Trying cow stomach soup for the first time! I decided to have this traditional Colombian soup called mondongo (which is the Spanish word for tripe) at a popular local chain also called Mondongo. It’s a nice, casual local spot, and I figured that if they named the restaurant after the dish they much know what they’re doing.
I really enjoyed the mondongo and will definitely have it again before I leave. It reminded me of chicken soup, if you’re curious how it tastes. In addition to diced tripe (I believe beef is most typical), the soup also has vegetables like onions and carrots, but these can vary, and is served with sides like arepas, rice, avocado, and a banana. You’re meant to eat those sides with the soup. I know it sounds weird, but just go with it. It does actually work well together.
My friend was nice enough to join me as both a guide and an interpreter, LOL. She also gave some great tips about places to visit in Medellin and foods to eat.
When you’re in Medellin, be sure to try some mondongo!
