He might need a left hand style level line reel. A conventional has no worm gear and the line is balanced by the fisherman onto the spool. I think when he corrects the mount, the reel will feel good for him. He is a right hand spinning reel fisherman.

Awesome, thank you for the history lesson as well! I’ve heard the term ballast stone, but knew nothing related to it. How cool! Great trade by the way. Have a great weekend, sir!

The French arrived in Louisiana in the 1680’s so it could be older. Plus it’s probably not drying, the rock is a bit porous and absorbing the water. Plus the reel was set upside down

Waving hello from Missouri again!! 👋 Cool story on the stones!! Imho, it'd be a shame to break it open... Better to keep the mystery! 😽

Local university geology departments would likely provide more details if you are that curious.

I mount them backwards all the time. Go to put line on them and relize I should have had coffee or like you a tea. I use a paper towel roll on the end of a drill run in reverse to take line off of a reel fast. That model Penn reel might not have auto engage but older Penn reels are tough. The clicker on most Penn reels are loud. That is a great combo and I hope you hook into a monster!

That's a good deal, $60 for that rod and reel. I have a roughly matching setup, left to me, by a friend, about 20 years ago. The only difference is my rod is 8 ft without the belt attachment. It is rated 40 - 80 lb test, heavy action

Ballast stones from Chinese sailing ships have been found on the west coast, reportedly dating to precolonial times.

Cut it in half, be able to see what’s inside and it’d make a nice shelf piece.

Granite is formed when lava flows under the surface and cools slowly underground

It probably is a ballast stone, but I will say the Mississippi River does carry granite rocks that size and larger down the Mississippi and deposits them in layers, however they are usually a different color
