This is why I feel arts like Taiji or Aikido, if practiced properly, are generally more suitable for self defense than combat sports are. Self defense isn't all about winning fights. It's about minimizing harm/danger (to oneself) while going about our lives. And that includes the practice of "don't turn this into an actual fight if you don't have to". People who keep saying "oh, this move wouldn't work in the ring/cage!" are missing the point.
That is why you must always have the eight trigrams in the hands and the five elements in the feet, especially when carving your initials in a møøse with the sharpened end of an interspace toothbrush.
So are all the Taiji and other internal martial artists that got destroyed by mma fighters (i.e. Xu Xiadong) doing something wrong? Just a bit curious as to what their issues are
