Shows the dickhead hadn't checked his mirrors from the time he dropped his load until he hit the overhead. Not easy to get up to highway speed in a truck with the PTO on (drives hyd. system to raise the tipper) as it interferes with the trans and restricts gear changing. He was doing a good speed at impact for the trailer to break free from the truck. A complete Dickhead. That trailer would have had a sway up and i reckon that if he hadn't hit the sign he would of rolled the whole shebang and maybe hurt/killed an innocent person.

His box couldn’t have been up going thru the scales. Would have hit the lights and signs. Having driven a frameless dump just like that one for 12 years. Can’t follow how that happens generally you can’t shift well when the PTO is engaged. Makes a heck of a racket when engaged at highway speeds. Always supposed to leave your switch in down position anyway. Truck doesn’t drive right with it up anyway.

I have been driving a truck since 1987. I drove tri axle dumps for a while in the eighties and you had to pull a lever hard to raise the bed. It would go down when you let go. @darrencatenacci2737
@darrencatenacci2737 8 дней назад
@@dirtydiesels3110 If he had auto trans you’d have to be stopped and put it in first gear then engage PTO to start your pump. Up and down is another switch or lever. The part I can’t figure out is how he could be driving and do any of this on and up at speed. I was always told if you ran that pump at speed you would wreck your transmission. I know from experience it makes a loud racket that you won’t miss. So I’m baffled at how it happens. Always leave your switch in the down position when not in use is how I was taught.

This is not the first time this accident happened on I-64. I was a Richmond Police Officer back in the 70's when I witnessed this freak accident. It was early in the morning and I had just left Mechanicsville Turnpike, heading west on I-64, when I came upon an accident that had just occurred. A semi-trailer dump truck, like the one in the picture, was heading east on I-64, when the PTO suddenly engaged the trailer, and it shot straight up, hitting the road sign, which at that time went across both the east and west bound lanes of I-64. There were two young guys in a Ford van that was west bound on I-64 when the sign came down across the front of their van, crushing them in their seats. They had just left MacDonald's and had two cups of coffee secured in the cup holders in their van that still had steam coming off them. I'll never forget noticing that and thinking how fragile life is and how suddenly we could lose it. The driver of the truck was grief stricken and inconsolable, even though it wasn't his fault. When you're going the speed limit on the interstate and the PTO engages, the trailer is going straight up in a hurry, He had no time to react. It just happened right before he got to that sign, and hit it, and down it came. I'm 74 now, and this caused me to relive that accident. At least no one was killed in this incident.
@SeanPat1001
@SeanPat1001 7 дней назад
That sounds terrible! Did anyone figure out what caused the PTO to engage suddenly all by itself?
@troyblackwell3995
@troyblackwell3995 7 дней назад
Not at that time. The State Police worked the accident and they towed both the trailer and tractor to have it forensically gone over. I had to go work the traffic jamb that was happening due to both lanes of I-64 being shut down. I talked to the Trooper working the accident and he said the driver was just driving the truck when the trailer suddenly popped up. The driver was sitting on the shoulder of the road crying. I served in the Marines in Viet Nam and it hit me hard because these were two young men on their way to work with no thought that their life was about to end. In my 74 years, I've seen many such accidents happen that have appeared to happen with no rhyme or reason. For instance, I had a close friend whose daughter and fiancé were riding on his motorcycle in the woods on a trail when a tree fell across the road and crushed them to death. Like those young men, had they been a couple of seconds later or earlier, they would have lived. Like I said, life is fragile and can be taken from us in a heartbeat.

One comment already addressed the use of mirrors, even in my POV I’m always paying attention to my surroundings by use of the mirrors. You can’t tell me that there is no difference in the “feel”of the ride when the bed is up like that. Wouldn’t it be catching more air which in turn would make the tow different? Can’t understand how the driver couldn’t notice..Hmmmmmmm
@peltiereric6497
@peltiereric6497 7 дней назад
Either the bed was raised when he went through the scales or the controls were activated after leaving the scales either accidentally or or because of a faulty switch but that doesn’t explain why he didn’t notice it being raised. Unfortunately this happens more often than you might think

He was at a weigh station for an inspection ,some idiot pulled the lever activating the hydraulic pump that raises the dump box i bet .how he didn't notice this i cannot guess as it would have been obvious from the way the truck moved down the highway or just by looking in his mirrors .driver error 101 always look left right / front back / up down . I was a trucker for 45+ years doing long haul .the worse truckers i ever saw were all local .

You know... a dump valve [returning hotline to sump] preventing control manifold from pressuring up could stop the ram from telescoping out if pump system accidentally is energized. This should include a flow alarm to prevent incidents during normal [non-transit] use where dump valve should never be open.

You should ALWAYS be checking your mirrors every 2 to 3 seconds. It's in the CDL license manual and test not to mention it's just instinct of truck driving. Yes, he should NEVER be allowed to drive a tractor trailer again!!!
@genewashington1502
@genewashington1502 8 дней назад
The truck manufacturer should have a safety alarm in the cab, alerting the driver that the body is raised. Or that company could install them themselves after market. Either way, the driver should have looked in his mirrors at some point and noticed that.

Them signs are not cheap, always pay attention, even if you got troubles you are dealing with, that are distracting you, cause now you got even bigger problems. I'm guessing that sign costs about 75k to replace, insurance will pay for it?
@jb6712
@jb6712 7 дней назад
Yes, THOSE signs are expensive. As for the useless "advice," why does a person who isn't at all involved with the incident feel the need to spout off junk nobody cares about, least of all the offending driver? Likely the trucking company's insurance carrier will shell out the bucks for the repairs, but it's also possible the company will sue the driver for said insurance, but I'm only guessing, not stating any actual facts I cannot verify.

Killing the engine could be dangerous. A better alternative would be to disable the PTO if the truck is in motion. That might be a little complicated because sometimes the driver will dump the load while moving the truck forward at a low speed in order to spread the load out. However, I think there could be a way to do it.

It's a miracle it didn't roll with only one axle on the ground and all that in the air. Mustsa been one of those retarded automatic transmission trucks pulling that very expensive Mac trailer; Theres no way you wouldn't know the PTO was engaged if it was a manual transmission, It's harder to shift when the PTO is engaged. Unless it was some clueless driver who doesn't have a feel for the equipment or stays on the phone with only 30% attention on the job at hand. This is an abomination!
