Centuries old tradition of burning Mashals popularly known as ‘Zool’ is observed today with zeal and reverence in the historical shrine of Hazrat Zanu-din Wali (RA) here in Ashmuqam area of this south Kashmir. After the sunset, people in large numbers thronged the revered shrine on a hillock and paid obeisance there. Later they took out the Mashaal march.
According to the inhabitants, the festival dates back to nearly 2,000 years. The shrine of Zain-ud-din Wali (RA) is respected by all communities and they actively participate in Zool.
Locals said there is an interesting story behind the tradition of burning Mashals every year on this day. They said during the rule of Ashushah Badshah in Aishmuqam many centuries ago, a demon had terrified the villagers.
