I remember watching a huge concert for Amnesty International. It was in Argentina and she was sharing the bill with Youssou n'dour, Peter Gabriel, Sting and Bruce Springsteen. They all had full bands and backup singers. Big production. She came out by herself with her acoustic. And the crowd LOVED her. She owned the stage.

Whenever I hear Tracy Chapman it makes me think of Joan Armatrading. If you haven't heard her you must. Her early stuff is so emotional and sweet. She utilizes the full range of her voice. On her album 'The Key' she has King Crimson members Adrian Belew and Tony Levin along with Jerry Marotta and Stewart Copeland as well as my favorite sax player ever Mel Collins.

Saw her at the world renown Carenegie Hall in NYC on November 30th 1988. Only 7 months after the release of her first album. That rarely happens for such a new artist, especially, modern musicians at that venue. She is unique. It was a great concert.

This lovely lady exploded onto the international stage back in - oh jeez I am getting old. This must have been my high-school years and I was busy listening to Prince and Pink Floyd and Surfer Rosa and Sonic Youth and REM and all that, I guess. Remember - I am Norwegian. And suddenly this voice arrived via radio and her album of a handful of quiet compositions to this boy who was full of energy - discovering this thing called "love" and "sex" (not necessarily simultaneously), skiing up and down mountains, climbing up and down mountains and generally being hyped with being a youth watching ALL the movies and listening to ALL the music with quite some excess in all directions. As an illustration of the power of music - this black girl from Ohio somehow got picked up in Norway during the late 80s and exploded. Including the hearth of this former teen who travelled Europe pre-destruction of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain. Her lyrics had nothing to do with my actual life - yet they hit so hard a couple of years before I myself went into doing my year of military training and we all got quite tense over here as the Soviet Union started shattering around us in all directions and nobody really knew if anyone had any control or what would happen next. I still put the CD on now and then. (We have a fun ad from MacDonalds running on TV here in Norway these days. A son is asking his dad what he should do for his girlfriend. The father said, "When I met your mother I burnt CDs for her all the time". The camera cuts to a scene with the son and his girlfriend sitting on a beach watching a bunch of CDs in flames - yeah I am getting old). Anyhow - the album still takes me back to that awesome teen year of being 17/18. It is a little weird since Sonic Youth or Prince or k.d. lang or those sounds feels more "like the times" (not perfectly sure about the years here - yeah I am old) - Tracey's album hits harder as a time-marker of "that period". Probably because it came when we boys were 17 and not stupid 16 years old. So we could also sit up drinking wine with the (much wiser girls) and talk about unfairness and global issues and "emotions" - since we had actually started to see shit. We were 17 and was levelling up on learning compassion and all that in addition to climbing up mountains or falling off waterfalls in kayaks as the monkeys we were. We were slowly thinking about what we should do with our lives when moving out. Music is weird and awesome. I still remember the feeling of playing "fast car" when I could borrow my dad's car when getting my licence at the time. That insane feeling of "near future" being "absolute chaotic freedom and potential". Thanks for the listen and flashbacks, my friend.

My favorite track of hers is "Crossroads". It has such a different sort of cadence in terms of the drum beat and simple instrumentation - and the lyrics are some of her absolute best. I'll queue that one up every so often whenever I'm really struggling with some of the things she sings about in that song and it never fails to help me replenish some much needed resolve.
