A couple of you asked for this so here it is...in this video I go through my set up and process for staining sheets of tattoo flash with coffee for an ages effect and give you a few tips.

Yeah exactly. Well I've had better luck with acrylics this week. I needed painting some sheets this weekend and tried to stain them following this tutorial. I think I over stained it it came out kinda dark and spotted but it's not too bad. Ill learn with practice. I think it's awesome though that you have these tutorials and actually take the time to help other artists with questions. Usually whenever I ask a artist I follow a question I don't get much of a response. So much appreciated man,

Well I would say it could either be the fact you're putting too much ink into the paper so maybe try going a bit lighter with the copics or it could be the coffee wash. If its hot coffee it will cause it to bleed and if you soak the paper it lets the ink run more. Maybe try it on a scrap bit of paper til you get it right so you dont go ruining other sheets. Hope that helps

Yeah definitely I think a portfolio of well organised flash sets is a great way to go, maybe supported by a book of sketches, pencil shaded and linework studies showing your design process and you're in business!

thank you for the sweet video. I had always thought the stain was added by hand in sections only to the empty areas of the paper (unless of course it aged naturally). Also thank you for the tip about adding the stain before hand because so far i've only used watercolors and pen n ink or micron pen in order to do the lines. You saved me a lot of time on trial and error and also a lot of frustration. I do want to look into the other mediums for the color flash paint pens but that's another day :)

Hi no problem at all! I have never used it but if it's 140lb it's standard weight (300 grams a square meter or GSM, thats what I use) and cold press will mean its got a good strong grain. One thing I will suggest is getting A4 instead of a standard watercolour size because if you ever want to put it in an A4 portfolio or flash displayer etc it won't fit otherwise!

You can't use standard cartridge paper for this really, it could work but you will get a lot more warping and you wont get the grainy texture. I would recommend buying some good quality water colour paper with a strong grain at least 300gsm

I would but I don't paint with watercolour as you can't stain it afterwards, but I will do one with black ink soon

hey man, quick question. I paint with watercolor and like you said you can't coffee stain after with watercolor because it will smear.(obviously) :p so I was wondering, do you think it would work to coffee stain the sheet before the painting? or would that cause the coffee to smear during the water color application? any insight would help before I try and potentially ruin and waste supplies!

I think it would be fine, never tried it but I work with a tattooist that does that and it looks fine. Only thing is you wont get the aged effect on the colour only on the paper so it wont look as authentic

with ph martins i think you would have to draw the outline with fine pen and then coffee stain, then afterward add your colors after it drys and you will get a nice effect.

Adam Lanza no i am telling the truth, but you have to use waterproof pens, like micron or fibercastell or indian ink, for the outline first. Then coffee stain, AND THEN add your color or else the color will bleed when you coffee stain it. No Problem.

Windsor makes paints? Lately I've been using some cheep acrylic paints they work ok but the texture is not as smooth as I hoped it would be. I wanted to try ph martins but I don't think that would be wise since water colors run when you stain the sheet. I herd good things about fw liquid acrylics but I tried their red and it was pretty darker color than I expected

How long after you finish the coloring do you stain it? I did my like work and black first and then I stained it but my black began to bleed. Not sure if I should let it sit for a day to let the black dry out better. Or what I should do?

Great stuff... just wondering.. do you not get any oil stains from using the coffee (considering there are oils in the coffee beans)? I say this coz i recently used some on a canvas.. and the whole back side ended up being an oily mess

Hello! I have a question , do you use just inks ? I was hoping to do this but wasn't sure if the water would ruin the watercolour already on the paper (I'm using Indian ink and dr ph martins water colors ) would it be best to stain after I do the outlines/shading ? Or would the colour dry permanent as well. I figured I'd ask instead of finding out the hard way. Thank you!

The Indian ink will be permanent, but dr p h martins watercolours aren't waterproof so I would say they would run. If you want to do flash on stained/colour washed sheets using your watercolour inks I'd say do the stain first. Alternatively acrylic inks are decent and they don't fade like the watercolour inks, which aren't lightfast either. :)

Great video. One problem I've had is with my watercolors running if I try to stain after painting. Is that a problem you've run into?

Me too!!! I just had the same problem if i stain after painting. I use tubes and pan watercolors and india Ink for the line work and shading..i notice that if you use liquid watercolor you can stain before or after and the color wount bleed at All!! I think if you paint first and stain at the end at longest you don't touch the color It will not bleed!!...

Love your videos but I'm struggling painting with black acrylic ink as its so permanent, please could you upload a video with black acrylic and coloured with watercolour? I heard this is how most tattooists work.. thanks!

I use special marker paper. Can i use this coffee method? I also use the Ciao Copic markers, hopefully the ink stays in place...

Is that instant coffee you are using? Or are you just mixing plain ground coffee beans with cold water in a cup? I'm not noticing any chunks of coffee sticking to your paper each time you lift the paper up off the coffee application. Maybe that's because its instant coffee you're using?

Yeah!! You said you uses Ink? What kind of inks?i use watercolors!! But i have To stain before painting!! I can stain after linework or shading and it wont bleed but if i stain after the color it will bleed alot specially the green!!..

Yeah man it's all about practice. Well 90% of tattooists I have spoken to are pretty much as far up their own ass as they can get...and I'm a fellow tattooer! So I can image your dilemma haha, but yeah no problem mate happy to help
