Traditional Longbow. I make an Ash Longbow. How to Make a Survival/Bushcraft Longbow from Ash.

I make a traditional-style longbow from an ash sapling. I enjoy a day of woodcraft and cut a young tree and form an English style longbow in the woods using hand tools. I make simple arrows, string the bow and shoot with my own longbow - simple archery at its best.

Theres something magical about harvesting your own wood, the smell and feel of it, also having a love for trees and respecting how important they are in nature.
@CircumcisionIsChildAbuse
@CircumcisionIsChildAbuse 2 года назад
If you've never smelled the fruity/sugary scent of douglas wood, you're missing out. If you've ever seen outdoorsman cutting wood or doing anything, one of the first things they sometimes do is smell it. Almost as if to make sure it smells proper XD like food almost. You test it with your sense of sight first, then touch, then smell. With how much modern life has such a hyper fixation on sight and sound, you lose those more primal senses of touch and smell. That's why there is an eastern philosophical saying, "touch grass" as a way to connect with your primal roots. Kind of like "stop to smell the roses"

I've just found a piece of briar... I've been out to work on a bow and it was too freezing cold to work. I had my hands in my pockets for half an hour and failed to bring the feeling back, but on the way, in a hedge, is a thick, straight dead briar stem just thick enough for a bow.... It was too cold to take my gloves off, though. One day soon, when it's warm enough, I'm going to cut it and have a good look at it and make a rose bow if I think it's worth a go... 'Strewth! It's colder now than in January while I was chasing starlings...

Mick you can tell a lot about a man by how his dog loves him, I am going to make one for my sons and grandsons umm, 6 and one for me! 7 haha, what is the best grain orientaion ? Thanks again friend, top notch !
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 7 лет назад
Ha! Very wise, you know dogs - and men. Ideally, grain should run straight along length of bow (so when viewed across the end, you can see the growth rings). Not always possible but that's the ideal. I believe that bows can be made from DIY store oak or ash boards and it is possible to have the grain turned 90 degrees - that is running from back to belly of the bow. But never tried it. Get some wood and have a go! All my videos aim to encourage beginners to have a try - what's the worse can happen - firewood? Good luck with all those bows! Mick

Great video . A "stomp vise " / step vise or hip vise made from rope - 2 branches and attached to a tree will hold a stave while a bowyer shaves and contours wood for the correct geometry . This is done while standing . No stooping down and the weight of the foot keeps the stave tightly clamped or the pushing of the hip sideways accomplishes the same thing . Works good in 2 feet of snow . My hyper opinionated ass strikes again . Best wishes and thanks for all of your videos Mick .

If you find a video on a stomp vise please let me know . Have never seen a video on a stomp / step vise . I used to have YT public videos and my videos are private these days . My Great Uncle / Apache "indian" and bowyer showed me those primitive vises over 50 years ago and I started teaching them to the military and later (circa 1976) to civilians - military SAR / search and rescue etc. Things are fine and getting ready for the hunting season . Will use a black powder rifle first season and a plains Indian bow when bow season arrives . Bow is hedge wood - sinew backed - approximately 75 pounds . Arrows are sumac or cedar with vulture fletching's - hand forged broad heads made from old wagon and buggy springs . Some points are flint - chalcedony or obsidian .... and Yes ... I have made more than a few bodkins . Unable to produce paragraphs . My "channel" is old and utilizes the old "module" system . Take care of yourself - Adios ... Left Cat / Patrick

Always a pleasure to watch your videos Mick. Beautifully filmed and great job on the long bow. Ash staves are lovely to work with. Did you test the draw weight of it? Looks powerful. My guess... 50 - 60lb Plus I heard a pheasant in the background. That's your arrow fletching sorted mate :) Cheers Mick atb Andy

+Clan Gunn Bushcraft Hi Andy, glad you liked it! Busy day - two cameras, one dog, one fire and make a bow - phew ;-) I haven't measured the draw but I think you are spot on with your estimate. Yes, I need a word with that pheasant about some feathers... Cheers Andy, always very pleased to hear from you. Mick

+Outside Edge Bushcraft Glad you enjoyed - fun video to make. As normal, the French would easily secure victory over me by offering a plate of mussels and chips!! Cheers again, Mick

Wonderful... I've made a few bows from ash. It's one of the few trees with lots of straight wood, especially where it's growing in thick clumps.... Where the woods have been cleared a few years ago is the place to look. When the light gets in, the seeds grow like wheat.... I used to tiller in a tree like that. Then I realised it's easier to hang the bow from the string, rather than balancing it on the belly... Pulling on the bow rather than the string. The end result is the same and i found it hard to balance the bow and pick up the tillering cord at the same time. The slightest weight on the cord would unbalance the thing, or a gentle breeze... I think there's a video on my channel, doing it my original way. It's easier to find a tree to hang the string on, too... In my video, that was the only tree in the garden I could balance that bow in...

Yes many people tiller like that. Never tried it yet but could be useful in the woods. Thank you. Mick
