used Producers Pride scratch grains and cracked corn. I used DuMor from then I first got them to this past fall. I switched feed because I found one with a better variety of grains for a similar price and a little higher protein. I gave my girls fresh stuff from the garden this past summer. But I learned last fall that it was OK to feed them kitchen scraps, just certain things they can't have. Their egg production ramped up considerably, from 1 or 2 a day, to 6 or 7, a day in September/November. But there were several factors involved. 1) they turned 5 months old in August, laying age. 2) I switched feed 3) Kitchen scraps. I learned about the fly Larvae. I found a mix with fly Larvae, meal worms and crickets. I learned that meat and especially pork fat is good for them, that some fruits is OK now and then. My hens like grapes and bananas, I give them tomatoes, and cabbage and Kale. For some reason my hens are not big fans of cracked corn, so I buy frozen corn for them. I had put corn on the cob in the freezer and it got to where it was too mushy for me, so I started thawing then out for the girls. Now that it's winter I have to buy the Kale, tomatoes and cabbage for them. I also supplement with black oil sunflower seeds. But my hens don't eat near as much commercial feed either even though it's available. So as far as the Producers Pride being intentionally doing something to the feed to keep small chicken keepers hens from laying, in my opinion that would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face. It may just be that they aren't putting the best grains in the feed. They use the best of the grains for human consumption then what's left goes into animal feed. Instead of starting this big conspiracy why not just switch feed? There are other brands, yeah may cost a few extra dollars a bag but it would be worth it. And maybe get a better quality feed overall. The least number of eggs I've gotten through all the weather is 3 a day, no light (chickens need a break, God made them that way) and I only heated the coop during the very coldest days during the Arctic Blast.

The low egg production is a problem nationwide, not just from Texas. Therefore, the Texas weather fluctuations have nothing to do with the problem. So are you saying there is no lack of eggs right now? So why have the prices tripled from what they were a few months ago?

I’ve got 40 plus years raising chickens. I’ve feed them everything you can think of and I’ve even not fed them. What influences egg production is stress, heat, cold and the biggest ones are age and light. All my hens are on artificial light. My egg production does not drop enough to even notice. Currently I am feeding tractor supply feed just because it was convenient. Again no drop in egg production. I think this whole thing stems from first time flock owners that are keeping their hens to long and don’t use artificial lights. My hens go to the stew pot or pig feed at the end of their second year. There are cows in India that produce milk and they are eating waste paper from the street. Chickens are the same way it doesn’t matter what they eat it won’t affect the laying.

I have heard from so many people but nobody has expressed a sterility problem. That is a difficult challenge. Most who say they switched from TSC to another feed saw egg production come back in a few days. Some chicken molts can last up to 16 weeks depending on breed.
