The old Russians call needlework "Needle painting". It is a type of the decorative art which uses gold thread to embroider. It was widespread in Ancient Russia, and was formed under the influence of Byzantium empire.

They mentioned an "ingot stitch" but I have no clue what that is. Does anyone know what kind of stitch it is?

Нет, золотое шитье использовали не только в иконах. В традиционном костюме олно использовалось очень широко.
