A whole Roasted OX. This is an absolutely stunning piece of film, that depicts the celebration of Queen Elizabeth's II, coronation in June of 1953.
In Ledbury, a small market town in Herefordshire, they celebrated in the grand old style by Roasting a whole OX in the centre of the town, the whole community came together to enjoy this momentous occasion, and luckily some one was there to film the whole thing.
From the laying of the first brick for the fireplace/ox spit, to the slicing of this noble beast, in front of a mammoth crowd, reported to have been in there thousands, A real life slice of history..Enjoy

Fantastic film. I was 6 at the time and these films bring back wonderful memories for me. Only a handful of people had a TV at that time and it was 11 years later when we got one. Despite that, lots of people with a TV opened their houses to those without and the great community spirit took over. When I look at things today, I despair and I blame it all on TV. Thank god they can't take away the memories.

Great film and amazing narration so many years after the event. The clothing worn by people in 1953 to do manual labor is unbelievable today.

God the world has changed! All men dressed smartly, gathered to celebrate together. This was few years after the second world war, I believe that most of people we see in the video have lost dear ones during the war. We have been living in peace for such a long time we can't even stand each other! I wish that events like this keep happening today and in the future.

I think you were saying we should be doing this today , not if. Correct? It would be Wonderful. Reminds me of what we called 'Block Parties", OR Pig roasts. All neighbors and friends getting together, having a fantastic time and great food with families and friends. No need to pay to get in. Everyone just bringing something to pitch in. Kids playing, nice music, a really wonderful time and something that made many happy memories. We NEED more of that! God Bless!

Charlie Blum Yeah, I was running to work when I wrote that comment and yes. I meant that this tradition should keep on. I lived in France before, in a city called Grenoble. In that city there is a small street called "rue Servan"; Every June, the neighbors chose a weekend night in which they gathered, shared food, and brought live musicians and performers with some activities for the children. Sometimes, local artists decorated the walls of the street with their art days prior to the event. Thanks for sharing your memories.

wow scott this is a treasure thanks ddue!!.... you know, I live in a neighborhood like that, you don't even have to lock ur door if you don't want and I live in Memphis, aka the number one city in the US for violent crime. it kinda stuck with me that they just left the tools and building material out in the street for a week and no one touched it... had that been in my town they would have stolen everything and caught the car on fire lol. but not so in the suburbs

Scott, it was great to watch this piece of historic film. The film may have been put away for many years but I remember this story being told in my childhood in Whitbourne (b1957). I can only assume someone from the village was a guest. However the word got around, it was obviously an event to remember (the coronation aside of course). I have attended a couple of ox roasts myself, the last was at Cannon Hill park in Birmingham on Guy Fawkes night, probably in the mid 60's. Somehow a barbecue is just is not the same.

Mr. Rea, I truly enjoy these videos that give a unique glimpse into the culture and social lifestyles of the past - watching this was a pleasant experience, in particular early on when the narrator mentioned the bbq pit being built without any worry of vandalism or theft. A pleasant, relaxed and friendly atmosphere with a large group of people all looking forward to the roast. Thank you for sharing, I'm glad the video survived all these years and I hope to see more butchery videos of the past here on your channel!
